Interpretation:
The polymerization processes which use water surrounding droplets of monomer should be mentioned.
Concept introduction:
Polymerization is the process or reaction in which small monomer units reacts with each other to form a large molecular unit, which is known as a polymer.
Answer to Problem 8.1Q
Suspension polymerization & emulsion polymerization process use water surrounding droplets of monomer.
Explanation of Solution
Polymerization is the process or reaction in which small monomer units reacts with each other to form a large molecular unit, which is known as a polymer.
For an example:
There are 4 major types of polymerization techniques as,
- Bulk polymerization
- Solution polymerization
- Suspension polymerization
- Emulsion polymerization
Suspension polymerization is a radical polymerization process. The reactant mixture is a heterogeneous mixture. So, a
Emulsion polymerization is also a free radical polymerization process. In this polymerization technique, monomers are polymerized in an aqueous surfactant solution.
During both suspension & emulsion polymerizations a liquid phase is used. To avoid using solvents, these 2 polymerization techniques use water to surround the tiny droplets of monomers.
Because of the use of this water phase, excellent heat conduction occurs throughout the reaction medium. Because of that, a good temperature control can be obtained. And also it fastens the polymerization rate.
