Chapter 27, Problem 1RQ

Which type of ice maker has a continuous harvest cycle?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

The type of ice maker that has a continuous harvest cycle.

Explanation of Solution

Flake ice is generally made in a vertical cylinder and is placed inside the evaporator. It is a thin piece of ice and can be seen in restaurants.

It is formed by maintaining a water level inside the cylinder. An auger is rotated at constant rate inside the cylinder. The machine that makes this type of ice has a constant harvest cycle. This cycle is maintained as long as the auger and compressor are operating.

The auger is rotated by means of a motor which has a suitable gear arrangement. This motor may be kept on the top or at the bottom of the rotating auger.

The auger is placed in a vertical position and has a shaft seal. If the motor is on top of auger, the shaft seal prevents gear oil from draining into the ice. If the gearbox is placed at the bottom of auger, the shaft seal prevents the water from entering into the gearbox.

Feed hopper Feed hopper Plastic pellets Mold cavity Mold Nozzle Spreader Heating chamber Ram Hydraulic pressure Turning screw Barrel Heaters Shaping die Molten plastic Extrudate Select one or more: a. The process can only work with thermoplastics and not with thermosets due to the thermal processing requirements Tubing and pipes Sheet and film Structural parts b. The feedstock has to be molten or liquid monomer, the temperature of which will constantly be held above the melting temperature c. This process is best suited for the large volume production of tubes, bars and beams due to the nature of the extrusion process d. To release the part, the process typically involves the mould sections opening and the ejector pins pushing the object out of the mould De. The mould cavity region is usually temperature controlled so that at the point of injection it is heated and then gradually cooled down until…
