Many small businesses have to squeeze down costs any way they can just to survive. One way many businesses do this is by hiring workers as independent contractors rather than as regular employees. Unlike rules for regular employees, a business does not have to pay social security (FICA) taxes and unemployment insurance payments for independent contractors. Similarly, it does not have to withhold federal, state, or local income taxes or the employee’s share of FICA taxes. The IRS has a 20-factor test determining whether a worker should be considered an employee or a contractor, but many businesses ignore those rules or interpret them loosely in their favor. When workers are treated as independent contractors, they do not get a W-2 form at tax time (they geta 1099 instead), they do not have any income taxes withheld, and they find themselves subject to self-employment taxes, by which they bear the brunt of both the employees and the employer’s share of FICA taxes.

Craig Brokaw, newly appointed controller of STL, is considering ways to reduce his company’s expenditures on annual pension costs. One way to do this is to switch STL’s pension fund assets from First Security to NET Life. STL is a very well-respected computer manufacturer that recently has experienced a sharp decline in its financial performance for the first time in its 25-year history. Despite financial problems, STL still is committed to providing its employees with good pension and postretirement health benefits.
Under its present plan with First Security, STL is obligated to pay $43 million to meet the expected value of future pension benefits that are payable to employees as an annuity upon their retirement from the company. On the other hand, NET Life requires STL to pay only $35 million for identical future pension benefits. First Security is one of the oldest and most reputable insurance companies in North America. NET Life has a much weaker reputation in the insurance…
Jumping with joy, you were the first one which Jackie shared her good news. She was just promoted as the Production Supervisor in her company. You then tell her that she is now subject to Fringe Benefit Tax. She just shrugs off the idea given the level of ecstasy she is feeling.
Is it right that she needs not to worry on her exposure on said tax?
No, as it might be an additional withholding on her compensation benefits.
Yes, as she deserves to celebrate for the meantime.
Yes, as the economic taxpayer of said tax is the employer.
No, as she will be paying higher tax rates on benefits covered by said tax.

- Anita Brown is the manager of a wholesale food company. Her compensation, in part, is incentive-based. In other words, the higher the company income, the higher her incentive compensation. Each year, in an effort to influence her bonus, Anita makes several recommendations, concerning adjusting entries, to the company controller. One of her favorites is to ask the controller to reduce the estimate of doubtful accounts.1. How does lowering the estimate of doubtful accounts affect the income statement and balance sheet?2. Is there an ethical consideration in this case? If so, what is it?3. Should Anita be permitted to weigh in on adjusting entries under these circumstances? Why or why not?arrow_forwardRecently, the owner of a Trader Joe's franchise decided to change how she compensated her top manager. Last year, she paid him a fixed salary of $65,000, and her store made $120,000 in profits (not counting payment to her top manager). She suspected the store could do much better and feared the fixed salary was causing her top manager to shirk on the job. Therefore, this year she decided to offer him a fixed salary of $30,000 plus 15 percent of the store's profits. Since the change, the store is performing much better, and she forecasts profits this year to be $280,000 (again, not counting the payment to her top manager). Assuming the change in compensation is the reason for the increased profits, and that the forecast is accurate, (a) Which compensation method (the old one or the new one) will the manager prefer? Please explain why. (b) Which compensation method (the old one or the new one) would the owner of the franchise prefer? Please explain why. The firm is about to hire a new CEO and is discussing the compensation package that will be offered. A salary of $350,000 has already been settled, but the board is uncertain how to structure the bonus. The proposal that has gained the most support is to pay a bonus based on some percentage of operating income. Some of the board members believe that the bonus should be based on absorption costing operating income while others think that variable costing operating income should be used. Which option do you support? State clearly why this option is best.arrow_forward

Last year, the manager received a fixed salary of GHC50,000 and KFC made GHC110,000 in profits (excluding the manager’s compensation). Therefore, this year she decided to offer him a fixed salary of $40,000 plus 5 percent of the store’s profit. Since the change, the store is performing much better, and she forecasts profits this year to be $300,000 (again, excluding the manager’s compensation). These jobs are permanently gone, and many displaced workers have difficulty finding a similar job. The jobs they can find in a few months tend to offer much lower wages than their old job. Consider the following two proposals to provide unemployment insurance for such workers. Explain your arguments for or against each policy. a) Workers displaced from industries identified as impacted by foreign trade receive extended unemployment benefits. They will receive unemployment benefits for an extra 26 weeks beyond the normal 26 weeks eligibility. b) These workers receive unemployment benefits up to 26 weeks. In addition, if they accept a job at a lower pay than their old job, they are guaranteed 50% of the difference in earnings as a wage supplement for two years. (The government pays the supplement to the worker.)arrow_forward
