Reaction of alcohols with carboxylic acids in presence of an acid as a catalyst results in the formation of an ester.
Reaction of alcohols with carboxylic acids in presence of an acid is a condensation reaction. A molecule of water is also formed in this reaction.
Esters are also formed by the reaction of alcohols with either acyl chlorides or acid anhydrides.
