They also need to tell others if they are in pain and how they are feeling, and to put their anxieties at ease. It is important in my role that I communicate constantly with my client to understand how she is feeling daily and to let her other carers know her needs and if her needs change at any time. I also need to ask questions and share information with them. 2.2 Communication affects the work setting in many ways, between the client, carers and medical professionals. This may be done in person, body language, telephone calls, text …show more content…
When speaking to my client I always have a positive body language always making sure I listen and take time to smile and make my client feel relaxed and at ease and able to trust me, and that I will deal will their needs in the best way for them. 3.6 When responding to an individual’s needs, I would take a moment to make sure I have understood what is required of me and then take the relevant action, always communicating back to my client so that she is aware of how I am dealing with her request. 3. Be able to overcome barriers to communication 4.7 People from different backgrounds may use communication methods in different ways, for example people from different religious beliefs may find some gestures different so you should always make sure you are not doing something that may offend them, and you may also have a language barrier here. Also you may have someone who is deaf or hard of hearing they communicate in different ways, by sign language or pictures to help you understand their needs. 4.8 Barriers to effective communication, different nationalities, religions, cultures and beliefs. Also different age groups, Disability, learning difficulties or memory loss. The different reason people communicate is to show pain, anger, joy, love etc. It is important for people communicate so their views, wishes and information gets across. The communication could be formal or informal. Documentation and record keeping is important in the social care sector as this information may be used for legal reasons. All communications is confidential and are on a “need to know” basis. Communication between colleagues and other healthcare professionals is essential, as it ensures continuity of care. It also shows staff are aware of the current needs of the client.
To communicate effectivley all of this must be taken into account. If communication needs are not taken into account, problems will begin to arise such as distress to the client, anger/frustrating leading to possible violence and the client not recieving adequate care.
Excellent communication in a social care setting enables a resident to trust staff. This is achieved by being empathetic and understanding towards what they are telling you. Fulfilling their request wherever
Different social, professional and cultural contexts may affect relationships and the way people communicate due to of a lack of understanding or knowledge of one another’s background and culture. This could be through their race, religion, ethnicity or where they come from. Each one of these can have similar or very different ways to communicate. For example
Everyone needs educating and supporting including myself when looking at the individuals preferred method of communication, and everyone in the above list can give valid input in assessing for example swallowing by the speech therapists. This can include communication with the RN, GP for referral, to speaking with the catering chef and carers. By doing this with effective communication and documenting accurately we can ensure that everyone’s input is maximized and as well as being written and passed on verbally it is put into practice. This results in the clients personalized care needs being met
2.3 You can show how and when to seek advice about communication if you feel unsure about something, maybe a physical incident may have taken place which worried you, maybe something was thrown at you. Sometimes complex cases need extra assistance and help can be sought by talking to your peers, line managers, the individuals carer. A line manager or supervisor can help advise on specialist organisations who offer expert advice and services, as it is best not to think or second guess that you can manage the situation by yourself especially if you do not have the necessary skill set to deal with certain communication problems. Professional duty to ensure individuals receive the very best care and support is essential to provide the best service you can for them.
Let Client know what is happening, at all times, the client should know what is going to happen, to help them understand and reduce their anxiety, and maintain their dignity.
In any organization effective communication forms an essential part of the organization’s growth and progress. However, it has been seen that this is not always the case. This istrue in today’s globalized world when one has employees coming from different ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds working together. If the reasons for communication failure are examined it has been found that they fall in four distinct categories. These are:
Communication is so important in a healthcare and social care setting for a number of reasons. The patient and the healthcare professional need to understand each other clearly in order for the patient to receive the best possible
Communication is any form of expressing and receiving of messages between individuals. The importance of Communication in the nursing profession is to maintain high quality care for the patient but also maintain effective collaboration between professionals. Boykins, D (2014) states that the “registered nurse is expected to communicate in various formats and in all areas of practice”. Various formats include speaking to patients and coworkers as well as utilizing appropriate protocols and systems to effectively communicate regards to patient’s status.
Working as a healthcare professional is very challenging as we have to give care to ill people who often are scared, frail and they have to trust in a difficult time of their life in someone that they don’t know. Even more challenging is when we as nurses have to look after dying patients. That’s why a very important skill for a healthcare professional is the “communication”.
3. Language: even people speaking the same language can have difficulty understanding each other if they are from different generations or from different regions of the same country. Slang, professional jargon and regional colloquialisms can even hurt communicators.
Understanding different cultures is not the only important aspect of cross-cultural communication. One needs to be able to have an understanding of basic communication techniques. There are two main aspects of communication, comprising of verbal and nonverbal interactions (Chiesa, Scott and Hinton, 2012). Nonverbal communication encompasses co-speech hand gestures, facial expressions and general body language. According to Chiesa, Scott and
Everyone has experienced, at one time or another the frustration of feeling misunderstood and being unable to make ourselves understood by another person. Anything which, blocks the meaning of a communication, is a barrier to communication. Effective communication is like a house built one block at a time. First to build a house trust must be built; trust is not a group process it is created in one to one connections with each individual. Second, be bold and open, better communications are clear, direct, respect, reflective and frequent. And finally, strive to continually overcome the barriers to effective communication, challenge others to grow and educate your self. There are many barriers to
Cultural differences could be a problem, because different people have different beliefs, Traditions etc. they differ between countries, in religious societies, and people. For example, in Asia, they believe that giving eye contact to the elders is rude, they see it as a sign of disrespect. Therefore the traditions in Asia is, when the elders are speaking to the younger people, they must lower their gaze. Although it’s a tradition, people from other countries have to respect it. A lot of people, in the modern world, criticise these traditions. Another barrier, that occurs under cultural differences is that, maybe the person you are talking to does not speak English, or maybe they are confused and lost in translation, whilst you are talking, this can be a very serious situation, for example, if you have to tell somebody who does not understand your language, you may email them, and due to language differences they may read words like "thanks" as an offensive word in their native tongue, in order to overcome this problem it is advisable that you use a professional translator, such as google translate or through an online website, this is if it is working on a computer, and if its face to face method, then you can find someone who can speak multiple languages to come with you whilst you’re telling the person that doesn't speak English what to do.
