How does one become a hero? Does one need to save the world to be one or fight villains to be considered as one? When people hear the word hero, they would immediately think of superheroes, such as Superman or anyone who fights crime. However a hero is one who caused an impact not only based on fighting, but they are known for their achievements and accomplishments in assisting others who were in need. Owning to the fact that the smallest things heroes do count, even if it's not saving the town from a villain. Based on the definition, someone who is a perfect example is Malala. She exhibits the greatest amount of heroism in comparison to Beowulf and Roberto Clemente. To get a better understanding looking back at Malala she exemplifies what …show more content…
Therefore, Beowulf endangered the lives of all in the kingdom and giving Grendel the high chance of success. It was heroic of Beowulf to fight Grendel but the overall reason as to why he wanted to fight, was to prove his own physical strength rather than being honorable. Which, according to the definition is necessary to be considered a hero. Therefore, it is clear that Beowulf is not considered the most heroic based on the actions he committed. Additionally, Roberto Clemente is another perfect example towards Malala. Roberto Clemente is a Puerto Rican Baseball; he was known for his kindness and helping out those who were in need. According to the text, it states, ¨Clemente decided to accompany the relief himself, hoping that his presence would lead to food and medicine reaching its intended recipients.” Clemente shows true pride in helping others in Panama, that's why in this scene he had his thoughts hoping that his plan would go well with his presence. Although both Malala and Clemente committed to the same actions, Malala still continued her journey making changes for any girl in the world. It was heroic of Clemente on helping those in need rather than thinking for himself, but not much detail was pointed out in the text. It was easy for Clemente to help other because he had it all. While Malala didn't have it all, she slowly builds up seeking help as a 16-year-old. Therefore, it is clear that Clemente is not considered the most heroic because
Although cultural heroes ultimately serve the purpose of solidifying the values of a particular culture , the ever-changing, dynamic nature of heroism identifies itself as religious or a natural trait. Heroism is considered putting yourself at risk when in danger, helping those in need, and being the first one to step up and help, In the read Beowulf, he does just that. “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles” This quote is perfect in relation to Beowulf and the Anglo-Saxon beliefs. Heroism is displayed in many ways, It is showed all throughout the articles as well. Beowulf displays and greatly achieves one of the Anglo-Saxon values heroism through strength and greatness. As the story continues he resembles the traits of a protagonist more and more, for example, they place their careers in a high positions as if they are more important than their lives. Beowulf is seen in my eyes as almost fearless, how he goes about his quest and actions, slays Grendel and Grendel 's mother. Beowulf seems to put his life of adventure and intensity in front of his personal life. He focuses more on the Military part then he does his family or close friends. For him to put that in front of his morals and beliefs makes him an even greater hero.
A hero is defined as a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. As a child, Malala was raised in Pakistan by an advocate of education: her father. He ran a school that she attended throughout her childhood. But when Malala was only eleven, many Pakistani schools were being targeted by an extremist group called the Taliban. Due to these attacks, only 44% of Pakistan’s population are literate. Malala refused to stay silent about the injustices that were being inflicted upon her Pakistani brothers and sisters. Instead,
Taylor DavisKathleen Orfanedes8 Feb. 2018Is Beowulf a Hero? I would consider a hero as someone who being very brave, loyal, one who never gives up, and one who protects or saves others. I believe Beowulf has all of these traits. Beowulf is a hero because he fought off a lot of people for a town of people he did not even know and had never even met. He even came across the seas for them. He is very loyal because he was willing to risk his life for Hrothgar’s people day in and day out. Due to Beowulf’s loyalty, super strength and bravery to come fight off people, many people would say he was a hero. Beowulf is loyal because he did not even hesitate to go fight a huge monster that nobody thought he had a chance against. He went across the sea to a new country and knew nobody there and went to go save all of their lives just
Beowulf is a hero because of his actions in the novel. Heroic traits includes determination, physical strength, courage, loyalty, and leadership, which Beowulf demonstrated throughout the story. A quote from Beowulf shows an example of his determination, “…Fought with fate against him, with glory/ Denied him. He knew it, but he raised his sword/ And struck at the dragon’s scaly hide,” (Beowulf-Translator). Beowulf realized that there was a chance he would not win the battle, however his determination did not stop him from trying. Another quote from Beowulf shows his courage, “Alone shall fight for me, struggle for life/ Against the monster,” (Beowulf- Translator). Beowulf fought against Grendel without any weapons, just his
Beowulf was a hero not only because of his physical strength, but also for his concern for other people. “The hero must move beyond human limits in order to have the capacity to combat the monstrous forces that threaten the social order;” (Sharma 264) Beowulf has been deemed by most to have superhuman strength, but his superhuman strength alone does not make Beowulf any more a hero than Grendel’s strength makes him a hero. Beowulf rises above the limits of a regular human being
The debate over whether or not Beowulf is a hero can be taken many ways. My thoughts are that Beowulf is a true hero. Beowulf always shows characteristics of being a hero, he is seen as a leader to his people and never backs down from a challenge or the opportunity to further his legacy. Beowulf was always revered as a great warrior and ruler to his people. He would travel great distances to help other people and to fight off legendary beasts like Grendel, also Beowulf would travel to unknown landsand to the deepest depths of the ocean to battle great beasts that wreaked havoc to villages and kingdoms throughout the known world at that time.Beowulf displayed a great show of bravery and loyalty to protect people when
Beowulf, is an epic poem with no known author. It was first told in a Pagan society through oral tradition in the middle ages, and as times changed, the poem was altered by the community’s views and beliefs. When Christianity began to spread in Daneland, ideas of morality, good and evil, Heaven and Hell were added to the plot. This blend of Christianity with a folk story that praises loyalty, faith, honesty, and courage in the face of extreme danger and even death stuck with the poem. To this day, Beowulf presents a model of the human being who is willing to die to deliver others from terrifying evil forces, and is a true example of a hero throughout time.
Another reason Grendel is more heroic than Beowulf is because he killed more people than him. That’s heroic because those people he killed could’ve tried to kill him. As a result, Grendel was being brave and that’s a common trait that most heroes have. Therefore, Grendel is more heroic. In conclusion, Grendel could’ve got slaughtered while he was trying to kill people, but he killed them anyway because he’s fearless.
The heroism of Beowulf’s actions are more or less clearly stated in the epic. Though Beowulf’s deeds push far and beyond what we may comprehend, they are quite a feat. Beowulf has an ambition
In his time Beowulf was a hero to the people of his own land as well as Herot. He was a man full of courage and honor. Without questioning it it he jumped at the chance to help out Hrothgar and Herot by slaying grendel. While doing this he remained honorable by repaying the debut of his father to Hrothgar. Beowulf was courageous because he went ot fight Grendel with out a sword. The fact that Beowulf decides to fight with out hius sword proves that he is strong brave and full of courage. In his time Beowulf was a hero, he stood up for the good of the people. He did however repay his father’s debuts to King Hrothgar of Herot, at the same time. Beowulf is still considered a hero in the minds of the people. Yes he was slightly obligated to help the people, but when he first left for Herot on his ship, no one forced him to. Also in the end Beowulf was paid in gold for the deed he did. The thing is though that Beowulf went into battle with Grendel before he ever know that he would be compensated in gold for his deeds. Also
Heroism is bravery. “Meaning "man who exhibits great bravery” in any course of action is from 1660s in English.’’ (etymonline.com) Malala Yousafzai is a hero because she stands up for what she believes in and she demonstrates bravery. “As a child, she became an advocate for girls' education, which resulted in the Taliban issuing a death threat against her. The world needs heroes, but what really is a hero? A hero is someone who shows remarkable perseverance and courage. Perseverance means that you never give up and courage is when you are not afraid to do something. A hero should also be hard working which means they always do their best and does it diligently. Anyone who shows any of these qualities is a hero.
What is a hero? Are soldiers at war heroes? What about Malala Yousafzai and Rosa Parks? Are they considered heroes? The Merriam Webster dictionary describes a hero as “a person who is greatly admired for great acts”. Yet, is this definition enough to define what heroism truly is? Heroism is not about executing epic acts and gaining glory or fame from it. True heroes put others’ needs before theirs; never give up when faced with overwhelming obstacles and stand up for their beliefs regardless of the consequences.
The personality of the heroes in medieval stories are what causes us to classify them as heroes. Beowulf has physical strength that can not be compared to anybody alive. That physical strength helps play into Beowulf’s character which causes him to defeat his enemies with much more ease than everybody else. In addition to Beowulf’s physical strength Beowulf is a courageous person. Beowulf fights and defeats the terrible monster Grendel without being asked or told to by any person to help out Hrothgar and the Danes. After that, Beowulf defeats Grendel’s mother to help out the Danes once again. In the end of the story, as an old king of the Geats Beowulf protects the Geats from a vicious dragon that is attacking the kingdom. Doing this ultimately
To be a hero it was meant that you were a great warrior, but still have the values of being kind and modest. Before Beowulf arrived to Herot he was known for his heroism, which was shown again and again during the fight with Grendel, the fight with Grendel’s mother, and his final battle with the dragon. While his heroism was shown at each of these events, there were changes in his heroic nature over time. Regardless of these changes, he was still seen as the mighty hero throughout the epic poem of Beowulf.
