I would consider a hero as someone who being very brave, loyal, one who never gives up, and one who protects or saves others. I believe Beowulf has all of these traits. Beowulf is a hero because he fought off a lot of people for a town of people he did not even know and had never even met. He even came across the seas for them. He is very loyal because he was willing to risk his life for Hrothgar’s people day in and day out. Due to Beowulf’s loyalty, super strength and bravery to come fight off people, many people would say he was a hero. Beowulf is loyal because he did not even hesitate to go fight a huge monster that nobody thought he had a chance against. He went across the sea to a new country and knew nobody there and went to go save all of their lives just …show more content…
“Fast the days fleeted; the float was a-water, The craft by the cliff. Clomb to the prow then Well-equipped warriors: the wave-currents twisted” (21-23). This quote shows Beowulf and his soldiers’ journey across the seas, on the way to come save the town. Beowulf had super strength in order to defeat as many people as he did and who he slayed. “To pierce the monster with the point of my weapon, My obedient blade; battle offcarried” (58-59). This quote shows that he was fighting the monster and he was close to killing him. Beowulf would often fight monsters that were a whole lot bigger than him but that never stopped him from fighting. He was really good at fighting and would often slay others nobody thought he had a chance against. The town’s people probably even thought he was crazy and had no
People seem to consider a hero as someone who risks their life to save another. Beowulf sets off to fight Grendel for the glory, not just the satisfaction of saving people. “When we crossed the sea, my comrades/ And I, I already knew that all/ My
Moreover, Beowulf continues to prove himself as a worthy Anglo-Saxon hero because of his selflessness. He fights for the greater good of the people and for the most part disregards all fame, glory, and accolades. It would be impossible to be completely selfless because there is no such thing as a selfess good deed. QUOTE *
The poem of beowulf is important to us because, it teaches us about Loyalty, and the Anglo-saxon culture. The reason the book of beowulf has loyalty in it is because it has people in the book who are actually loyal. One of these people that are loyal in the book is Beowulf, he shows signs of loyalty in the book when he agrees to Hrothgar to rid his kingdom of the monstrous evil named Grendel who has been terrorizing the mead hall for the past 12 years. Then when grendel's mother attacks the hall for revenge for the death of her son, Beowulf tells everyone that he will stay and fight grendel's mom.
Being a hero can be defined many different ways. Several qualities like courage, respect, and strength can define heroism. A hero is noted for his or her actions for being brave, powerful, and acting with honor. In the epic poem, Beowulf, the main character Beowulf shows all of these characteristics by defending the Danish king, Hrothgar, and his people. He is a true hero by honoring his country and exerting his power and strength to protect others. Beowulf embodies the qualities of bravery, being powerful, and demonstrating his honor; therefore, he can be considered a true hero.
Loyalty and courage are two themes that emerge throughout the poem ‘Beowulf by Seamus Heaney’. With a focus on an extract in Beowulf, this essay will explore how Seamus Heaney shows the themes loyalty and courage through the use of diction and imagery.
As Beowulf lies at rest, the question must be asked. Was he a true hero? Wanting only to help the towns people and keep them safe? Or just a mighty man wanting to be king, loathed in fame and riches? That is something that may always stay
It’s a very simple question, but one that could spark quite a debate. Is Beowulf truly a hero? While he was indeed a savior, he also did several things for his own greed for glory. In this regard, he is and isn’t a hero. There’s only one problem. What allows someone to simultaneously be and not be a hero? Sometimes, we must focus not on someone’s actions to see who they are, but their thoughts, intentions, and motivation.
“It’s not about having the absence of fear, it’s about having dominance over it” (Steve Maraboli). This quote reveals that dominance can provide strength to overcome adversity. Everybody has a fear that is holding them back, but it is the people who overcome those apprehensions who achieve success. For instance, in Beowulf, by anonymous, and The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the characters looking for dominance are constantly dealing with hardships. Dominance is hard to earn, although easy to lose, even when you feel undefeatable.
When asked to list virtues of a hero, traits such as patience and wisdom usually come to mind. However, in Beowulf, the protagonist possesses a characteristic that is not typically found in a traditional adventurer: conceitedness. The epic poem Beowulf reveals that, in order to achieve glory, a hero must possess a degree of immodesty. Examples of this can be seen when Beowulf first meets Hrothgar and in Beowulf’s response to Unferth’s challenge.
A hero is a person who, faced danger and adversity and still displays a sense courage and bravery. Through all his trials and tribulations Beowulf still managed to keep his courage.
Why is beowulf a hero? He is a hero because he protects people from monsters and dragons. He will fight without weapons or with weapons. Some of the monsters he can’t fight with weapons. Beowulf is the strongest among men. Beowulf can kill monster with his bare hands.
Beowulf’s embodiment of both warrior-like and king-like heroic traits is the predominant reason he is so successful in Anglo-Saxon society; however, it is also the cause of his demise. As stated previously, Beowulf’s loyalty towards his people drives many decisions he makes, and when faced with the impeding threat of the dragon, Beowulf’s loyalty drives his decision to personally fight it. Although this action directly complies with the values of loyalty and protectionism associated with the heroic code of kings, it is directly contradicted by the ideal of political skills, that is kings making decisions with the best interest of their people in mind. Although at the time, fending off the dragon seems to Beowulf like the proper course of action
Was Beowulf really a hero? Indeed he was, showing off his heroic characteristic of bravery, intelligence, wisdom, and strength throughout his journey to defeat Grendel and save the Danes. Even after anointed as King of Sweden, he still demonstrated his act as a heroic figure to his people.
Would you be as brave as Beowulf was, adventuring out of his comfort zone into an unrecognizable area? In the epic poem, Beowulf shows many characteristics through his adventures. Loyalty was one of the many characteristics displayed by Beowulf. The idea of having a strong relationship with one another is a big part of this poem because reputation is the common way people recognize others. Loyalty guided Beowulf's every step; from his first to his last. Beowulf portrays loyalty to the people; which is critically important to the development of strong relationships and a well-functioning community.
After spending over a week reading the story "Beowulf", we can all come to the conclusion that he is a hero. Sure, he saves countries from monsters, has incredible strength and wisdom, and is fearless- the typical fictional hero. However, when I hear the word hero, I think in terms of an everyday hero. In my mind, a hero is someone who performs courageous acts even if the consequences can be fatal. A hero doesn't have to be some big muscled guy who beats up bad guys. My example of a hero is a fireman. He/she knows that they might be killed rescuing someone from a burning building, yet they still go in. Why? Probably for the honor and glory that people will give them.
