I pace back and forth in my cell waiting for my lunch. Finally, I smell the delicious giant steak arrive. I pounce at the steak and start chomping. Bite after bite I start to feel heavier. I lay in my cage filled with boredom. I fantasize about the vast meadows I used to roam as a cub. I miss my parents and friends constantly and I feel as if I am so alone. I feel depressed and powerless in this cage. I just wish I never injured my leg. At least they give me safety. Animals living under these circumstances may feel this way. Zoos are used for research and information about the animal kingdom. Zoos benefit people, by teaching them about animals. However, are zoos fair for the animals? Zoos have benefits, nevertheless they also have disadvantages. …show more content…
Zoos usually take away animals from their habitat, and provide smaller enclosed areas where they cannot practice any social skills that wild animals should. In article “Animals for entertainment” the author states, “the animal is deprived of its natural social structure and companionship,” zoos have caused animals to separate from their natural kind and only have social encounters with 1 or 2 other animals of the same species. However, others say zoos provide a safer environment for interactions. In the article “Pros and Cons of Zoos” Jil Augustine states, “ With all the illegal hunting and killing of animals that happen today, especially of the endangered animals, the zoo offers a safer place to live, and helps the endangered species continue surviving. The zoo can also be a better habitat for some animals who would have a difficult time surviving in the wild due to pollution of their habitat.” Jill st980resses some wild animals struggle and need more attention. Although this may be true, others say national wildlife parks can provide the same safety. In addition, they provide larger groups of …show more content…
Animals lose their freedom. Zoos usually take away animals from their habitat, and provide smaller enclosed areas where they cannot practice any activities wild animals should. In article “Should Animals be Kept in Zoos?” the author states, “animals are often bored and, as a result, some become aggressive and can lash out at other animals or zookeepers. In a study done on 40 chimpanzees in six different zoos, all of the chimps exhibited behavior their counterparts in nature did not. Some of these behaviors included rocking back and forth, tearing out their hair, self-mutilation, and the drinking of their urine.” It has been proven that zoos affect the animals behavior, and has led to them becoming bored and depressed. If they had lived in their normal habitat, they wouldn’t have to face behavioral changes. However, others say zoos are necessary for some animals to survive. In the article “Pros and Cons of Zoos” Jil Augustine states, “For example, zoos provide many different benefits to the animals that they may otherwise not receive. Some examples of these benefits are proper nutrition and medical care that they may not receive otherwise.” Jill stresses some wild animals do not get proper care. Although this may be true, others say national wildlife parks provide the same care and allow animals to be satisfied. Their behavior as well as their social lives are also changed due to living in a
One of the most fun, visually amazing functions to visit are zoo's. Growing up as a kid going to the zoo was so much fun and basically guaranteed a great day out. People have been complaining and questioning the role of zoo's for a long time now. Some claim that it actually kills the animals off faster. Others claim that zoo's actually help protect and preserve the lives of these animals. Only one can make a reasonable argument by studying sources, and finding out statistics. Based off of the articles, "The Stripes Will Survive", "The Zoos Go Wild", and "Our Beautiful Macaws and Why They Need Enrichment", we can truly get in-depth analysis about the role zoo's play.
Zoos have always been criticized because some claim that animals are being abused and mistreated due to the lack and care of certain zoos. However, zoos actually help many animals with research and are critically important for conservation purposes. People need to understand that zoos have programs that breed endangered animals as well as rescue programs for exotic animals that people are no longer able to support. Also, they have many hands on activities that allow people to get more connected to animals. In addition, zoos do not only focus on animals. They focus on environmental problems/concerns as well. Zoos help us stay educated about environmental impacts and animal care.
Animals kept in zoos has always been a controversial decision. Zoos have been around for 4,000 years. Many people argue about the impact a zoo has on an animal and the world. According to the article, ”Zoos: The Historical Debate”, “Some people argue that zoos play an important role in conservation of endangered animals, others say that zoos do more harm than good.” I believe that zoos play an important role in conservation. They also educate us about animals. Finally, zoos entertain us in many ways. In my opinion, zoos impact the world in a good way.
Zoos have been around for 4,000 years, for many years people have gone to zoos to see wild animals up close. What people do not know is animals don't have the best interest in being in a zoo. The article, "Zoos: The Historical Debate" from Globalanimal.org discusses some pros (positive sides) and cons (negative sides) of zoos. As well as how millions of people visit zoos around the world and how some argue that zoos are either places of education and conversation or unnecessary prisons. After reading the article a logical conclusion is zoos are detrimental to animals.
Zoos take giant roles to protect animals. In the magazines I read, "The Stripes Will Survive", and "The Zoos Go Wild," and the video that I watched called "Behind the Scenes with the National Zoo's Lion Cubs.", there are ways that they help the animals.
Some people go to zoos to see the wild animals, but that’s not all that they are for. People in groups such as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) may think that zoos cannot provide the needs to wild animals as the wild can. Zoos help animals. They have improved, helping to repopulate species and save animals in the wild.
First not all animals are treated equally in every zoo. But most importantly, they will always be going under this treatment until everyone is aware of the kind of care these animals are going through behind those cage doors. Or unless the authorities get more strict on how the zoos need to care and handle those animals, then maybe there could be a change in the lives of the animals. With research anyone can learn and educate themselves of what they can do to try to help those animals in
Zoos may seem fun to visit and exciting to see the animals; but what you don’t see is the suffering and depression that lies in these helpless creatures. There are many arguments whether or not zoos are good or bad, and if they should be removed or kept. Several think that zoos should be abolished or at least very much improved, due to animal cruelty. While, others want zoos to stay because it is beneficial for the animals and people. I strongly believe that zoos aren’t good for both the public and animals for numerous reasons.
There have been a lot of problems with animals in zoos. It has gotten to the point where zoos are hated and looked upon as a places of animal torture. Are zoos really that bad? Turns out, they are. They do not have enough space, they do not allow the animals to communicate with each other, and they sell the animals to cruel circuses.
According to an article form Doris Linn, an animal rights expert, for About News; zoos do provide some benefits keeping animals in captivity. A good zoo delivers excellent animal care with exception enclosures with plenty of room for the animals.
Zoos provide protection for animals. Some hunters may kill animals in the wild for their skin so they can sell it. In a zoo, this can never occur. Another reason that zoos should not be banned is that animals are really looked after in the zoo. If an animal got sick in the wild nature there is no one to treat it and most probably the animal will suffer from pain and may even die. However, if the same case was in a zoo, highly qualified vets will be available to deal with this situation appropriately and these vets will provide medicine to the sick or injured
Some people agree that animals should be kept in the zoo. They said it would be safer for the animals and they won’t be extinct. The amount of possibilities of them dying, shot by hunters or any other reason, still higher than the chances of their survival. Food and shelter are provided, medicine, and their breeding is being controlled. And many of the wild animals in zoos are ones that are on the endangered list as their amounts are rapidly diminishing. Letting them loose and returning them to the wild is not necessarily a safe option. (Mylot, 2007) In fact, zoo can be one of the educational studies for children and people who are interested with animals. Zoo is the only place that we can have an opportunity to see animal’s life really close and sometimes we can touch them. Zoos also provide lots of information about certain animals, children can have chance to get out of the classroom and learn so they can see natural beauty from different species of animals. Even children can see them from discovery channel but that’s really different if you see animal in real world, for an example, if you see crocodile, snake or shark in the movie, maybe you won’t afraid than you see the real one. According to Tudge, (1992, p.56) Zoos are the place where people can study animals and their habitat, even scientist don’t need to go
My first reason why zoos are not good for animals is, they don't treat the animals well. For example, a panda bear died from rat poisoning at a zoo. Some zoos don't even follow the laws. Some animals don't get enough exercise and can get injured. Zebras have died from starvation. According to Are Wild Animals Meant To Be Wild?
For years, zoos have been at the center of many controversies, as many believe them to be unsafe and unhealthy. Despite these negative claims, these menageries are beneficial to both humanity and the animal kingdom. Officially recognized zoos educate the public, all while providing care for and conserving wildlife.
Zoos play an important role in the conservation of animals in the wild, mostly endangered or exotic species. Zoos provide benefits for these animals in various ways.
