Positive behaviour support (PBS) is an approach to providing services to individuals who exhibit challenging behaviour. Since the early 1990s, PBS has received increasing attention from the behaviour-analytic community. Some behaviour analysts have embraced this approach, but others have voiced questions and concerns. Of course there will be important conflicts of interest between service users and their carers which will need to be faced up to at an individual level. But services should not be provided by exploiting the personal commitment and dedication of carers. Families who care for individuals whose behaviour presents challenges are subject to considerable and continual stress, both physical and psychological. Although staffs is not permanently on duty as family carers can be, they are still subject to the same stresses when supporting people whose behaviour challenges. This is true even in settings which aim to do no more than contain people. Similar concerns apply to staff as to carers. The higher aspirations often found in progressive services impose extra strain on staff and here too it is important to balance the demands of working constructively with people who can be very difficult, day in and day out, with the needs of individual staff for emotional and practical respite and ongoing support. Staff working in partnership with a service user’s family will become more aware of families' individual needs, and know more about an elderly person's home context, thus enabling them to be aware of how the care home is different or similar to their own home and understand the elderly person’s behaviour with this in mind.
A guideline to all staff on how pupil’s behaviour should be managed. It is important that this policy is constantly being applied to ensure full safety of the pupils; this is why all staff must be familiar with this policy.
Individual’s rights also need to be promoted in order for holistic support to be provided by professionals. All adults in a health and social care environment such as a care home have rights to their confidentiality, respect, choice and to have their individuality taken into consideration. They also have the right not to be discriminated against, to receive equal and fair treatment and also to have access to the policies and procedures of the health and social care organisation. They should know when and how to make a complaint should they feel there care need are not being met. Children in care settings also have promotion of rights. These individuals should always have the right to be heard and it remain confidential, to have their wishes considered, be provided with stimulating activities and the right to be safe and secure from harm.
These barriers relate to individuals having differing personalities, if someone has lack of self-esteem or poor interpersonal interactions and communication it can affect the way they treat others. They may be unaware of how to support someone with needs that are new to them or struggle to identify resources needed to support a client. If staff are unable to provide information to the residents or carry out tasks they may need additional training to gather greater knowledge on equality, diversity and inclusion; when staff are unable to acknowledge differences it can mean that individuals are discriminated against unintentionally. This would then have an impact on relationships and rapport built between staff and clients and discourage the residents to work with the staff if they believe they are not being understood or their needs are not being met, this can have further impact on their mental health and wellbeing, therefore it is crucial that staff and management work alongside residents and their families or friends to ensure that their voice is heard especially when considering person centred care, as many vulnerable adults may not have the capacity to challenge discrimination.
In this report I will be investigating how care services meet the needs of individuals by firstly analysing the needs of an individual using care services. Then I will go on to explain the roles of the care planning process in identifying needs, and explain the features of a positive care practise. After explaining that, I will analysis positive care environments and evaluate how they meet needs before finally explaining the role of legislation in promoting a positive care environment.
Although originally Ann was disappointed and frustrated that Yetunde was not able to help with lifting Angus and not able to carry out tasks such a collecting shopping, eventually Ann appears to have accepted this by understanding Yetunde’s role. Yetunde made her role clear to Ann and the family right from the beginning. Being honest and setting out clear expectations and boundaries is paramount in obtaining good working relationships, as the service user is not given any false pretence. This may cause frustration and disappointment, however it is the role of the care worker to ensure that their role is explained and understood by the service user and that expectations and boundaries are discussed to avoid confusion and problems later on in the relationship. Being honest gains respect and trust, these are key in building good, effective relationships between care worker and service user.

This enables different services and professionals to join together to prevent problems happening. It is used to support children, young people and families to help secure improved outcomes.
It is important to review care and support plans as people’s needs change. By including the person, their family then everyone knows what is happening and the family can help to monitor mood swings and behaviour. The individual and the family can express their views and preferences and any relevant risk assessments may be done with everyone involved. By monitoring the individual, a decision can be made as to whether the changes are effective and if the best care is being given to encourage independence and promote dignity.

Challenging behaviour can be explored in every client group however the client group explored here is older adults within informal care. Due to the Data Protection Act 1998 the name of the older adult involved in the care has been changed to Client X. Why challenging behaviour occurs can be explored and explained through many different avenues such as through the use of psychological theories and situational factors that can effect behaviour.
The majority of carers are women (finch and groves 1983) and significant proportions are under the age of 18. This is known as a young carer, which is defined as ‘someone, under the age of 18, who looks after, or helps to care for, a family member who has a disability, mental ill health, a blood borne virus or a problematic use of drugs or alcohol. They may provide hands-on caring, and/or may be affected themselves by someone in their family who needs care’ (Dundee Carers Centre, 2009). There are difficulties identifying young carers because many do not disclose their caring role for fear of being separated from their parents and family members, bullying and social exclusion. Also there is a large amount of emotional strain for younger carers who do not access the services they are entitled to.
