There are many ways figurative language can be expressed. One way of expressing figurative language is music. Taylor Swift’s song Mean is a good example of this because it contains similes and metaphorical elements. She expresses how other people’s words can emotionally damage ones feelings, “You, with your words like knives and swords and weapons that you use against me” (Taylor Swift, Mean). This simile is a direct comparison between weapons and words. The “knives and swords” are being used against the author (Taylor) by the other person. This simile gives people an image of weaponry physically harming a person but not actually physically harming them. Since weapons like knives and swords are being compared to words, the literal meaning
“I gave my all for you, now my heart's in two.” This line shows how the speaker put their heart on the line and a girl broke his heart. The song explains how the speaker is done with this girl and is moving on and never wants to talk to them again. The theme is important in this song and the speaker gets it across very effectively. The songwriter was also very good at using figurative language. This paints a picture in the reader’s head and makes the song easier to understand. The song S.O.S. by The Jonas Brothers uses good figurative language, has a great theme, and shows how the speaker moved on. Connect the thesis and introduction. Put the paragraphs in order of the thesis.
In the song Never Again ,you hear multiple parts where the songwriter redirects you towards the holocaust. For example, “moving targets who walk with the star on their sleeve.” During the intro, a man speaks Hebrew and it sounds like a prayer. The author also uses figurative language to emphasize the importance of what happened in the holocaust. He quotes things like, “never again shall we march like sheep to the slaughter…” in addition to, “ stripped of our culture, robbed of our name…” by saying these things he stresses the tragedy of taking orders, and before long, dying like sheep. In the second quote he causes it to be known, how the men, women, and children who received a number appeared as cattle to the authoritarians, not human, nevertheless,

In Taylor Swift song, “our song” is about her boyfriend and her not having a song for each other. If you know Taylor Swift, you would know that most of her songs are about her relationships. Figurative language is a main component in showcasing the emotions the characters reveal. An example being when the author writes “ The children huddled up to her and breathed like little calves waiting at the bars in the twilight.” This portrays the children's emotions with more emphasis and really shows how they watched everything Granny Weatherall did with precision. This type of writing really helps the reader understand what is going on within the characters and their actions. The author also displays figurative language in the way she describes how John would be in the situation of them still being together. She describes him as being more of a child, rather than taking a parent role.
One example of figurative language is repetition. Although there were multiple lines of repetition the one that stood out the most was “piece by piece” which was featured in the most important parts of the song, which is the title of the song, part of the chorus and the bridge. One line in the song is “But piece by piece, he collected me” (line 7) which is part of the chorus. She is talking about how her father left her in pieces and her husband is the one who put her back together. Another important part is “Piece by piece, he restored my faith” (line 14). Her husband was the one to show her how a true man should act and how a good father should be, unlike Kelly’s own
Figurative language is better than literal because it allows the reader to understand the author in clearer and more entertaining way. Some examples of figurative language would be metaphors,
Taylor Swift performs to cheering crowds at pre-Super-bowl concert; Calls it her last in 2017
Everyone can relate to at least one Taylor Swift song. Whether you relate it to another person in your life, current world issues, or even your pet. She has written numerous songs that people of various ages can relate to. This is only one of the countless reasons that Taylor Swift is one of my favorite artists. Taylor Swift’s music is one of my passions; the other is politics.
Figurative language is often used as a means to paint a picture, especially in racist situations. In Tableau, the main characters are described to be, “Locked arm in arm they cross the way/The black boy and the white,” (Cullen 1-2). This sets up the scene of a white and black friend. An example of a metaphor would be, “The golden splendor of the day/The sable pride of night,” the white boy being the day and the black boy being the night (Cullen 3-4). This quote signifies that they need each other like the day needs the night. In Incident, there is more imagery than any other figurative language. For example, it is stated, “Now I was eight and very small,And he was no whit bigger,/ And so I smiled, but he poked out/ His tongue…” which shows that the white boy picking on the black boy were both the same size (Cullen 5-8). Another piece of figurative language would be the last stanza, “I saw the whole of Baltimore/From May until
An example of figurative language from the novel is, “When he finally pulls away it’s like a blanket has come down over my brain.” This is an example of a simile. This simile helped my understanding of the novel by demonstrating how Lena really felt when she kissed Alex. Lena was a rule follower, and became a rebel. This simile shows how you can change from a goody two shoes to a rebel if you follow your
When we began brainstorming for the introduction and conclusion we thought we had a good handle on what we wanted to say and what we were supposed to say. We watched the video once more, we used the handouts and worksheets we filled out during the week in order to find the claim we collectively wanted to make. However, when we received feedback, we realized we weren’t building an argument or analyzing Taylor Swift’s argument, but we had just summarized her video and song. We were all confused on exactly we were supposed to say then and we all also were terrified to say the wrong thing in our essay because we all had not done well on previous writing assignments in the class. Each of us are very methodical and tend to stay in our heads rather
Figurative language is used to create a special effect or feeling. It is characterized by figures of speech, language that compares, exaggerates, or means something other than what it first appears to mean. There are many instances of figurative language that can be found within Malala’s speech, but I’m just going to highlight the ones that stuck out to me. One of the most impactful uses of figurative language that I came across was a metaphor. In order to convey determination to learn, she referenced her “thirst for education.” I thought that this was very impactful because it compares education to one of the basic necessities of life, water. Another great use of figurative language within her speech was the use of symbolism. Throughout her speech, Malala uses herself as a symbol for various issues that she cares about, but it’s very evident when she claims to be other girls that have had to fight for their rights. Malala uses
