Tochia Hendrix Jordan 6 February 2016 Romance Embodied through Figurative Language in Taylor Swift’s “Red” The song “Red” was written and recorded by famed singer/songwriter Taylor Swift for her album of the same name. It is a song that is full of figurative speech; the songstress makes use of similes, metaphors, and imagery. These three techniques work together to convey the many emotions the singer feels when she looks back at the end of relationship. “Red” is a song that is about remembering a relationship and thinking about the emotions—good or bad—that it brought on. The first two lines of the song, “Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street /Faster than the wind, passionate as sin, ending so suddenly,” provide an example of how Swift uses similes in this song. The artist is writing about how passionate, wild and reckless this progressing relationship was, even though it eventually came to an abrupt halt. Swift again makes use of the simile when she writes, “Loving him is like trying to change your mind once you’re already flying through the free fall.” This line can be interpreted to mean that Swift began to have second thoughts about the relationship, but she was already in love, so it was too late to back down. …show more content…
In the lines “Losing him was blue like I’d never known / Missing him was dark grey all alone,” the use of the color blue shows that the artist felt incredibly sad when the relationship initially ended, and the color grey is here used to describe the immense depression she felt when the relationship was over. The writer also describes how wonderful her love was for the other person by using the color red. An example of this is the following
The color red symbolics all of the colors and how each can have numerous emotions coming
Another color mentioned at points in the story is red. Red tends to be a color of sadness and disappointment. It appears when Elena goes to Eugene’s house and his mother appears at his door. Elena depicts his mother to have a red face with red hair. That’s the author hinting that something bad is about to happen. The worst comes when she attempts to go into the study but his mother will not allow her in. It was very disappointing for Elena since she had been trying to meet up with Eugene
Red means many ideas. For example that “ to Ethan, still in the rosy haze of his hour with Mattie, the sight came with the intense precision of the last dream before waking” (Wharton 22). Red seems to represent the romantic feelings Ethan has for Mattie. Red symbolizes the interest he has in her. Red also is meant to represent lust as that“she wore her usual dress of darkish stuff, and there was no bow at her neck; but through her hair she had run a streak of crimson ribbon.
In this passage, Prose gives the reader his feelings and attitude towards nature. Giving off the impression that she has respect and dedication for it. She releases a positive message towards the subject and believes that it is a necessity for life. Throughout this passage the author uses effective figurative language and imagery. Nature can only be seen and felt by certain people. And when they are able to see nature it is a blissful and tranquil image. The wilderness has much more to offer than is the streets.
The poem “Fight” by Laurel Blossom is full of poetic devices that help develop the theme. In the poem, Blossom is writing about how she and her lover are very different (opposite), and how her lover is more prepared and she is more of a free spirit. The summary very directly correlates with the theme, which is that opposites attract. Although the author is having troubles with the differences between her and her lover, she is trying to overlook them to be with her lover. The poem has a plethora of poetic devices, such as imagery, assonance, and rhyming words, therefore helping the theme.
The speaker opens the song with expressing her desire of a conveyance, that takes her away from her present surroundings. This song is full of multiple literary devices such as hyperboles, metaphors, and imagery. The hyperboles in the song emphasize strong feelings such as love, hate, and pain. For example, “Just [going to] stand there and watch me burn” (Rihanna, 1), is emphasizing that she is in extreme amounts of pain and all that her significant other is doing, is watching her suffer. “You ever love somebody so much you can barely breathe when [you are] with [them]” (Eminem, 33), emphasizes and how he is so in love with
Toni Morrison’s Beloved is a genius piece of literature that stands out from the others. Following its publishing date in September of 1987, it was rewarded with a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction only a year later. This novel holds an abundance of literary merit for numerous reasons but the main one being that it combines the powerful forces of history and literature into a pure work of art. Not only does this book display vivid historical accuracy in the perspective of a slave during the Reconstruction era in the United States, but the language that explains this particular situation is rich in figurative language and challenges readers line by line.

The Author uses different color to express different emotions of the main character, Celie, in The Color Purple. For example blue, red, black, and the most important one the color purple. Celie’s search for something she has never experienced is the symbolization of the mankind’s search for love and happiness. The color purple itself symbolizes love in the story.
A poem is a piece of writing that arouses strong emotions because of its beauty. Poems can be expressed in both a speech and a song. The famous pop/country artist, Taylor Swift, expresses her poems in the form of songs. Her poems are written in a modern literature. She contributes to this literature because she writes her songs based on what is going on in the modern world and in her life. This is especially noticeable in her song, “Shake it off.” In this song she describes how people spread rumors and that you need to just let them go. This relates to the world today because bullying is a huge factor in today’s society. This poem offers readers different ways to deal with being gossiped about or bullied. It also shows that being yourself
F. Scott Fitzgerald uses colors to symbolize emotion throughout the novel. An example would be when Nick was observing Gatsby’s house the day of the party, “In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne, and the stars.” (39 Fitzgerald) The gardens represent Gatsby himself. Like his gardens Gatsby puts in a lot of effort into himself to look good, he makes it known that he has a ridiculously lavish lifestyle. Therefore how he feels is how the house is going to appear, in this case the gardens appear blue because he hasn’t met his long lost lover, Daisy, yet and that causes him to be really sad and depressed. The blue also represents how lonely he feels because he doesn’t have many friends and his efforts to try and reach/ meet Daisy again haven’t given him results. Color was also used to show emotion when Gatsby and NIck returned to West Egg after going to town with Daisy, Jordan, and Tom, “the shadow of the tree fell abruptly across the dew and ghostly birds began to sing among the blue leaves.” (152 Fitzgerald) In this quote, the blue represents how hurt and confused Gatsby feels. He had always thought that Daisy never loved anyone
In The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald uses gray to show hopelessness. Fitzgerald uses the quote “but above the gray land and the spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it.” (pg.23) He used the color gray to describe the valley of ashes many times. The valley of ashes was a place where poor people lived and many bad things happened, Tom cheated on Daisy with Myrtle and she was from the valley of ashes, Myrtle was also hit by a car and hit there. The color gray is know around the world as meaning sad or depressed such as when people say the skies are gray to show someone is sad.
