Definition Essay- The Evolved Definition of Community The definition provided in The American College Dictionary from 1964 says “a group of men or women leading a common life according to a rule.” I never really viewed community in this manner. Many of us think of the word “community” as a group of people who live near each other. We forget that a community is actually just a group of people with common interests or characteristics who often happen to live near each other. Communities can be bound by race, religion, economic standings, political standings, and most commonly, location. Frequently, communities fall into more than one of these categories. The definition of community has obviously changed over the years. If we look at …show more content…
In Charles Derber’s “The Good Man Fills His Own Stomach,” Derber refers to two very different communities. One is the Ik who lived in Uganda and were described as “unfortunate people expelled by an uncaring government.” The other, was an imaginary community from the Woody Allen movie Crimes and Misdemeanors. This community seemed to resemble a community from our present day upper class with only the best hotels, restaurants, and symphonic recordings. Although these two groups are very different, they each still follow the criterion of a community. Each are groups of people who have formed a sort of bond with each other because of a certain lifestyle, interests, or beliefs. When people use this word in present everyday conversation, their application of the definition is usually compatible with the first and third definitions of The American College Dictionary. The second definition, “the public,” is too general. A community is not only a public, but a public with a common interest. In my area, when the word community is used, the person is usually referring to the West Bloomfield community. Talking about symbols and signified, the West Bloomfield community originally started out as just the group of people who lived in the town of West Bloomfield. Now the people of the area have come to make “The West Bloomfield Community,” signify something entirely different. It currently means any group of people who are wealthy and Jewish no matter their locality.
A community is a social group whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a cultural and historical heritage.. The book A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines. Is about a young black man named Jefferson in 1947 Louisiana who is used as a scapegoat for a local murder. He must face his upcoming execution and is helped by Grant Wiggins the local teacher and Reverend Ambrose the local clergyman. What makes a strong community is the practice of acceptance and responsibility. Gaines demonstrates this through Jefferson’s transformation , Grant’s support and Rev. Ambrose belief. Three characters in this story teach us about acceptance and responsibility. Jefferson has to keeps his head high and not beg for his life
A community is a place where people around supposed to be able to live and thrive together. When one thinks of a community, the image that most likely is visualized is one of a place where each person lives harmoniously with all the other members of that community. While this may be the typical image of a community, it is not the realistic view. In reality communities can share both good and bad aspects. In Place Matters: Metropolitics for the Twenty-First Century Peter Dreier, John Mollenkopf, and Todd Swanstrom make the argument that the place a person lives ultimately matters over all else; the place which a person lives effects the choices that that he/she makes and determines his/her ability to obtain a
According to Stanhope and Lancaster (2008) defines a community as: “A social group determined by geographic boundaries and/or common values and interests. Its members know and interact with one another. It functions within a particular social structure and exhibits and creates norms, values, and social institutions” (World Health Organization [WHO], 1974, pg. 7).
Community is defined as a group a people living in an area under the same conditions. Realistically, a community is so much more than this definition. It is people and their different beliefs that form a community. In the town of Milagro, Amarante Cordova, Ruby Archuleta, and a town coming together to rescue a fellow community member from jail exemplify the true spirit of what community is.
The best way to define a community will never be clear. You have your own feelings on communities and our thoughts on it will always be different from everyone else's. Everyone has a different perspective on communities, it is endless. All of the definitions relate to what I think about a community. Community to me means “home”. A community is where I have grown up and learned important life lessons. The things that matter most to me in my community are my family, my
A community is a group of people who live in the same area, interact with each other, and share certain norms and values. A community is defined as a locality-based entity, composed of systems of formal organizations reflecting societal institutions, informal groups, and aggregates that are interdependent and whose function or expressed intent is to meet a wide variety of collective needs (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012).
To me, community is a group of people working, living and being in the same local area or place. The idea of a community as virtual would mean to include a community of people sharing social and common interests, ideas and goals (perhaps) via a social network. What it means for our society is that communities are connected virtual throughout society.
The Community is defined based on individual perception. It is often described as societal structure which recognized individuals or groups of people living together; people in a particular environment. However, it also reflects groups of people who share a common interest; neighborhoods, housing are communities within a large physical environment. The sub communities that makes up the larger environment composed of race, culture, ethnicity, professional ties, and interest. For example, the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community, the medical community, the Haitian community, and the elderly community. The HIV/AIDS patients are considered a community too.
Community is built of two main elements. First, community requires communal caring. Members need to put themselves in positions where they are able to relate to other members and does everything “within reasonable limits of self-sacrifice” (65). The second is communal reciprocity. Individuals will serve other members of the community, not for exchange of goods, but to provide generosity and support. These elements of community appear in the lives of all individuals, even the most capitalist ones. Humans are entirely capable of these.
A community is where a group of people with many different backgrounds are united by one common thing. College and universities think putting young adults on a campus where they eat, sleep and learn together will make them become one community. Communities are made from within not from outside forces smashing people together. Florida Atlantic has many communities inside of it created by people who have the same interests in life. FAU doesn't have one set community as a whole because they are mostly characterized into different smaller groups and when brought together they form smaller cliques that don't usually interact.
Community is family. To me community has never been about the proximity of one person to another, but of the connection that those two people share. What makes community special is the idea that a collective group of diverse people that all share different attitudes, interests, and goals can come together and unite to bring something into existence. Members of a community are expected to look out for one another and work in solidarity with one another for the community. As a human being, it is imperative to be a member of some sort of community because, in a similar way of being part of a family, the experiences and ideals shared within the community give people a sense of purpose and place within society.
A community is a group of people that share a common or similar characteristic with each other. Some communities can also consist of people living together or practice worship. My essay will include the communities that I am part of which are my dance, school and church communities.
The definition of community when I google it, is “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” I would describe community as a group of people who have common goals, thoughts, or interests.
Communities can be found everywhere and can be created anywhere. You may be unaware of it, but you are part of a community not only based on your location, but also based on your lifestyle, your religion, your heritage, your education, or your abilities. As Hewitt once said, “Community provides a psychological world and a place of identification for its members.” Identifying yourself with a particular community may be easier than it
The term community is a more than geographic boundaries. It is a group of people
