Chapter 16.2, Problem 5CC
For the problem given in Comprehension Check 16-4, write a complete program to implement the flowchart you created. Be sure to include appropriate comments in your code. Suppress all assignment statements other than the final answer, which should appear on the screen. Use the following values to test your code: V0 = 10 mph, t = 0.02 hr, a = 3 m/s2.

Learning Goal:
To calculate the principal stresses and maximum
in-plane shear stress for a plane state of stress.
The normal and shear stresses for a state of stress
depend on the orientation of the axes. For a general
plane state of stress, there is one orientation where
the two normal stresses are a maximum and
minimum and the shear stresses on the faces of
the element are zero. The two normal stresses 01
and 2 are known as principal stresses. The
directions of the faces on which the principal
stresses act are known as the principal planes. The
principal stresses can be calculated using the
following formula:

If you look at my notes to solve the problem there is already a formula in place as I always thought the Patm should also be multiplied by the Area in the numerator, but it's not if I look at this specific tutorial solution given by my course but it's not explained why. I have done a while ago a very similar problem with using that formula in my notes and it gave me the right results, but it's not working for this one. Could you please help me understand why as I have a test coming soon? The normal and shear stresses for a state of stress depend on the orientation of the axes. If the stresses are given in one coordinate system (Figure 1), the equivalent stresses in a rotated coordinate system (Figure 2) can be calculated using a set of transformation equations. Both sets of stresses describe the same state of stress. In order to use the transformation equations, a sign convention must be chosen for the normal stresses, shear stresses, and the rotation angle. For the equations below, a positive normal stress acts outward on a face. A positive Try acts in the positive y-direction on the face whose outward normal is in the positive x-direction. The positive direction for the rotation is also shown in the second figure. The stresses in the rotated coordinate system are given by the following equations: στ σy + cos 20+Try sin 20 2 2 σετ συ = σy' cos 20-Try…arrow_forward

You are launching water balloons at a rival team using a large slingshot. The other team is set up on the opposite side of a flat-topped building that is 30.0 ft tall and 50.0 ft wide. Your reconnaissance team has reported that the opposition is set up 10.0 m from the wall of the building. Your balloon launcher is calibrated for launch speeds that can reach as high as 100 mph at angles between 0 and 85.0° from the horizontal. Since a direct shot is not possible (the opposing team is on the opposite side of the building), you plan to splash the other team by making a balloon explode on the ground near them. If your launcher is located 55.0 m from the building (opposite side as the opposing team), what should your launch velocity be ((a) magnitude and (b) direction) to land a balloon 5.0 meters beyond the opposing team with maximum impact (i.e. maximum vertical speed)?
