Answers :

A. The maternal influence can be seen in the coiling of snails. When there is a maternal influence, the genotype of the mother affects the phenotype of the children. For example, the D allele correlates to sinistral shell coiling while the D allele corresponds to dextral coiling. D is superior to d. All of their offspring will be of the Dd genotype when a parental DD (dextral) male parent crosses with a dd (sinistral) female parent. Since D is dominant to d, all of their offspring should display dextral shell coiling, but because the female parent (mother) had sinistral (dd) shell coiling, they will all exhibit sinistral shell coiling. Therefore, the mother's genotype must be known in order to predict the direction in which the offspring's snail shell will coil.
