Contact dermatitis is characterized by reddened, inflamed skin caused by contact with certain kinds of allergens. The different types of contact dermatitis include allergic contact dermatitis which develops an allergic reaction when exposed to a foreign substance like nickel or gold jewelry, latex gloves, poison oak, etc,  irritant contact dermatitis which is caused due to the exposure of the skin to a toxic material like battery acids, kerosene, detergents, etc, and photo contact dermatitis which is caused due to the reaction between the ingredients of the skin product with the sun. The symptoms of allergic contact dermatitis include scaly and flaky skin, burning and itching skin, sun sensitivity, swelling in the eyes, face, or groin, darkened or leathery skin, etc. The symptoms of irritant contact dermatitis include blistering, cracking skin, ulceration, stiff and tight skin, etc. The symptoms of photo contact dermatitis include blisters, brown streaks, and skin lesions. People with certain occupations are more prone to contact dermatitis and they include metal workers, construction workers, scuba divers, gardeners, health care and dental employees, etc. One of the complications of the condition is an infection by bacteria and fungi caused due to the repeated scratching of the infected area.
