Question
One possible side-reaction of this experiment is biphenyl, explain with words how it can be formed and how would u know?
Expert Solution
Step 1
For the above Grignard reagent there is a possibility tto form biphenyl as a byproduct or side product.
This product can be formed by the dimerisation of two bromobenzene rings.
When one molecule of bromobenzene will react with Mg, diethyl ether it will form Grignard reagent, in which benzene ring will have partial negative charge and -MgBr will have partial positive charge.
Then the benzene ring with partial negative will attack to the bromobenzene to form a biphenyl as a substitution product.
