Abigail Bilderback Mrs. Misselhorn 5th hour Language Arts 29 March 2017 Should Kids Have Summer Break? Say goodbye to the three months of summer vacation and say hello to year-round school! Year-round school has very many positive features, it can decrease summer learning loss, stress, and the United States students catch up with the rest of the world. The decrease of brain drain will improve learning, teachers won’t have to reteach the student, that’s stressful and kids will do better on the state test, so the U.S. can catch up. Year round school is killing three birds with one stone. The first reason why kids shouldn’t have a summer break is because during summer they forget what they learned. According to Tammy Bennecke, Over the summer …show more content…
According to Lexi Fye, many students do the same thing day after day, they go home, do homework, and some do sports. This can get very stressful for students. Having year-round school allows students to be less stressed, because they have a longer period of time to learn, and they don’t have to cram it all in a few months. The struggling students have the chance to get more help and more time to comprehend (Fye). Teachers and students can get more breaks in between learning, so if they need extra time on a lesson plans or righting assignment they can finish it during breaks. Parents have a different story, but if they have younger children after school they need a babysitter. It can be very stressful to find a babysitter. Parents that have children going to a year round school have an advantage. When students get off of school its closer to holiday breaks so parents can be with their family …show more content…
Summer vacation gives students plenty of free time, which can relief stress. It is a good thing to stay away from stress. Being stressed is not healthy, it takes away the body’s ability to fight infections, avoid injury, or to sleep and digest food properly (Scott). People with stressful jobs or lifestyle are kind of in danger, if they don’t get enough sleep and they are driving they have late reflexes, which leads to car accidents. The summer vacation is helping the students, because its keeping them safe and not work so hard they aren’t motivated to learn. All in all, year-round school is helping with education. Year-round school is helping with summer learning loss, stress, and the united states is catching up with the rest of the world. At first year round school sounds awful, because it’s taking away summer vacation, but really its giving small breaks in between the school
Snow days, teacher institutes, half-days, and holidays bring happiness to every student. With year round schooling, the year feels shorter and faster because the calendar includes more days off of school and longer breaks. The breaks are evenly spread across the calendar. This provides students with time off from school, but not enough to lose what they learned. Year round schooling also helps with transitioning from one grade to the next. Every student hates to see summer end and dreads going back to school even more. Without a long summer, students focus more on school and do not have much time to think about moving from middle school to high school. Days off from school allow families to take more vacations and spend time together. This reduces the amount of negativity or hatred towards school and students develop a positive
Do you like the relaxing summer break? Well, if you do, how would you feel about year round school. Year round school has been a topic talked about throughout the whole world. There are many advantages and disadvantages for industries, schools, students, teachers, and even parents. Lots of conflicts occur when changing the school year to year round. It can be unhealthy for everybody including students, parents, and even certain businesses. Year round school can lead to poor things.
One reason why year round school is a bad option is it distorts to family life and creates money problems. Year round school during the holidays is difficult to plan trips around the breaks with them being shorter and everybody’s schedule varies its hard planning around everybody’s schedule during shorten school vacations when parents are scheduled to work. For instance, Matthew Lynch says parents struggle to schedule family vacations with varying work and school schedules (The Disadvantages of YRS). Usually vacations are taken during summer break but with no summer break parents would have to remove their kids from school more than often causing them to fall behind. Also year round school isn’t the best choice because teens may lose their
Year-round school is not a good idea. For one, the cost of essential items in school will rise. For parents, it gives them less time for “family time” since their children are too busy doing homework. Also, the student’s homework creates stress and they can’t do the outside activities they desire. Without year-round schools, it would benefit the school, the parents, and the students.
As a student who use to attend a year-round school, all schools should become year-round. Year-round education will be an improvement for students who have never been in a year round school. There are roughly 3,000 schools enrolled to Year-Round Education and more than 2 millions students in those Year-Round schools in the United States. Year-Round schooling would help students cut down on the amount of stress they develop throughout the year. When having a long 3 month summer break you will forget a lot of information that teachers had taught; but if you was to go to school for 9 weeks and get out for 3 weeks to come back to school and start the next 9 weeks of school. More counties should have year-round school to prevent students from dropping out. It is proven that less students drop out that go to year-round school instead of regular.
Some say year-round school doesn't give students enough time to unwind. That is an imprecise statement. Students who don't have enough time to “unwind,” avoid the summer “brain drain.” A summer brain drain is when students that go to a regular school with a 2-3 month summer forget a lot of what was learned in the previous school year. So as you can see, year-round school is the way to go. Other people say that year-round school is expensive. This is not an accurate statement. Actually, year-round school can help save money. It can help save money because the administrators don't have to hire as many personnel. This is why year-round school is better.
Year-round school is not a good idea. For one, the cost of essential items in school will rise. Also, it gives parents less time for “family time” because their children are too busy doing homework. For kids, homework and projects present them with too much stress. Without year-round schools, it would benefit the school, the parents, and the children.
Having year round school allows students to maintain knowledge that they’ve learned throughout the course of the year. On average, during the summer, kids lose about 2.6 months worth of mathematical skills, reading and spelling abilities decrease as well (Writers). This idea will help improve quiz and test scores because kids won’t have a huge gap of forgotten lessons of learned material. Also, teachers won’t have to review old information, they can proceed in further academic exercises. Therefore, students will accomplish more and prepare better for college.
Even though year-round school is hard to schedule, they offer more frequent breaks and a more successful learning environment. To begin, most schools offer the full 180 days and a couple breaks, but when you are in year-round school after 6-9 weeks of class you get 2-4 weeks off. With this 6-9 week stretch of school, students will be able to remember what they have learned when they go on break. This makes sense because if you think about how much you remember after the 3 month break in “normal scheduled” school, you don't remember very much. Next, when you have a year-round schedule, the school and staff benefits from it. The school all year long will be filled with motivated students. Teachers will be able to have more frequent breaks and
Year-round school may seem appealing at first, with increased time in the classroom and less time being “useless”, but it’s more complicated than that. More time in the classroom may not be perfect as it seems, summer break is more useful than it suggests, and schools will have more problems with staying open year-round. You have to think of the students and staffs mentality, too.
¨With year-round schooling, my child is much happier and self-confident now, and I know she will be well-prepared for the future,¨ said Savita Sanders. Year-round schooling does NOT mean that there are more school days. There will always be 180 days. I believe that year-round schooling will benefit students in many ways. These are three reasons why I believe that. The students won't forget over summer, there will be more opportunities for vacations, and it makes ¨bearing with school¨ easier.
Year-round school Pros outweigh the problems, for example, Year round schooling is good because it can help stem summer learning loss. This is because of the way the schedule is arranged they spread the summer break out into smaller breaks in theory declining the summer learning loss effect. The summer learning loss effect in itself is a big problem because there is time wasted reviewing material that all students should already know. It also prevents student teacher burnout by implementing breaks that are shorter but occur more often. Year round school can also enrich a student's’ educational experiences by allowing for the addition of intersessions or creative courses during breaks. A year-round school also allows more access to health care
Having a summer break is nice. There’s the warm weather to go camping or swimming. If there was year round school wouldn’t that take away from that? No, School should not go year round. The reasons for that tare because there’s more to do in the summer, less family time, and harder on the family budget.
Year round school affects a lot of people for many reasons. In the text it said that “most families plan vacations over the summer. Year-round schools restrict summer family vacations. They also don't allow students to go away to camp or take on summer jobs to earn money for the future.” This means that families usually will go on vacation in the summertime when it is warm out but year round schools are going to school at that time so they can’t go on a nice vacation. Also in the summer, kids sometimes do lemonade stands to earn money for their future but kids that go to year round schools can’t do that because they are stuck in school in the summer. Another piece of evidence from the text is that “too many breaks disrupt learning. The breaks
We shouldn’t have to go to year-round school one reason is there is too much stress in the schools can cause things bad to happen. Also you it will mess up yours and other people’s schedules. Furthermore, you can do other educational activities while going through the summer to remember what you were taught in the past year, for example, you can print out math sheets to work on (what you learned in the past year) to work on.
