The time period of the book is irrelevant. Dorothy is a girl who used to live in Kansas and her house got carried away to a mystical land and she needs to get to the wizard to get her back home. While she was walking on the path she encountered a scarecrow. She took him off his pole for he was hung on a pole to scare birds. He said he did not have a brain therefore he asked if he could come with her to find the Wizard. She agreed to him coming and the companions set off on their journey. They continued their walk and found the ‘Tin Woodman’ who had been rusted while cutting down a tree. He joined them wanting to get a heart. Then they met the ‘Cowardly Lion’ who wanted to be the real ‘King of the Jungle’ so the five companions resumed their journey (Dorothy, Toto, Scarecrow, Tinman, and the Cowardly …show more content…
But the Lion had the travelers get on his back and jumped across the ditch. Then they faced a field of deadly poppies(a plant that makes you fall asleep). Dorothy and Toto and the Lion fell into a very deep sleep. Since the scarecrow and the ‘Tin Woodman’ didn’t have human features they carried Dorothy and her dog out of the field. The Lion was too heavy so they got help from thousands of field mice . When they finally got to emerald city they had to wear goggles (‘Green Spectacles’) because the city was too bright otherwise they would go blind. They wanted to see Oz but they learned that he only visits you on separate days. They all encountered different forms of Oz, so that all of them were scared of him. They were all told that they had to kill the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’. They all thought they were incapable of killing her but they set off on their journey . Their journey was hard because the Wicked Witch knew they were coming. So she set troubles on their way but they were able to overcome her. Then she sent the baboons that were bound to a golden cap that the witch had. The owner of the cap could put in on and ask for three favors. The witch asked for the baboons to kill all of the companions. They pretty much killed the scarecrow and the Tinman. They could not lay a hand on Dorothy since she had a seal of protection from the Witch of the North, so they made her work in the kitchen.
Dorothy and her friends finally got to Emerald City. They finally got to see the Wiz and he told them that he would not grant any of their wishes unless she killed the wicked witch of the West. Dorothy and all of her friends were really disappointed. Eventually, Dorothy and her friends went to see the wicked witch of the West and the witch was very mean to them. The witch really wanted Dorothy’s slippers but she refused to give them to her. Dorothy is starting to get discouraged because the witch seemed to be more powerful than she was.

The main thing that occurred in the movie was death. Nineteen people were hung and a man was pressed to death. Rebecca and Mary were the two main characters who were accused and murdered. Rebecca was on of Sarah’s sister and was the first to be accused of being a witch. A year after Rebecca death they realized Rebecca was not guilty at all so they cleared her name by pronouncing that her soul was set free. Mary was Sarah’s other sister and had done nothing wrong but was still accused of being a witch. Mary was very religious, however she was going to be hanged and when she was she was praying. Sarah was the only one who survived, but barely. She was taken by a secret jailer and was kept in a shed for a whole year.

I think the second theme is the importance of the journey. The importance of the journey can be symbolized by the yellow brick road. Throughout the novel Dorothy travels along the yellow brick road on her journey to get home to Kansas. Similar to real life she meets new people, makes new friends and has new experiences. Life is full of issues just as the yellow brick road was full of unexpected obstacles. there were holes, dark forests and dangerous rivers. Encountaring experiences both difficult and enriching are the substance of learning about yourself and you relation to others. Dorothy’s escape from the Wicked Witch Dorothy motivates her to keep on with her attempt to get home. Dorothy had to overcome these obstacles just as we have to overcome obstacles that happened to us as we journey through life.
As the Tin Woodsman and Dorothy are on their journey, they encounter another symbolized character in the novel. This
The whole thing was a lie and it was very inhumane(The Salem Witch Trials). The girls all wanted supernatural things, so the girls met a woman named Tituba, who was a servant of Putnam, they then went into the forest to cast spells(The Salem Witch Trials). Paris caught the girls dancing in the forest and committing the crime of witchcraft(The Salem Witch Trials). The girls would then lie to everyone making them think that they were being controlled by other people performing witchcraft(The Salem Witch Trials).
We should all be familiar with the story of The Wizard of Oz. The protagonist, Dorothy, is swept into the magical land of Oz by a tornado, where she meets Glinda the Good Witch, who gives her the ruby slippers of the Wicked Witch of
the devil and where now witches, they freaked out and thought the worst that’s Salem was going
The common theme I will be exploring is “Good vs. Evil”. The theme is expressed in The Wizard of Oz” throughout the movie through the use of the antagonist, the Wicked Witch of the West pursuing the main character, Dorothy, for the shoes she wears (Fleming & LeRoy, 1939). The Wicked Witch wants the shoes for herself because they hold great power, but also because they belonged to her sister, The Wicked Witch of the East (Fleming & LeRoy, 1939). However, Glinda The Good Witch of the North, gifts them to Dorothy after she traveled to Oz, in her house and through a cyclone (Fleming & LeRoy, 1939). The house landed on the Wicked Witch of the East and
Despite what she may think, Dorothy is never in any real danger during her adventure. Though harm befalls her companions, she herself is never targeted. Dorothy, with the kiss from the northern witch, and the silver shoes is frightening to her adversaries. The winged monkeys flee upon seeing her, the Wicked Witch of the West becomes very nervous just being around her, even Oz is frightened after she manages to return from Winkie land. There are only two characters in the book from the United States, Dorothy who conquers all in her westward journey, and Oz who fools everyone into thinking he is a powerful wizard. In the real world these two characters are normal people, a young farm girl, and a man who works in a circus. The fact that these two regular Americans can go into the foreign land of Oz and gain power easily, is a testament to the power of America on the world
Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West is a fictional representation of many problems faced by the world in the past and present. It follows the life of Elphaba, who later becomes the “Wicked Witch of the West”, a result from her life experiences as a rebel against the Wizard of Oz, her unfortunate appearance of green skin, and several other trials she’s faced. Maguire was born in Albany, New York and lost his mother in childbirth. His father was a writer, but was very ill at the time of Maguire’s birth, so he and his three older siblings had to stay with family and Maguire even spent time in an orphanage before moving back with his father and his new wife. His family
Wicked, the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the East is a fantasy book by Gregory Maguire. It follows the life of the Wicked Witch, the character from the Wizard of Oz, from her birth to her death, or her pseudo-death. It also explores the question the nature of good and evil.
The scarecrow symbolizes the mindless people during the depression. As a result, the time era of the depression was the era of lots of chaos and people acting without a brain. After the encounter they set off and they met up with the tin man. Who just wanted a heart to live and love like any other man. The Tin man symbolized the heartless and careless people around the time of the depression.
