The Swastika originated over 3,000 years ago as symbol of good luck. (Symbology) It was very common from about 1,000 B.C. and was used in many cultures around the world, including China, Japan, India, and Southern Europe. By the middle ages it was well known and used every day by these cultures. Native Americans were another important culture to use the Swastika. It represented different meanings to various Native American tribes. It was a symbol the ancient Mississippian culture used to communicate their history, thoughts, ideas, and dreams. Looking back to the time of the Salem Witch Hunts, any reasonable person would conclude that those people had gone completely insane. So many citizens were slaughtered merely for the accusation of being a witch. What we may not realize now, is that witch hunts are still very prevalent in our society. Even in this day and age hundreds of thousands of people are persecuted unjustly. The prime example of a witch hunt that has gone on for hundreds of years and is still incredibly prevalent today is the witch hunt, or persecution against Christianity. There are those that believe the persecution of Christians is at an all time high and there are those who feel Christians aren’t necessarily targeted anymore today than they have been throughout history;
Witches consumed the minds of many in Europe from the last fifteen century through the seventeenth century, resulting in what is now known as a witch craze. Trials, mainly concentrated in southwestern Germany, Switzerland, England, Scotland, Poland, and parts of France, consisted of over 100,000 claimed witches from all over the continent. During this era, so-called witches were found to have connections with the Devil then were persecuted in tortuous ways. Three major reasons for the persecution of witches were religion, poverty, and social crises.

It appears as a decorative symbol in many Neolithic cultures, though we do not know if they used it in a religious sense of not. The swastika is seen most commonly, however, in India and the land surrounding it, where it is seen as a sacred religious symbol. When thought of in terms of ancient cultures, the swastika is largely grouped into the large category of ‘solar crosses’, which were used in worshipping the sun throughout much of the ancient world, and this can give us some clues into its ancient meaning. However, some experts have suggested that instead of representing the sun, or that the symbol’s four arms are meant to represent the four aspects of nature – the sun, wind, water, and soil. Still, others say that the four arms represent the four seasons, where the division of ninety-degrees represent the solstices and equinoxes. The Hindus use it to represent their God (Braham) in is universal aspect, the four directions of the world, and the four goals of life. In Buddhism, it is a visual representation of eternity. Still, it is most heavily used today in Jainism, where it represents the four places that the soul could be reborn after death, namely heaven, hell, as a human, or as flora and fauna. The followers of Jainism commonly fashion their offerings, which are commonly made of rice, into this

Interpretation of the symbolism behind the mask varies, however the rings are thought to invoke both the ridges of a black moth chrysalis, representing a girl’s transformation into a woman, and the ripples of water created as a leader rose from the water, the home of female spirits. The masks elaborately braided hair and scarification also refer to the appearance of this leader and what was considered ideally beautiful. The expression on the face is to convey the wisdom, grace, and self control that the young women would hopefully inherit.
