Everyone has a courageous moment in their life, but Johnny has multiple moments where he shows a true act of courage. The first event that shows that Johnny is courageous is when he saved Ponyboy from the Socs. There has been this rivalry between the Socs and the Greasers (the rich and the poor) which has caused a lot of fights. When Johnny’s best friend Ponyboy and him were in the park they were jumped by Bob and his group of Socs. They were drowning Ponyboy in the fountain and Johnny decided to take a courageous action and stab Bob to save Ponyboy. If it was not for Johnny, Ponyboy would be dead. Johnny knew that stabbing Bob would get him in trouble with the police, but he took the chance. “ You really killed him, huh, Johnny ?...
To begin, Johnny is innocent for the murder of Bob concidering that Bob was killing Johnny’s third party Ponyboy, leaving Johnny to use self defence. “ ‘I had
He may at times be afraid to stand up for himself but he is very courageous. One way Johnny shows courage is “We pushed open the door to the back room and found four or five little kids, about eight years old or younger, huddled in the corner. One was screaming his head off, and Johnny yelled, ‘’Shut up! We’re goin’ to get you out!” Page 92. This quote shows that Johnny is courageous because He went into a burning abandon church to save five or four kids that were about eight years old or younger. He risked his life to save those kids in the church. Another way how Johnny shows that he is a ‘’hero’’ is, “You really killed him, huh, Johnny?’’ ‘’Yeah.’’ His voice quavered slightly. “I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you. And they had a blade . . . they were gonna beat me up. . . .” Page.57. This quote shows Johnny being a ‘’hero’’. Johnny defended his friend before the group wanted to drown Ponyboy. Johnny took out his switchblade and killed Bob. The last example is “Leave her alone, dally.” Huh?” Dally was taken off guard. He stared at Johnny in disbelief. Johnny couldn’t say “Boo” to a goose. Johnny gulped and got a little pale, but he said, “You heard me. Leave her alone.” This quote relates to how Johnny is brave because Johnny is always afraid to stand up for himself but he was brave enough to fight back and stand up for Cherry because Dally kept annoying Cherry and she
In anger and in fear he stopped Bob from hurting Pony(56), that left him with a feeling that distressed him greatly. He says to Pony, “Shut up about last night! I killed a kid last night…. How’d you like to live with that”(74)? This eats away at Johnny and makes him cry- “it took alot to make Johnny cry”(4). When Pony and Johnny go on the run because Johnny killed Bob, they leave everything behind and only stay in touch with Johnny’s hero, Dally. It hurt Johnny even more when Dallas had told him his parents had not asked about him after he ran away(88). He decided to turn himself in and stop running when he saw that it did more harm than good. Johnnycake knew that it wasn’t fair for Pony to be away from his family. On their way back to the church they see that it had caught on fire. Pony and Johnny knew that they had probably started the fire and ran in the church to try and save the children stuck inside. They rushed to get the kids out of the church window as embers fell on them. Though they go through these hard times they end up being heroes when they save the children and learn quite a few things.
Ponyboy said he would be dead if he didn't have the gang members. Johnny is the youngest in the gang. He was jumped by Socs and was seriously injured that he almost died. He had psychology impact on the Socs, he would shiver and be frighten whenever he sees a Soc. On the day he left with Ponyboy, they met a group of Socs. Since the Soc called Bob almost drowned Ponyboy to death, he killed Bob. Johnny admired Dally a lot. He wishes Dally could be proud of him for even just once. He wanted to be as tough and cool as Dally but he never succeeds. Johnny was kicked out of school and that was how Ponyboy thought he wasn't clever. Sometimes Johnny understood things better than Ponyboy in the book which was called Gone with the Wind. Johnny had the interest and talent in reading books but no one in the gang except Ponyboy was good enough to talk about these. He wasn't really close with Ponyboy before they ran away together so they didn't have a talk. Johnny also loved to watch sunsets and sunrises but no one in the gang could have spared time to watch or even talk about this. All Johnny couldn't express mad him alienated from the gang members. The only one he was close to was Dally. Dally cared for his all time and would risk his life for whatever happens on Johnny. Such as lending a gun or killing a Soc. Dally wouldn't hesitate as long as it was for
To begin with, Johnny stabs Bob, the Soc, with his switchblade because Bob was about to brutally beat Johnny up with his rings on his bare hands and his hurtful words from his crude, deceptive mouth. Johnny also stabs Bob because Bob’s gang was trying to drown Ponyboy, so if he was able to stab Bob then his nasty and cruel gang would leave Ponyboy alone. When Johnny stabs Bob, his plan ends up working and the other socs runaway because they got frightened at the sight of Johnny stabbing and killing their what used to be alive friend. “ I killed him, he said slowly. I killed that boy. (56)” Johnny says this to Ponyboy as he awakens; coughing up water from nearly being drowned by Bob’s gang. When the socs runaway they go and try to find police. Because of this, Johnny and Ponyboy now have to run away in order for them not to be caught and punished by
Johnny comes across as weak and powerless in the beginning of the story, but as his character develops in the story, he shows his heroism by speaking up for people who are helpless and in need. “He started to put his arm around her, but Johnny reached over and stopped him.
After Johnny’s fight with the Socs in the park he utters, “‘I killed that boy … I had to’” (57). This is Johnny’s worst nightmare, he could never imagine being beat up by the Socs again. Johnny never stands up to others but it seems like second nature for him to save one of his “brothers”. While Johnny is in the hospital he exclaims, “Listen, I don't mind dying now. It's worth it.
Johnny said, “‘I killed him ... killed that boy,’” (56). Johnny was explaining to Ponyboy that he was nervous and killed Bob in an anxious manner. Bob was trying to kill Ponyboy by drowning him, so after Johnny he had fought for himself, he took his knife to Bob. Johnny protected Ponyboy by killing someone, he was loyal to his friend. Ponyboy learned in this situation that loyalty doesn't really have a limit, or that his family would go great heights to protect him.
They learn from the mistakes they have made, and on occasion, will not act like you expect them too. It is proven time and time again that Johnny is a complex character. One such exhibit is when a british soldier tries to commandeer the boy’s horse. Johnny, normally being a rather rash and arrogant character does not immediately erupt in a fury hurricane of rage at the soldiers nerve. Instead he formulates a plan that causes the soldier to become disinterested in Johnny’s magnificent stead.
Brave is used to describe Johnny due to the fact he protected himself and ponyboy when a group of Socs literally tried to attack them in a subtle way. Also, Johnny spared his life to help the kids out of the burning church resulting in fatal burns on his face and generally safe kids in a subtle way. Earlier in the story, Johnny stands up to his idol asking him to stop harassing the girls they literally met at the movies. Bravery can also be used to describe how Johnny can generally be beat down and still get back up in a pretty major way.
A piece of evidence that shows Johnny’s strength is, “Johnny yelled, ‘Shut up! We’re going to get you out!”’(Hinton 92). This is after Johnny kills the soc, and Johnny and Ponyboy are hiding out in the church. When they return to find the church on fire, they run in a save the kids that are in the church. In the fire Johnny gets hit in the back with a piece of wood, and he is then hospitalized. Sadly while he is the hospital, the gang realizes he is gonna pass. So when the greasers win the rumble, the big fight between the greasers and socs, Ponyboy goes to see Johnny. Since Johnny knows he is dying, he says, “Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold”(Hinton 148). While Johnny and Ponyboy were hiding in the church, they watched a sunset. Johnny thought the sky was so pretty and he wished it could stay like that forever. So, Ponyboy recites a poem about how nothing gold/perfect can stay. When Johnny is dying he says this to Ponyboy in regards to Ponyboy’s sensitive side. Johnny and Ponyboy understand each other so well because they are the only very emotional guys in the gang. Johnny does not want Ponyboy to lose his sensitive side just because he is the only very emotional guy in the gang. Finally Johnny becomes more outgoing. In the fire Ponyboy describes his attitude as, “He wasn’t scared either. That was the only time I can think of when i saw him without that defeated, suspicious look in his eyes”(Hinton 92). Johnny’s
Throughout the whole book the biggest scene of bravery is when Johnny and Pb went into the burning church to save some kids on a field trip that were stuck in there. Ponyboy says “that was the only time I have saw him without a defeated, suspicious look in his eyes. He looked like he was having the time of his life” (page 93). Johnny saved his life for kids he has never met before, this is something that old sensitive Johnny would have never done. Finally Johnny says “ for once just leave me alone (page 122). Johnny is talking to his mother when she comes to visit Johnny in the hospital. Not only is he paying back his parents for abusing him but he's doing it without even thinking. He's so fed up with them he just wants to be around the people that have been there for him and took care of
Johnny’s heroism doesn’t show in the beginning of the story, but as the story progresses Johnny shows emotionally strong actions and kindness. While Johnny and Ponyboy were at a drive-in, Dally was harassing a Soc girl named Cherry. As this occurred Johnny was uncomfortable with this and asked Dally to stop. When Dally didn’t stop, Johnny rose from his seat and shouted, “Leave her alone, Dally” (Hinton 24). In other words, Johnny ordered Dally to stop. It is important to note that it took a lot of courage to say this. The last time we heard something like this was with the store clerk and he got belted. This showed real courage because Johnny is the scared one and he was the only one who said this to Dally out of all the greasers.
In the book Johnny shows he is golden because he is very caring, he was a very helpful and supporting friend and hero to all. Even though he might have killed a soc, he did it to protect those he loves. Johnny reveals that he is selfless when he pushes Ponyboy out of the church risking his own life. When Johnny and Ponyboy go into the burning church to save the kids, the church starts to crumble and Johnny “shoved me towards the window. ‘Get out”’(93) he said.
Johnny didn’t have much of an option and even though his decision wasn’t the best, it could’ve ended with Pony being drowned. It may seem that they probably wouldn’t have helped if they weren’t involved, but that’s not true. Not everyone may be brave enough to do something, that’s true, but it’s whether they decide to do it or not that justifies if they are truly a hero. Being a hero can include the act of bravery, courage, and honesty, and they don’t just do something just to do it. Also, it’s true that Johnny and Ponyboy, from “The Outsiders”, had primarily something to do with the cause, but it all started with saving someone, so in that case it was only self-defense. Obviously, Johnny wouldn’t hurt someone on purpose, but someone wouldn’t just pop out of nowhere, so he took matters into his own hands. As a result, it has been stated that even the poorest people or even the ones who look cold hearted can help out others in need, and shouldn’t just be considered
