By the time he was fourteen years old, he had learned all his school would offer, and soon, after studying at a private school in Kentucky then Ohio, he completed his high school education. (Gaines, 2009) Despite this, according to Grant, his childhood was “uneventful”. He did what most frontier children would do: go to school, do chores, ice skate, fish, and ride horses. He also hated his father’s tannery and its stench, but he showed an unparalleled talent for working with horses, so his father allowed Grant to earn his keep that way. (PBS, 2013) He bought his first horse at the age of nine using money he had earned hauling wood, and he would train horses for other farms as a teenager. (Alter, 2002) After being forced by his father at seventeen, Grant was forced to attend West Point Military Academy, where he discovered his name was not listed as a new cadet, with only a U.S. Grant being on the list, so not wanting to risk rejection, he changed his name to Ulysses S. Hiram Ulysses Grant was born on April 27, 1822, in Point Pleasant, Ohio. Born into a middle class family, he was the first son of Jesse Root Grant, a tanner and businessman, and Hannah Simpson Grant. In the front parlor of Wilmer McLean’s home in Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, effectively ending the American Civil War (1861-65). The South’s dominating strategy in winning the civil war was attrition. They believed they could wear down the political will of the North if they held out long enough to make the Northerners tired and question value of the means to achieve the ends. Military stalemates, guerilla war tactics and inconclusive battles would help the South achieve this goal. “Confederate armies did not have to invade and conquer the North: they needed only to hold out long enough to force the North to the conclusion that the price of conquering the South and annihilating its armies was too high, as Britain had concluded in 1781 and as the United States concluded…” (Why Did the Confederacy Lose?, pg 117)The South really enjoyed McClellan’s performance in the Southern theatre with his tendency to retreat when he could have won. This was another helpful hand the South would need to cause attrition. In response, Lincoln knew he had to do two things to prevent attrition and win the war more quickly. He needed to fire McClellan, and shift the theme of the war in the view of the North so that it would not lose its thunder. He did this by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation and converting the war for unionism into the war for morality. The

There weren’t fresh troops to keep on fighting. The Confederacy ran away but the Union followed. Finally, Lee, on April 9, 1865 sent a letter to Grant telling him that he would surrender his army. They met at the Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia where Lee and Grant shook hands for the surrender of Lee.
The American Revolution was when the British colonies in America revolted against British rule for being taxed by people not even living on their land and gained independence by overthrowing British imperial rule under King George III. The French Revolution was a period of social and political upheaval in France, marking the decline of powerful monarchies and churches and the rise of democracy and nationalism. The French Revolution began less than two decades after the American Revolution. In many ways, the American experience was an inspiration for the citizens of France. But the people of the two countries had different situations and had different concerns, which influenced the way each revolution began, progressed, and ended.
Unity within colonies was extremely strong because it was assembled in a primal urge for survival. The colonists were in this entirely new land, so it was natural they would stick together to the familiar, and therefore build strong bonds and loyalty to their colony. Exclusion also excellently describes early America because of the way colonies expelled their own people if they did not follow the colony's strict rules' of life. The primary source documents; "City upon a Hill", "Ann Hutchinson's Trial", "Founding Of The Iroquois League", and "The Mayflower Compact" are all brilliant examples of this contradictory yet surprisingly honest view of early American history. Early American History should be remembered as
