The meaning of irony is “saying one thing and meaning another.” Biblical scholar Muecke provides more specific description on irony base on three features: • For him Irony is a “double layered or two storey phenomenon.” It means it has two meanings: deeper meaning and lower meaning. He notices that always lower level is the victim of the irony. • He finds clash between deeper meaning and lower meaning which he calls “some kind of opposition.” • The lower level is always victim and unaware of contrasting level which he calls “innocent.” Muecke’s “two storey phenomenon” is very useful to analyze irony in the Fourth Gospel. The “two storey phenomenon” is a literary structure. It implies two levels of meaning: the deeper level and the surface …show more content…
For him verbal irony is a character says one thing but means another. For example John 3:4 “Nicodemus said to him, how can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?” This is Nicodemus ironic response to Jesus. He does not mean that he wants to go back into his mother’s womb and be born again. For Muecke situational irony is involve a character in the story not aware of being ironic and acts just opposite what is expected him/her because of lack of certain knowledge or information. For example John 11: 50, “You do not understand that it is better for you to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation destroyed.” Here Caiaphas is trying to persuade the council to condemn Jesus. He suggests that Jesus should die for the people. It is true what he (Caiaphas) says even though he does not mean it. Another form of situational irony is dramatic irony. The dramatic irony is a literary device. In the dramatic irony the audience knows the character better than the character. Because narrator proves more information to readers about the character but the character does not know. It implies that the words in the narrative have significant meaning for the reader than for the …show more content…
In this irony the author and the readers share some knowledge or perceptions because the narrator provides secret information or explanations to the readers to develop dramatic irony. The victim is not given the piece of information. Ironically Nicodemus says, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God” (3:1-2). Readers know that Nicodemus is the one to whom Jesus would not entrust himself. Nicodemus without knowing disclose that he has inadequate faith in Jesus. In this situation Nicodemus become victim of the
Although irony may be associated with negative events or actions, it can also be a sign of good for characters within stories. According to Dictionary.com, irony in literature is defined as “a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.” The use of irony is found within the novel The Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini. Hosseini uses irony to portray and develop the main dynamic character in this story, Amir. Most of the major events Amir is faced with at a younger age seemingly come full circle when he reaches adulthood. Irony plays a role as Amir lives through tragic events that ultimately teach him how to become a better person.
"Irony is a device that protects him (the artist) from the pain of his experience so that he may use it objectively in his art(Susquehanna. "New Critical")." In The Glass Menagerie, it is ironic how Tom speaks badly of his father and his leaving home but in the end he leaves home just like his father, the man "in love with long distances (Williams 30)''. The fact that Amanda wants what is best for her children is ironic because she worries so much over it that she doesn't realize what is best for them.
Irony, a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result. Throughout Night there is use of situational and verbal irony. This use of irony keeps the reader interested. The use of irony causes the reader to know things that the characters often are not aware of.
Irony is when you say one thing, yet mean another. This is a very popular device that writers use when creating satire and often used when exploring more momentous topics. Popular writer Mark Twain who is well-known for his effective use of satire often uses irony in his very prevailing yet controversial novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In this historic novel Mark Twain uses irony to mock slavery and the society surrounding it. An example from the novel is when Huck throws salt over his left shoulder in the hopes to ward off back luck. This is ironic because previously to Huck throwing salt over his shoulder he was mocking Tom Sawyer for his ridiculous beliefs yet he believes throwing salt will get rid of any bad mojo. Twain's use of irony not only is criticizing Huck for that but also the whole society during this time, many individuals in this novel have controversial beliefs and somewhat go against their own. Jonathan Swift a very famous satirist and essayist exceedingly known for “Gulliver’s Travels” and “ A Modest Proposal” also uses irony along with Mark Twain. Irony permeates through Swifts legendary essay “ A Modest Proposal”. This essay has to do with overpopulation in Ireland and in Jonathan Swift words “ For preventing the children of poor people in Ireland, from being a burden on their parents or country, and for making them beneficial to the publick.”. Swift mocks this idea and completely blows it out of proportion by basically saying let's fatten these children up, eat the children, or we could just put them on the market. Although Swift has amazing examples of irony throughout his
Situational irony involves a discrepancy between what is expected to happen and what actually happens. One of the best examples of situational irony is when Jareth said to Hoggle “don't lose your head” right before Sarah entered the forest with the fiery creatures, because the audience expects the fiery creatures to take off Hoggles head but they actually try to take Sarah’s head. In addition, another example of situational irony is when Jareth gives Sarah another chance to get her brother back. This is an example of situational irony because the audience expects Jareth to take the baby and be done but he allows Sarah a chance to reclaim her

Irony is, among many other reasons, problematic in the sense that it is both hard to define as well as sometimes hard to understand. Even the most critical and experienced of readers have missed instances of irony at times, and even more so ordinary readers.
You know when you’re reading a book or watching a book and something happens where some characters don’t really know what happening, but you do? That’s dramatic irony. Dramatic irony is used in stories so the audience or readers know more than the characters. It’s also used to create emotions and is used to show how misunderstandings can have a big impact. The meaning of dramatic irony is that in speeches or a situation of a drama is understood by the audience but not understood by the characters in the play.
Irony is used to convey a message that has the opposite meaning of its actual meaning, differentiating the appearance of things and reality. There is different types of irony as well: verbal, situational, and dramatic. Personally, once a friend of mine was walking with me on the bike path and tripped over a rock, falling to the ground. I instantaneously burst into laughter, instead of helping her up or even asking if she was okay. Why would this be ironic many may ask? Not even five minutes after this happened, I tripped (I am pretty sure there was nothing there for me to trip over) an fell to the ground.
Irony has been a staple in literature centuries before Hawthorne’s time and continues to work centuries later in today’s writing. The first

Irony has several different types and it appears not only in literature, but in ordinary life also. It is a contradiction between appearance and reality. Irony is a widely known method of explaining something, and is popular to use as in writing and in everyday life so in media. It points on how many different people don’t pay attention to what is happening around them, and how many ironic games our fate can play with us. It is not only when we don’t mention, but it can happen every day and any time with anyone.
