Introduction: Does the size of a county’s population have any correlation to the number of individuals that are incarcerated within that county? Every year data is collected through the Annual Survey of Jails (AJS) that provides information on the characteristics and make-up of the Nation’s jails and inmates housed in these jails. The Offender Profile is another method of collection for the state of Missouri, reporting important statistics about the offenders supervised by the Missouri Department of Corrections. With this information, along with the county’s census information on population estimates, we are able to conduct a regression analysis to test the hypothesis. Data Collection: The Missouri Department of Corrections has provided a portable document format (pdf), on their website available to the public that provides a multitude of information on their local counties as well as the characteristics of the local county jails: www.doc.mo.gov/Documents/publications/OffenderProfile2013.pdf. After sorting through this one hundred and twenty-page document, I found the information I was looking for, on page nine of this file was a list of one hundred and twelve counties and their rank, prison population, population estimate, and incarceration rate per 100,000. I converted this pdf page into excel and was able to utilize the information in an easier method. Since there was only a requirement for thirty data sets, I needed to make an unbiased selection to the information. With the data already converted into an excel format I was able to run an excel formula (=RANDBETWEEN 1,112), and excel randomly assigned numbers to each county. I then sorted the counties by newly, unbiased assigned number in numerical order, and highlighted the top thirty rows. I copied this data over and used it in my scatterplots, (raw data provided in appendix).

According to statistical data found in the Bureau for Justice Records, there are a number of problems that most prisons in the country face. The records indicate that the number of adult federal and state inmates increased from `139% in `1980 to 260% (Walker, 1999). As a natural default, the United States of America has the highest incarceration rate in the world. This in itself brings about one of the major problems that are faced in modern incarceration which is overcrowding in most prison facilities. The number of offenders in the country has increased rapidly over time while the country prison system has not really been able to cope with this rapid increase. Prisons intended for one or two inmates are now crowded with more than fifty individuals. Because of this most prisons are overcrowded and most of the facilities available are unable to cater for the needs of all the prisoners (Siegel, 2009).
The book explores the effect of mass incarceration on low-income areas, poverty places, and poor demographics. It explains that the high incarceration has a direct correlation to social problems of individuals that happen within these communities. It shows statistics of these poverty places having an increase in percentage of being sent to prison. I plan to use this in my research by providing the audience information on how individuals and citizens of communities
Current trends show that incarceration numbers continue to grow higher each year. The United States rate of incarceration is the leading nation in rates of incarceration. Other countries have much lower percentages than the U.S. does. There a implications because of inmates reentering the prison system within three years after being released. In 1994 51.8% of inmates that had been released were back in the prison system (U.S. prison populations: Trends and implications, n.d.). Other implications
As of December 2013, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the number of incarcerated males age 20-24 was 39,000 white males, 40,100 Hispanic males, and 68,400 black males (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2013). This paper will focus on why such racial disparities exist in the U.S. prison population. Research on prison sentencing can identify if there is discrimination in sentencing and imprisonment; however it is geographically limited to studying “hot spots”. Also the methodology and factors considered may be different.

Legal empirical researchers are using statistical analysis to categorize crime data. Combining both data and legal analysis, this concept led to a new movement of a development of law. Statistics show there are 2.3 million incarcerated in correctional facilities in the United States. At the State and Federal prison systems, one in five prisoners is incarcerated for a drug offense (Peter Wagner). Maryland has more than 20,000 inmates, 58% were for nonviolent offenses, costing the state close to 1 billion dollars per year. On average one inmate costs the state over 37,000 dollars
To perform this research I had increased my knowledge based off of primary and secondary information. This range of research examines the majority of inmates sentenced within Arizona’s prison population, along with the reasons as to why overpopulation occurs in prisons.

As we all know – there are tons of social issues within the entire world that Criminal Justice Practitioners deal with, most likely, on a daily basis. One of the many social issues I’ve chosen is Prison Overcrowding.
This helped to have more concise data. Also, incarceration rate is measured per 100,000 people, taking into account the population for each state. The same is true for the violent crime rate, as it also was measured per 100,000 people. Since both of these variables measured for population, this was another control variable included in the research.The incarceration rate, crime rate, and population of the states do not need to be operationalized, as they are already quantitative data. To operationalize whether or not a state elects or appoints trial judges, we gave each option a specific number. For example, if a state elects their trial judges, the state was given a one. These states include: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin (30 in total). If the state appoints a judge, the state was given a zero. These states include: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and Wyoming (20 total). When compared, Rutherford, Clay, and Henderson counties all have some similar shortcomings in the form of Social Services provided as shown in table 5. For instance, all three counties are severely lacking in Female Offender Services, Day Reporting Services, and Reentry Services.
