I . Animal captivity is common in many zoos and aquariums worldwide. It has been going on for more than 50 years and many people enjoy watching it but it needs to end right away. Animals captivity is when they take a healthy animal from the wild and put them in bad conditions that tend to make them die faster. There has been a lot of deaths of animals and people from animals in captivity because they got taken away from their homes, and they aren’t used to being touched or screamed at to do something which they don't do it the wild. Cruelty towards animals in captivity can be reduced if animals could no longer be in captivity. Zoos are where animals are kept for people entertainment or for studies. If there's more animals than they are going to get treated worse because then there will be to many animals to take care of. Some zoos have already started this but all of the zoos need too because it keeps other animals that could be bred safe. “ SeaWorld has said, when the act SB 839 takes effect, all zoos and aquariums can keep their current orcas and animals they have and use them for only educational purposes.” (Beck 5). Animals when they breed make more animals so they would have to suffer what had happened to the parents of the animals. Also sometimes the baby that the animals could have had could have died fasted because of the chemicals they put in the water. Since the body's smaller than the chemicals go faster through their body and they die faster than what would happen in the wild. Also another way to help animal captivity is some zoos keep animals that are injured but that should be the only thing that zoos can keep. Yes, some animals can't go back in the wild but they should stay in captivity but you shouldn't keep fully health animals in captivity because they die faster. Some animals get hurt in the wild but they should only be in captivity. They shouldn't have animals that are just for entertainment in captivity they should be there for a good reason not something like
Do you think it is good to keep animals in captivity? I do, here’s why. Here is my opinion on this topic which will be explained farther into the essay. We should keep animals in captivity because the zoo is a great way for urban citizens to see wildlife on a tight budget, a great way of income for some city run zoos, and a great way of entertainment.
The issue on whether or not to keep animals in captivity has been debated heavily for a long time. With species such as the panda on the verge of extinction to mistreatment of marine mammals in theme parks such as Sea World, keeping wild animals under the care of humans has been a struggle and a highly controversial topic. Even though many people believe that animals should not be kept in captivity because humans are incapable of fully understanding and providing specific needs for wild animals, certain animals can be kept happy and healthy in captivity, and these animals are an important educational tool for teaching people of all ages about biology, biodiversity, and the ecosystems of the world.
By discussing and comparing how animal captivity has affected these endangered animals clarity can be gained as to what is successful, what needs improvement and what is detrimental to certain species when it comes to captivity
Should animals in Captivity be allowed? Animals in Captivity should be allowed because they get the medicine they need, animals can live longer, and the animals can get smarter. The first reason animals in captivity should be allowed is that animals can get healthy. There are rehabilitation programs that nurse animals back to health.Veterinarians can prevent and control a disease. Second, animals can live longer in captivity. In the article, by Hannah J. O’regan and Andrew C. Kitchener states, “Gorillas live for more than 50 years in captivity compared to 35 years in the wild” (223). The animals diets also help them live longer. Lastly animals can get smarter. Animals in captivity do more activities making them smarter. For example, “Rats raised in enriched environments had larger brains”(O’regan and Kitchener 224). Animals in captivity should be allowed because they are able to get healthier, their lifespan increases, and they get more intelligent.
“Before the early twentieth century, zoos would separate humans from the animals by using a series of moats. In the early 1900s, however, zoos “began displaying animals in realistic exhibits that mimicked actual habitats” (Gioielli, 2016, p. 1). Coupled with the more natural habitat is advancing care for the animals in captivity. More hospitals are being built for animals and better medicine is being created constantly. As a result of healthier and happier animals in increased popularity of animals in captivity. According to Carey (2016), “More than 10,000 zoos are now in operation worldwide . . . the central missions of zoos [are] not only to serve as attractions for recreation and amusement, but also to educate people and promote conservation . . .” (p. 2). Most people do not go to see animals in captivity for the sole purpose of entertainment, they also go to learn about the animals themselves. Both children and adults can learn about how to help protect endangered animals and their habitats. As a result, zoos and aquariums are continually gaining popularity. According to Gazert (2017), “Zoos and aquariums draw 181 million visitors per year in the United States--that’s over half the country’s population, and more visitors than the annual attendance of the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB games combined” (p. 2). Unfortunately, some zoos and aquariums have been known to abuse their animals. While this is not true of all zoos, but the reports of abuse have increased leading to more controversy. Because of this the idea of keeping animals in captive is harder to accept. Still, the sad truth is that animals may have to be in captivity in order to save their species. “A recent report from the World Wildlife Fund warned that without swift and substantial human intervention, over two-thirds of the world’s wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade” (Ganzert, 2017, p. 1). Predictions
Freedom is everything to people, and animals alike. But animals in captivity are stripped from this. In SeaWorld and circuses, the animals are living their lives entertaining people and living their lives in cages or small enclosed pens. By keeping animals to remain in captivity people are taking away their freedom, forcing them to be used for entertainment, and not providing animals with the proper care.
Animal captivity has been an ongoing debate for over 60 years. There should be no question about whether animal captivity is wrong. “Hundreds of thousands of wild animals across the world are snatched from natural habitats, forced into captivity and subjected to abuse, both mentally and physically, in the name of entertainment and profit.” (World Animal Protection 1) Places such as the circus use abusive training methods such as, hooks, chains, whips, electric rods, and blunt instruments. (Born Free USA 1) Animals deserve to live freely in the wild. Their freedom is taken away the moment they are put in a cage. When animals are brought into
Although keeping animals in captivity is bad because they don't get to be themselves they should keep animals in zoos or captivity because it helps the species not go extinct, it brings happiness to families that go to the zoo, and zoos bring in enough money to build better exhibits. Even though zoos still have negative impacts on animals lives they should still keep animals in
To argue against the use of animal captivity I will use Utilitarian, Peter Singer, who wrote an essay named ‘All Animals are Equal.’ Within this, Singer argues that humans are animals but language makes us forget this. Conventions and attitudes that we find hard to drop move us away from the idea that humans and non-humans are both equal and that we should not treat animals like they are any different to us. Singer wants a liberal rights movement for the rights of animals. This has to be about interests and the amount of pleasure or pain we feel. Furthermore, Utilitarian John Stuart Mill can also be used as an argument against animal captivity. He argues for the minimizing of suffering and pain and maximizing of pleasure and happiness of all interested parties. Including that of
The topic of the treatment of captive animals in both zoos and aquariums is one of high controversy. It is argued that the capturing and breeding of wildlife, holding them in captivity may present them with unnecessary risks. This however is dependent on the species of animal.
Animals raised in captivity are the most unfortunate of all. They go through grave conditions with no chance of survival. Over 3000 animals die per second due to slaughter. Over 56 billion die because of slaughter per year (www.animalequality.net/food). The consternation behind the walls of slaughterhouses will leave you dumbfounded. The way animals are treated is atrocious. Animals raised in captivity are treated bestially from the time their born to the time they die.
Keeping them in captivity can harm just as much as it can help. It is our responsibility as the dominant species to determine the consequences of our actions.Often times animals that live in zoos are treated as if they are human. I must consider both sides of the argument and have valid reasons for supporting both. An increasing number of species are on the verge extinction, and sometimes the only way to ensure their survival is captive breeding programs. They are monitored and given prenatal and medical care to ensure healthy offspring that can be later reintroduced back into the wild
The zoo is packed with children, running everywhere. They laugh and smile as they watch the animals at the zoo sleep. What these children do not realize is that these animals are dying on the inside. Animals that live at the zoo are extremely depressed. These animals can suffer severe psychological disorders from being out of their natural environment. But others argue that keeping these animals in captivity will help keep endangered species alive. However, the disadvantages of keeping animals in captivity are becoming more and more serious, and more people are beginning to believe that animals should not be held captive. Animals should not be kept in captivity because of the negative impact it can have
Animals in Captivity Everyday people go to zoos with intentions of having a good time without realizing they are paying for animals to be held in captivity for the rest of their lives. In recent discussion, the decision to keep animals in captivity is a very controversial topic. Many people are towards the decision that zookeepers should keep the wild animals captive for the entertainment of others, while on the contrary many are against it. However nobody has done anything to get the animals out. The people who are against setting them free believe that the animals are living a much better life than they would outside and that they are better for keeping entertainment for the public but what they do not see is what happens when the zoo is closed and how they are treated outside of the public's eye, which is what the people who are against it tend to see.
Thesis: All zoos should be overhauled and replaced with free-range territories or back into the wild to help these animals avoid the detrimental effects that zoo’s cause on their health and to stop teaching people that is okay to imprison these animals.
