The Meaning of Love Love has many different meanings to different people. For a child, love is what he or she feels for his mommy and daddy. To teenage boy, love is what he should feel for his girlfriend of the moment, only because she says she loves him. But as we get older and "wiser," love becomes more and more confusing. Along with poets and philosophers, people have been trying to answer that age-old question for centuries: What is love? One definition of love in The Merriam-Webster dictionary is "attraction based on sexual desire" (439). Some people believe that love and sex are one in the same. If two people are in love, they should be having sex. And, on the flipside, if two people are having sex, they must be in …show more content…
This passage obviously alludes to sex, but sex is not completely necessary when there is love. The speaker in Sharon Olds' "Sex without Love" asks, "How do they do it, the ones who make love / without love?" (1-2). Love is deeper and more meaningful than just physical or sexual attraction. Love is a feeling--an emotion. Love is also defined in the dictionary as "strong affection," "warm attachment," and "unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for others" (439). All of these definitions are completely correct, but the dictionary does not explain how it feels to love someone. The reason that an explanation for this feeling is not found in the dictionary may be because love is so different for each individual person. In my experience, "strong affection" does not even begin to cover the sensation and emotions a person feels when he or she is in love. Love is compared to "the extraordinary sun / splashing its light / into astonished trees" in Denise Levertov's "Love Poem" (2-4). Like the sun, love is great and bright and fills a person with extreme joy. Love is greater than anything else a person could ever experience. A lover can even be better than a summer's day, as the speaker in Shakespeare's poem suggests. He compares his lover to a summer's day by saying that she is "more
Have you ever felt the feeling of butterflies in your stomach or heard the phrase “my heart skipped a beat for you”? Many important decisions we make in our life has to do with what our feelings show us. Love is an important matter in our life because it motivates us in different ways. How does one define the word “love”, and what exactly is it? Is it merely a fleeting feeling, or is it something more spiritual in nature? Perhaps it has several different meanings, depending on one’s own personal perception and experiences. My own perception is that “love” in itself is an essence that almost all life on Earth harbors, and it is also something that all life has the capability of expressing. Although, the above statement may be too much of an optimistic statement, for the reason that there are individuals in this world who seem completely devoid of love, empathy, and compassion. Completely devoid of what makes a human – human. Despite this very fact, and despite the many harsh cruelties of humanity and society; goodness, love, and light will always prevail and cast out any darkness, violence, and hate. This leads me to believe that love is a pivotal element for the good in humanity, and that “love” in itself is more than meets the eye.
By definition; love is a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person. Love can be interrupted in many ways. Were we ever taught love or is it just a natural feeling towards a person? Love is a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person (Dictionary 1). Love is what is known as the “universal language”. There are so many ways love can be interpreted. The central message that the comfort humans receive, and the shyness they feel for an individual are compartments of love that may not always be touched on in poetry.
Love throughout the years has been interpreted as an intense interpersonal attraction ("I love my partner"). Love can also refer specifically to the passionate desire and intimacy of romantic love, to the emotional closeness of familial love, or to the platonic love that defines friendship, to the profound union or devotion of religious love. Love had been defined by individuals to get close to someone who have actual feelings for or deeply care about, and one that you will actually risk your life for. But now, love has been given a bad reputation because now some people are only interested in having non-intimate sex with others. People prefer temporary relationships, instead of dedicating their lives to their loved ones. These types of

Like I mentioned in the paragraph above love is usually defined as an intensive feeling of a deep romantic or sexual attachment to someone, however love is a bit more complicated than that. Love is special, it’s unique in it’s attitude and behavioral components, it’s a phenomenon that eludes easy definition (Our Sexuality, 2012). Love has always been a complicated subject; sometimes love is fickle, sometimes love isn’t love, but rather pure infatuation. Infatuation is often mistaken for love, however it is only a short lived but intense passion for someone.
