Seagull Handbook the three most effective reading strategies are analyze, evaluate, and formulate. Analyzing is one effective reading strategy a reader can use. This method is most effective by thinking about the writer’s arranged ideas. For example, viewing the developed topics and the structure of the paragraph is a way of analyzing. Annotating is beneficial to the reader who is analyzing the text. When using annotating, a reader

Summarizing is one of the most efficient ways to formulate. Summarizing gives the reader a better understanding of the text. To illustrate when summarizing, the reader should restate the text’s main idea to show the relationship and understand what the text is saying. Jotting down brief notes about the reader’s initial reaction can help to prepare for a more detailed summary. Formulating strategy can be used to support what the reader went over in the text.

The writing handbook I use is The Little Seagull Handbook. The specific area I see myself making the most mistakes with punctuation is comma splices. Sometimes I place commas in sentences where I think they are supposed to be, but really they are not. I think punctuation is probably the most common mistake I make when writing a paper. I changed my second goal to providing more details and examples in my writing. I thought I expanded pretty well on important specifics in my papers, but I noticed there are still some parts where I do not provide sufficient detailed information. An example of this would be not providing enough details on my goals I make; I am striving to meet this goal by the end of the course. The way I see myself determining

Students will learn sequencing and reading comprehension of nonfiction pieces of work. To cover this standard the student will need
Introduction: Ways of Reading can be difficult to understand at times, but if you break it down it becomes easier to understand. Some of the quotes written by David Bartholomae and Anthony Petrosky can be used to look at the greater picture and do not just apply to reading and writing. Three quotes really stuck out to me while I was reading the introduction of this book. It was not just because they were great advice on reading and writing, but because they can also be applied to everyday life or certain situations in life. There are lessons to be learned in this introduction such as challenging others and students, understanding that there are different interpretations of things, and finding the meaning as you go along.
Strategic readers monitor their thinking and recognize when errors are committed but they also know what strategy to use to correct the error. For example, they may need to reread the text to make sense, use context clues to understand unfamiliar words. No matter what the obstacle is, a fix-up strategy is applied. The K-W-L is a well- known teaching technique to assist in the monitoring strategy. The K-W-L chart provides the teacher and students opportunity to participate in discussions before, during, and after reading. It helps the student to ask and answer questions, identify the main idea and detail, and summarize the text (Santoro, Baker, Fien, Smith, and Chard, 2016 p. 284).
Essential Question(s): What words signal the reader to go beyond what 's written to what is implied in the text? How do readers infer the meaning of unknown words? How do readers determine the main idea when it is inferred? How do readers use text clues to make inferences in an assessment passage? How can inferring and summarizing help readers identify the main idea and relevant details?
The book is written in an easy to understand form. Someone with little to no
Students are asked first to read the reading passages provided within the textbook. Then, they analyze the passage to underline, highlight, or select the most important information. This can also be through the use of paraphrasing (summarizing) each paragraph and/or applying the KWL(S) reading approach after reading. Afterwards, students will need to find ways to relate what they have learned from the text to their lives in order to connect to the readings and comprehend what they have read.
In the 4th chapter of Writing Today, titled Summaries, it teaches the reader how to properly summarize a topic. Knowing the main points of the topic will help you, the writer, to better convey the main points of your summary. In this chapter, it explains the steps of how to analyze a topic and rewrite it in your own thoughts. Reading the text multiple times will help you get a better understanding, taking notes of key topics or words will help when you are writing the summary. (P44-45) Doing so will help with accuracy and keep the summary focused on the topics of significance. Fully understanding the original writing will give you an idea on more than just the author’s main argument, but also on the tone and how the text is structured. There
When it comes to finding the best way to read a text, one might think that all you have to do is read through the entire text. There is not a best way to approaching a text, but rather there is a best way to approach the text for the individual. How a person understand something depends on how they try to approach it first.
4. Provide a combination of theory and practice; i.e., a theory from the text and then follow-up with your thoughts and ideas; or vice versa.
In Mrs. Haigh’s English class, Jacey received a short story to read and write a paper summarizing it. The short story was called “Regret”. ¬¬¬¬ Jacey reads for meaning which allowed her to comprehend the content of the story better. When someone reads for meaning, the characters stand out since so much emphasis is placed upon them; this made the story able to be grasped better and also quicker. It was evident that the material was understood better since an outline was done and the entire story was summarized. Both of those strategies are done by readers who read for meaning since they make the material even easier to comprehend. Reading for meaning improves how the reader comprehends and how the reader reacts to the
In the end I will summarize my understanding in my own words, this helps me review and critical thinking.
During reading strategies are extremely helpful to me while reading my novel. I find asking questions help me better understand the novel better. For example on page 130 Miles and Alaska are playing Truth or Dare and Alaska dares Miles to “hook up” with her; and he does exactly that. I asked myself why Alaska does these things even though she has a boyfriend. This helped me understand that Alaska is an attention seeker so she does these type of things when she does have any attention from anyone. Since her boyfriend wasn't there she needed affection from someone else. This helped me understand the reason behind some of the things Alaska does. Another during reading strategy that I used was inferring. Inferring is a great strategy to use. For
First summarizing. Summarizing is longer paraphrasing. They condense or crystallize the essence of what the client is telling and feeling. Summarizing commonly cover an extended time than a paraphrase where reflecting back " whereas paraphrasing can be used after some sentences. A summary may be used after a while perhaps half way through a counseling consultation, or near the give up of a counseling session (Wolz, 2011). In this movie 50/50, Katherine can use this technique, to sum up what Adam said earlier end her session easily. This will help her to clarify content and be on the track of what Adam is saying and this will help Adam to feel free to talk more. Example, where Adam says that just look at me.
