This film inherently created a career for Hoffman who went on to be featured in other lead roles such as Kramer vs. Kramer and Rain Man. Simon and Garfunkel saw success after the release of the films soundtrack and their next studio album due to the music industry’s focus on the folk genre at the time. Rumor Has It (2005), a romantic comedy directed by Rob Reiner, continues the plot further when Sarah Huttinger (Jennifer Aniston) learns from her grandmother Katherine (Shirley MacLaine) that her family was the vision behind the novel The
The Graduate, a film directed by Mike Nichols in 1976, is a film that has influenced the way I view the world. It is a story of a college graduate, Benjamin Braddock (played by Dustin Hoffman), who finds himself trapped in the superficial or “plastic” world around him. Because of this, he feels trapped, depressed, and insecure about his future. This makes him an easy target for Mrs. Robinson (played by Anne Bancroft), the middle-aged cougar and wife of his father’s business partner. At Ben’s Graduation party, Mrs. Robinson manipulates Ben into driving her home and coming into her daughter’s bedroom, supposedly to look at her daughter’s picture, where she appears before him naked offering herself to him. Ben refuses her at first, but when Ben feels like he cannot escape the pressure of his future, he decides to start an affair with Mrs. Robinson as a way to mentally escape. Ben continues to meet Mrs. Robinson at night until he realizes
The film that I chose to write about is a Paramount Pictures presentation titled Mean Girls, starring Lindsay Lohan and also featuring a handful of Saturday Night Live cast members, including Tina Fey the author of this picture. The reason behind choosing this film is because it has a unique style of introducing characters, transitioning between scenes, and various tools to help spice up the film. Being one of my personal favorites, Mean Girls is a comedy about a home schooled teenage girl who enters high school for the first time. She tries to figure herself out by where she can fit in and who she needs to become friends with.
Many of Hollywood’s most popular actors and films have been strongly influenced by Mike Nichols’ 1967 classic, The Graduate. Actor Dustin Hoffman, (All the President’s Men) made his Hollywood debut in the film that would change American cinema for the better. The Graduate occurs during a time when social status was deteriorating and when peace and love were on the rise. Hoffman plays an unusual character by the name of Benjamin Braddock, who would soon become an extraordinary example for many future leading characters. Due to the suggestive material and bold display of human immorality and lust, The Graduate can be considered the first real coming-of-age film. American cinema developed a new outlook on what visual drama could encompass through

Dialogue is the "meat" in a screenplay. The role od dialogue is to push the story forward and shows us who the characters are. Seeing is believing in film. It os called visual storytelling for a reason. I didn't realize how much could be wrong with one's dialogue. For the short, Intercambios the dialogue was on the nose. One technique that comes to mind is K.IS.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid." This film kept me engaged and emotionally invested. The subtext was wonderful and I knew what the characters meant by something that was not said. The script on paper was very clear. There were no extra lines or "talking wallpaper." The dialogue describes Cristina as an honest and hardworking daughter, helping to support her struggling family in another country. She saved eight thousand dollars to help them and went to the bank to wire the money to surprise them. The subtext shows who she is and so does the script. She calls her mother being so happy and humble. It indicates that she is hardworking. From the prepaid cell phone to the mattress that lay on the floor, I knew she was honest. However when she meets the
If a young child makes a small snowball and lets it go down a hill, it rolls down and begins stick to other pieces. The snowball grows and shapes into something wonderful. The originally small, little ball becomes so much more than the child ever intended or can ever imagine. The most beautiful things grow this way, from a little seed into something great. This is life. All the small things can become something great and wonderful and so much more than we could possibly hope for.
Mike Nichols delivered a memorable piece through his film, “The Graduate.” A mildly comedic-drama about a young man, Benjammin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman), lost in sense of “direction” and found his path through the seduction of an older woman, Mrs. Robinson, (Anne Bancroft). We saw all sorts of visual and verbal dramatic scenes to depict Braddock’s lack of experience tackling the world after submerging himself in school.
The event I attended was a movie called The Hunting Grounds. It was about sexual assault on campuses all over the United States and how many campuses had been ignoring the fact that there were assaults on their campuses and blamed it on the fact that the victims were dressed a certain way or that there was alcohol involved. The general idea was that it was the victims fault that they got assaulted, and the college or university had little to no consequences for their perpetrator. This event was of interest to me because I had heard good reviews about the movie, plus it was a learning opportunity to see what the process is like for other schools who have to deal with sexual assault. It was interesting to see how each school had a different
I completed the Human Rights and Social Justice Pathway. From the courses I took for Pathway, I was able to make several connections with my fellow classmates. Especially for the classes that required working with groups, I got along with several of my classmates and have been able to create social networks. Even after some of those classmates have graduated and moved away, we still keep in touch to talk about social issues that occur, events that may interest one of us, or just to help one another through difficult times. Personally, I do not think I would have been able to make these connections if I had not joined Pathways. I originally was only a psychology major, but after joining Pathways, there were several sociology classes that interested me, therefore, I added sociology as my minor. Many

Throughout this class, various discussions and blogs have been used to analyze the different elements of films such as theme, cinematic techniques and genre. It is time to bring all of these separate elements together in the analysis of one specific film, according to class text, “analyzing levels of meaning below the surface story can greatly enhance enjoyment as well as understanding of a film” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014. p. 10.03). There are several different approaches to film analysis including formalist, auteurist, and generic or any combination thereof. Utilizing a genre theory lens, the 1956 film The Searchers will be analyzed addressing contextual information, story/plot, aesthetic choices, social/personal impact and how these areas come together to develop the film.
Part 1 - In American author's 2009 book, The Help, the primary thesis is the relationship between Black maids and white households in Jackson, Mississippi during the early 1960s. The story is really told from three perspectives, Aibileen and Minny are Black women, both maids, and Skeeter is the nickname of Eugenia Phelan, daughter of a prominent White family. Skeeter has just finished school and hopes to become a writer. In general, the relationship between the Black maids and the White employers is six sided: On one side we have the White employers who have three views: 1) Their personal and private beliefs that can range from extreme scorn and bias to kindness regarding race; 2) Their public persona that must have the "proper" attitude about Blacks and "the help," and 3) Their employer attitude, which is condescending and parental. The Black view also has three segments: 1) Their personal and private beliefs that usually range from understanding not all Whites are the same and an extreme love and empathy for the White children for whom they care; 2) The public persona that is deferential, polite, and stoic to their White bosses; and 3) Their attitude and view among the Black community, which usually separates the "poor and ignorant but rich" White souls from the Black view of family and common sense. All in all, the relationship is contentious, phony, and based on economic advantage.
There are many different types of film and film genres. A film can fit into more than one genre, but there are some genres that are more general than others. Some examples of film genre are animated, science fiction, documentary, comedy, and historical fiction. Within each genre, there are also specific characteristics that help support themes and story lines within that genre.
