The English language is particularly complex in almost all aspects. Many of the words in the English language have different meanings for the same word. This is not unlike the definition of the different levels of usage. McCrimmon defines the three levels, formal, moderate, and colloquial, by their sentence structure, diction, and tone (McCrimmon 193). ¹ Using McCrimmon’s definitions, authors can determine what type of writing is applicable to each of the three levels. For the formal writings, an adequate example of where readers can find it is in a professional journal, and an appropriate place to find an example of the moderate level is in a weekly news magazine. Also, the best place to look for an example of the colloquial level is in certain sections of the newspaper. All of the levels of usage apply to these different types of writings and assist in defining what each level involves. Nevertheless, the most complex level of usage that McCrimmon discusses is the formal level of usage. One point of the formal structure is that the sentences are “relatively long and involved” (193). The sentences in scholarly articles typically follow rules, which makes them more difficult to read than other types of writing. Further, these writings also use “extensive vocabulary” (193). There are often words that most people would not know the meaning of unless they are professionals in that field. In addition, sentences in the formal level “make no attempt to establish
In Malaysia, English language is stereotypically considered as a person’s second or third language. Majority of Malaysians’ native language is Malay for Malays, Tamil for Indians, Mandarin for Chinese or colloquial dialects for those from rural areas. In this paper, I would reflect on my English language learning experiences.
Also, it is important to note the difference of formal (rhetorical) versus informal (discourse) which can also change the meaning of the context between the characters within the text. An example of this can be when focusing on a situational pragmatics in which relationships are being made prominent by the words being used. Within the text, Huck does not have the best relationship with the widow’s sister Miss Watson. When Huck describes the environment as he is working with Miss Watson, this is a distinct change in the way in which the text is written, allowing the reader to understand that Huck is not comfortable with the old
Verbal limbs and pretentious diction are the substituting of simple words with straightforward meanings with lesser-known vocabulary words that are believed to indicate one’s intelligence. A person would never use pretentious diction in an everyday conversation, but it is often found in writing. They consist of the use of scientific terminology and words that are other language, often Latin or Greek. Pretentious diction clouds the meaning of the writing by simply making it harder to immediately understand. Verbal limbs replace simple terms with longer, more complex phrases that are meant to reflect the writer’s intelligence. They are detrimental to writing because they are often passive phrases that serve little more purpose than to increase

Language is a powerful communication tool the user holds to express their individual identity and ingroup solidarity. The use of Standard English helps to direct this, as it acts as the structure of communication, ingroup and between speech communities to effectively present a standard for mutual understanding. Outside of Standard English comes the use of slang, netspeak and textspeak, which helps to develop and enrich the language, as well as evolve with contemporary Australia and its fast paced lifestyle. Using the Standard all the time would be exclusive of the linguistic freedom formed by the world beyond Standard English with varying ethnolects, but is also a
My fascination with the English language had been rooted as far back as my youth. I had always most prominently noticed my endless interest in the English language. It was as if each word stroke to me, as if each string of sentence never fails to draw me into a trance. I am Alice, and likewise, the English language is my wonderland. The thick books with large letter strewn in patterns never once intimidated me. I read Jack Kerouac, and Sylvia Plath as soon as I knew how to read, for their novels had nefarious characters, thrilling denouement, doused in enviable lucidity. I fell in love with the English language, before I know what love is. Consequently, I had decided to study English language as to incite my skills in writing, and to refine my knowledge in the subject that I had so easily fall in love with.
In the last 30 years, a new paradigm in linguistics, CL, has revealed that much that has been supposed different and arbitrary under the traditional aspect of language is, actually, systematic. CL supplies a combined, accessible account of how many grammatical constructions and lexical items work, and how different uses of these forms are systematically related to one another. Because CL accepts a usage-based approach to language, it is aware of the contexts in which lexical items and grammatical constructions occur.
Word choice in writing is influenced by the context, just as is the case between formal speeches and informal ones. The kind of words in formal and less formal writing gravitates between academic and formal, depending on the context and the message being put across. The morphemes used in both formal (academic) and less formal (as is the case in newspapers), vary. Formal writing uses different word forms and morphemes, due to the strict nature of this kind of written communication. Less formal writing moves between using a lot of morphemes and still maintaining a certain level of formality, so as to communicate effectively. In some instances, less formal writing may even use colloquial language and a lot of morphemes. In this discussion, the focus is on an academic form of writing and a less formal kind of writing, picked from a newspaper. The discussion shall analyze how morphemes have been used in the two kinds of writing and why this is the case.
Language is the way humans communicate with eachother. Most of us use it verbally, many use it in writing and other use sign language in order to communicate. Language is part of almost everything amongst us, we read it or hear it on a daily basis. If we are driving we read signs on the road, when we buy stuff we read labels and we could not read without knowing the language, and when we speak we also use language. But language does not stand alone, linguistics is a huge part of it. In my opinion, linguistics is by far one of the most intriguing subjects and classes I have ever taken before. I believe it is a subject everyone seems to be familiar with, yet not really aware of how and why we know the gist of it. Linguistics is the scientific study of human language and its structure, we study language because it teaches us how to communicate with others. Language is everywhere and part of our everyday lives, we use language to communicate with everyone around us. For many communication is vital as part of our jobs and for others it is a form of expression. Language is something that can make us feel wonderful and happy, if someone compliments you, it makes you feel good, but it is also something that can be used to hurt and make people cry, it is a powerful tool humans have. Language whether it be verbal or not has meaning and we must know the basics in order to communicate effectively. In linguistics we learn about the different perspective of language and the different
English is my native language. Southern English is my dialect. I traveled all over the world, many times over and I have many observations on languages. Though English was my natural language, I was surrounded by a large variety of dialects.

Overt approach is very handy when it comes to introducing the function of the text, system and linguistics structure in English Language. In ‘Enhancing Competency in English’, Shah stated that overt approach is essential in promoting learners’ awareness of grammar rules in English language. Shah (2015) has defined overt approach as ‘Overt approach is a process of dividing the whole parts of speech into manageable bite size chunks and then introduces these to the students (p.).
Specialists in descriptive grammar (linguists) examine the principles and patterns that underlie the use of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. In contrast, prescriptive
