Facebook is the most popular social networking site of all time. Within six years, Facebook has experienced dramatic growth. For many, Facebook has become an integral part of day-to-day life. Social media has become deeply embedded as a part of today’s American culture and lifestyles, changing the way people interact and communicate with one another. Americans use social media every day; to not only communicate, but to express themselves. These online media sites and blogs serve as entertainment for its users and give them a sense of a social life if they do not already have one. Some users become so obsessed with their online lives that they lose the ability to successfully communicate with people in real life. Their craving for the use of social media becomes an addiction to where they can spend countless hours on their social sites. Facebook, a popular social media cite, has been proven to cause Facebook Depression, a sickness in which a person is emotionally depressed and in self denial. Social media is the term that is used to refer to applications and websites that allow people to interact and stay connected (Nations, 2016). Although, the creation of social networking sites is relatively recent, it has rapidly become a prominent part of billions of people’s lives worldwide. For example, between 2012 and 2016 the number of monthly active Facebook users increased by 83% (Statista, 2016). As a result, investigating the effects of social media on people’s psychological wellbeing has become a popular area of research. However, the combination of findings from these studies are inconclusive as to whether social media has a negative or a positive impact on our psychological wellbeing and because social media is so widely used this is an important question to address. Huppert (2009) stated that “Psychological wellbeing is about lives going well. It is the combination of feeling good and functioning effectively” (p. 137). This essay will focus on Facebook, in particular, as it’s the most widely used social network and has over 1.5 billion monthly active users (Smith, 2016). It will discuss research that has investigated the effects of Facebook on life satisfaction, academic performance and psychiatric disorders which are all related to psychological wellbeing. It will conclude that research mostly suggests that social media, in particular Facebook, is harmful to our psychological wellbeing.

Social media dates as far back as 1997. Starting with one of the most popular platforms; Facebook. This social media website encapsulates all of the different kinds of social networks there are. Just about everyone has a facebook, from your parents to grandparents and even your 13 year old sibling. Facebook was launched on February 4, 2004. The founders are Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin. As of June 2017 there are 2.01 billion active Facebook users. The most common age demographic is 25 to 34 which is 29.7% of Facebook users.
Facebook transformed society in many ways, including: how people communicate, how they spend their time, how politicians campaign, and how businesses and consumers interact. Facebook is one of the largest social media websites that allows users to communicate, connect, and share with their friends and family. Facebook was launched in 2004 to exclusively Harvard students, but in 2006, it allowed anyone was 13 or above to have an account. There are many social media sites that people use today in order to communicate with others, like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, SnapChat, Pinterest, and YouTube to name a few that I use daily. My first article discusses the relationship between the use of Facebook, which is a very popular online social network. “Social network sites such as Friendster, Cyworld, and Myspace allows individuals to present themselves, articulate their social networks, and establish connections with others”(Lampe, Ellison, & Steinfield,2007). “These sites can be orientated towards work related content ( LinkedIn.com), romantic relationship invite (Friendster.com), or basically everyone uses ( Facebook.com)” (Lampe, Ellison, & Steinfield,2007). As one of largest and fastest growing social platforms ever, Facebook is now the ballpark to which all others social traffic sources are compared. With 1.39 billion active users every month, it 's a hive of social activity and there 's plenty of honey to had.
Since its creation in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook has welcomed itself into the homes and devices of billions of people around the world, roughly 2.07 billion to be exact. Most of its users would argue, Facebook provides many useful and convenient factors such as allowing its users to share photos, keep up-to-date with friends and family, share new ideas and opinions, and communicate with nearly anyone, no matter how far away, with only the tap of a screen. However, although Facebook may seem to be one of the best inventions of the century, the questions researchers have long debated is whether or not Facebook is having negative effects on its users as well. Mental health has been the number one concern among researchers with college students being the at the heads of many studies. Although scholars have noted that Facebook has the ability to build self-esteem and enhance overall life satisfaction, they have missed, as my research shows, the importance of studying adverse effects it can have on student’s mental health as well.
