In the beginning of the movie, Hancock portrays him as not very intelligent, in school and on the football field. Oher resents this portrayal saying that while he may not have been the brightest in school, he had common sense, and he was not new to football. With the portrayal of him being brand new to the game, the movie also makes Oher look like an overnight success, going from not understanding the game to being the star player. Being portrayed as a football prodigy on screen leads Oher to believe that the movie is the reason he is being harshly critiqued on the field. In his interview with Huffington post Oher said, “This stuff, calling me a bust, people saying if I can play or not…that has nothing to do with football. It’s something else off the field. That’s why I don’t like the movie.” Despite the negative impact that Oher believes the movie has made on his football career, he cannot deny the impact his story has made on others. In Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohys new book In a Heartbeat, they talk about the impact that adopting Oher has made in their life and how it has made them appreciate what they have. “Based on a book by journalist Michael Lewis chronicling the real life Oher’s experiences, “The Blind Side” manages to inspire despite its broad-strokes approach to characterization.”(VLM, 2010) The Blind Side is based on a true story, the story of Michael Oher, a homeless boy with a traumatic past until one women, Leigh Ann, took him in as her own son and changed his life for the better. Michael is now known as an American football player, that was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens. The film, “The Blind side”, produced by John Lee Hancock, demonstrates that a tragic childhood does not necessarily mean one is destined for defeat, as long as there are those who care enough about you. “The Blind Side” uses rhetorical appeals by illustrating ethos, logos, and pathos to teach the audience moral lessons on learning and coping with traumatic life experiences and defining oneself socially through personal actions.
Unfortunately, his father was murdered in prison so he could not overcome that obstacle. However, he was taken in by a foster family named the Tuohy’s who made him happy and treated him like real family. Biography.com says, “The young boy was finally taken in by Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy when he was 16, and the Tuohys became Oher's legal guardians when he was 17”. In his junior year of high school, Oher began to excel in football. By the beginning of his senior year, Oher was the starting left tackle on the varsity football team. He quickly became a top football prospect in the state of Tennessee, which led to multiple scholarship offers from Division 1 schools.” This means that when he was taken in by Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy and they became his legal guardians he began to excel at school and football. His mother was taken into a rehabilitation center, but this was an improvement since at least Michael was able to see her sometimes. His other siblings were all taken to foster care. It’s amazing that while he had all of these obstacles he still overcame them with a determined attitude and the help of some special people.
Also he officially joined the Tuohy household at around the same time. For him, life and football became intertwined as he became a top prospect for colleges because of his high school games. Chapter five is a transition for the book, shifting towards how the stars aligned for Michael to become the prime example of a star offensive lineman. As he grew as a person and football player, the game evolved with him. When he got more mechanically skilled, Oher stood out. Meanwhile in the NFL, there was “a new prototype of the NFL tackle that made [Oher] so interesting to football coaches.” (103). Now he was a star, the perfect build and skills to make the NFL, which for a high school athlete is incredibly high praise. Without the growth he experienced playing for Briarcrest, Oher would not come close to the opportunities he received. Now more than ever he was his own person, and he had a way to express it through
Oher is a great example of how a character’s past does not define him or how successful he will be in the future. Michael is scarred by his upbringing, but now has a new
This chapter shows the reader what Roger, the father of Rachel, was like when she was in the Hospital. In this chapter, Brick, whose name is Jamie, whose name is James, meets the father of the girl who fell from the roof. He meets him when he is looking for the room in which the girl is being kept in the hospital. When Brick meets the girl's father, at first he is wearing his full military uniform. At first, Brick sees him as a respectful military man, but as the days go by, the man, just like his attire, starts to deteriorate.
Finally, the story of Oher shows examples of work ethic and perseverance. Michael had to overcome many problems in his life. He started off living in the dumps, with barely any food, and overcoming all of that is crazy. When he moved in with the Tuohys he overcame many things. He wasn’t the smartest kid ever. For him to stay on the football team he had to earn a certain grade point average. He worked super hard in the classroom and studied a ton at home with a private tutor. Michael Oher is a perfect example of work ethic and
