June 3, 2016 Renee Harding 123 Dog Lane Raleigh, NC 27695 Dear Renee, I appreciate the opportunity to advise you regarding the tax treatment for your loss of $25,406 in 2015 from your dog breeding activities. I understand that you decided to start breeding purebred terriers to keep yourself busy after your divorce with your husband in January. There are two possible ways to treat the loss under rulings in the Internal Revenue Code. One option is to treat your dog breeding activity as a business and deduct the losses on Schedule C, Profit or Loss from Business, of your individual income tax return. The second option is to treat your dog breeding as an activity not engaged in for profit, which does not allow you to deduct the …show more content…
The only deductions allowed are expenses that would be deductible regardless of the activities tax status, such as property taxes, and expenses that would be deductible had the activity been a trade or business. Since your activity is not for profit, your loss of $25,406 may not be used to offset other income. The deductions related to your dog breeding activities should be claimed as itemized deductions on Schedule A of your individual income tax return. During my research, I made the following assumptions. First, I assumed that before starting the dog breeding activities, you had no prior experience breeding animals. If you had, I would have to reconsider your activities as a business since previous experience would support having a profit objective. I also assumed that your annual alimony is your main source of income, as opposed to relying on the sale of dogs you breed, as this would also support a profit objective. There are also some implications to your tax return regarding my conclusion. One consequence is that you can only deduct your expenses up to the amount of your income. Having a loss from your not-for profit activity means that the receipts will be ignored and the loss will not be a part of allowable deductions. Depending on the amount of expenses, it could help reduce your taxes, but
In addition to pet owners being irresponsible with breeding practices, some owners believe that they can breed the animals for a profit. They do not take into consideration the moral or
A: Pet mills put money and profit, before the health of the animals they are breeding. Animals from these mills are usually living in disgusting conditions, and not getting the medical care that they need (Sheeter, n.d.). Because of this, the animals can get very prone to sickness, and have behavioural problems. They are left in small crates, squished together, have terrible diets, and dirty water (Sheeter, n.d.). A lot of dogs have been neglected or abused and have had little attention, interaction with humans or other animals, or obedience trainings. They were not treated with any sort or respect or appreciation or care, and they deserve that. The mums of the puppies are caged and constantly bred until they no longer can, they do not get
Introduction: Today I will persuading my audience the benefits of getting a dog as a pet. Dogs can offer companionship, protection and even improve your health. Sixty eight percent of U.S households own a pet according to the 2017-2018 National Pet Owners Survey calculated by American Pet Products Association (APPA), and majority of the pets owned are dogs, weighing in at sixty percent. Dogs are domesticated animals that consist of various breeds such as Yorkie Terriers, German shepherds and more. There are over three hundred breeds according to the World Canine organization. This organization is the largest registry of certified dog breeds. This canine organization recognizes three hundred and thirty nine breeds of dogs which are classified into ten groups based on the dog’s function or size. There are various unique breeds that can fit into one’s specific lifestyle, giving no excuse not to have a dog to compliment ones personality.
In order to deduct her moving expenses, she must meet certain conditions outlined in Reg. 1.217-2 (c). Helen meets the first two requirements (relevance to work test and distance test) without any issue. The third requirement has not yet been met yet though. This requirement is a minimum period of employment. Since she is a full-time employee, she must work full-time in this general location for at least 39 weeks during the 12 month period after the move. This does not mean she is not required to remain employed at her current place of work to meet this test. Even though she does not meet this requirement yet, she can deduct these expenses on the current years return or the year the reimbursement is paid to her by her employer. If she recognizes the expenses on this year’s return and does not end up meeting the requirement, she will have to include the deductions she took on this year’s return in next year’s gross income.
A quote once said by Frederick the Great states; “A dog is a man’s best friend.” There are millions of dog lovers across the world, I’m speaking to many in this class right now, so dog lovers, have you ever thought about this? Imagine walking into a pet store and looking around at all the different kinds of animals, and then your eyes are set on the dogs. You just can’t decide what one you want. One of the main key facts about choosing the right dog is considering where it is raised and many dog owners don’t. Some of the dogs could have been raised in a puppy mill. Puppy mills are a problem in the U.S today. And the problem with puppy mills is the effect they have on the dog itself and even the owner.

A second horrible feature about puppy mills is that they are overpopulated. They are mass bred in warehouses. Breeding takes place in warehouses because there is a lot of space for the 70+ breeds that are in a mill (Dionne 7). According to the ASPCA, the female dogs are bred every time that they are in heat and when they cannot be bred anymore, they are killed. Pamela Sacks has also researched the same things that the ASPCA has and she additionally found out that mill dogs are bred consistently until they can no longer be bred then they are killed (par.4). It is a common thought that puppy mills do not breed purebred dogs. According to Dionne, mills breed both purebred and mix breed dogs (7). A mix breed dog would be one that is a combination of two or more breeds. For example, a goldendoodle is a mix breed dog. It is a combination of a golden retriever and a poodle. A purebred dog is one that has two parents of the same breed. For example, a Yorkshire Terrier is a purebred. Both of its parents were Yorkshire Terriers so the
In today’s evolving society, there is more mobility that ever for people with disabilities. One of the things that allows this to happen is the use of service animals. Problems however arise when people try to cheat the system. Attempts to pass off pets as service animals, improperly trained animals, and businesses with lack of knowledge on laws all contribute to ongoing frustrations. The need for a centralized training standard as well as government registration and regulation of service animals is clear and immediate. If standards can be established within breeding clubs for “Good Citizen” training, then it can be done for service dogs. Then, once
There are various amounts of breeds of dogs that get put down at pounds because of their breeds. Dog breeds still get discriminated today. Dog breeds, such as Pit Bulls, Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, Chow Chows, Great Danes, Perro de Presa Canario, Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, German Shepherds, Siberian Huskies, and Wolf Hybrids (wolf dogs) all get discriminated today. Dog discrimination is from attacks the dogs are involved in.
For millions of years dogs have remained a constant companion of man. Bred from the aggressive and formidable Gray Wolf tens of thousands of years ago the domestic dog now lives in many homes across the world. Where in the far distant past the domestic dog was bred as a guard animal, a beast of burden, and even a food source the dogs of today are bred for a far more endearing purpose-companionship and love. Finding a pet dog that is more of a joy than a chore is necessary when asking: How much is that puppy in the window?
The cost of a service dog can be very expensive, if not obtained by an organization that receives donations and helps the family out. The average annual cost to maintain a dog was $1307, with a range of $195-$5134 (Davis 134). The daily routine changes in some of the families affected the dogs negatively. The dog would have bathroom accidents in the home, which were frowned upon by the family. The stress of the day to day activities with the child would be too much for the dog to handle at times, fatigue and attitude changes were apparent. The majority of problems faced with a service dog can be eliminated, with a set routine and normal breaks given to the dog.
The U.S. owned-dog population is 78.2 million and it is growing steadily. With a population so large it is no surprise that the pet

Smackey Dog Foods, Inc. is a familiar story in terms of small business start-ups. They started in a family kitchen, experienced explosive growth, and have had some troubles handling the accounting and business side of the business. My firm, Keller CPA’s, does not have specific experience with auditing a dog food manufacturer, but we certainly have a good bit of experience with similar small business accounting and auditing issues.
In the debate, I had the role of a dog breeder, meaning I had to come up with reasons with evidence that supports breeding was good. This wasn’t very hard for me as my personal opinion is very similar to this. I believe that good breeding is beneficial and good for society! Obviously dog breeding is good because it creates so many beautiful dogs. In fact if a dog is crossbred, then it gives the pup unique looking faces and body types. Dog breeding also can create a genetic biodiversity since crossbreeding can make dogs have a variety of different genes, causing dogs to have a greater likelihood of survival through natural selection, with their unique characteristics. Adding to my previous statement, I can include that dog breeding is beneficial
