Student Success Assignment Some people may call Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder a curse; I would actually consider it a gift. Having the disorder has its challenges, and blessings. However, I find that when managed, ADHD can be a genuine asset in my life. The website “Study Guides and Strategies” provided many useful tips that I hope to use as a tool while learning, or apply in any classroom setting. Using these tricks and tips, the issues that I face while learning will hopefully become managed, and eventually become an asset to this journey we call learning. I sometimes believe there are not enough hours in the day to do the tasks I desire, but what is useful is the tactics that the writer laid out. One major tactic was to become aware of how I use my time and be honest and realistic with myself. He mentioned to designate blocks of time for study and time for breaks. Usually, I tend to study in my room but that is a terrible place to study, since there is the distraction of Facebook, instant messaging, and just technology as a whole. Weekly reviews are something I never thought about doing. I found it interesting how this tactic was to make a calendar of the week’s goals, and to designate how much time should be approximated to spend on the task at hand. Reviewing notes and readings just before class seems to be helpful, as before I used to only do the readings assigned as homework and would never review notes. I’ve tried it, and actually retained a lot more of the information. One thing that I might actually try is to get a visual calendar and have things due one day before they are actually due, so that I will not have any late assignments, and the work will be of an “A” quality. Reading speed and comprehension is one of the most difficult skills I’ve had to develop. The website mentions to read a chapter of the textbook while timing yourself to see how long it takes to read a chapter, and plan your time accordingly. As I began this class I considered several study strategies to help me be successful. One of these that has been very helpful so far is setting a dedicated time each day to focus on the reading and learning the materials. There are a multitude of ways that you can find to help you succeed academically. After reading chapter 7 I noticed many important ideas that I did not come across before and are very interesting. The first concept I learned about ADHD is that it’s not currently recognized as a discrete disability under IDEA legislation; however, young students may still be eligible for a special education. In the course textbook, it mentions “ADHD as a condition that renders an individual eligible for services under the rubric other health impairments” (Gargiulo 241). Secondly, this chapter lists suspicions such as neurological dysfunction, heredity, and environmental factors as the causes of ADHD. I believe that because professionals are still unsure of what causes attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, teachers and educators should know and recognize those students and offer services, support and accommodations.

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), recently re-named Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), is a condition affecting many children, adolescents and adults (Resnick, 2005). ADHD manifests itself through behaviors of hyperactivity, impulsivity, inattention and a lack of stick-to-itiveness (Resnick). Initially, researchers believed ADHD impacted children throughout their young lives and subsided around puberty (Kern, Rasmussen, Byrd & Wittschen, 1999). By the late 20th century, researchers have discovered that 30-70 percent of children diagnosed with ADHD experience recurring symptoms throughout their adult lives; thus, showing the disease to be a lifelong ordeal (Kern et al.). This discovery led to many young adults in college being diagnosed with the disorder (kern et al.). ADHD can go undiagnosed throughout childhood and adolescence as young people develop methods to compensate and obscure the problems associated with it—until the pressure and workload of college life, or a latent neurological deficit unmasks the condition (Kern et al.).

Having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has significantly impacted my life. The ramifications of this learning difference have affected not just my academic life but my personal life as well, and have been a source of some conflict between my parents and I. However, I have made a number of strides towards dealing with this condition, and am proud to say that a number of changes I have made in my life are largely able to offset the negative consequences ADHD can produce.

Student Success Day was just that for me: a success. I was able to help at the expo and learn about various intriguing clubs. I had not know there were so many extra-curricular opportunities at RCTC. Moreover, the sessions I attended were helpful and informative and I appreciate the hardwork that went into making student success day a success.

Those who classify as having ADHD are often seen as being disruptive, distracting during class and unable to pay attention. This behavior will not only impact the child, but as well as the family of the child, their peers and along with other factors too. For those in various settings, those don’t often realize the main causes of what indicates certain behaviors in the classroom and other locations. As a helping professional, this would have an awareness for everyone to effectively address the needs of the person. By seeing what the root of this behavior is caused by, we can then determine what else can be done to limit those symptoms
