Data Visually and Through Numbers
Data File 2 - Chapter Three (Show all your work) 1) A teacher asked each of her students how many novels they had read in the previous six months. The results are shown below.
0 1 5 4 2 1 3 2
2 7 2 5 0 1 0 1
1 2 6 0 2 3 1 2
7 1 4 2 3 1 7 0
0 2 1 1 0 6 1 7
Construct a frequency table for the number of novels read.
Solution:
Number of novels read | Frequency | 0 | 7 | 1 | 11 | 2 | 9 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 2 | 5 | 2 | 6 | 2 | 7 | 4 |
2) The frequency table shows the weights in ounces of 30 stones
Weight (oz) Number of Stones
1.2-1.6 5
1.7-2.1 2
2.2-2.6 5
2.7-3.1 5 3.2-3.6.1.1 13
Use the above information to construct a cumulative frequency

Solution:

Chapter Four (Show all your work) 1) The students of Hugh Logan’s math class took the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Their math scores are shown below. Find the mean score.
552 593 358 352 537
349 357 596 470 482
Solution: The mean score of the students of Hugh Logan's math class is 552 + 593 + 358 + 352 + 537 + 349 + 357 + 596 + 470 + 482 = 4646 10 10 = 46.46
The mean score is 46.46 2) The salaries of ten randomly selected physicians are shown below. Find the median salary.
$105,000 $149,000 $163,000 $214,000 $225,000
$116,000 $111,000 $791,000 $240,000 $178,000
Solution: To find the median, we first sort the data in ascending order:
$105,000, $111,000, $116,000, $149,000, $163,000, $178,000, $214,000, $225,000, $240,000, $791,000
Because there are ten salaries (an even number), there are two values in the middle of the list: $163,000 and $178,000. Therefore the median lies halfway between these two values. The median is calculated by adding them and dividing by 2:
1. For the following scores, find the mean, median, and the mode. Which would be the most appropriate measure for this data set?
Due to financial hardship, the Nyke shoe company feels they only need to make one size of shoes, regardless of gender or height. They have collected data on gender, shoe size, and height and have asked you to tell them if they can change their business model to include only one size of shoes – regardless of height or gender of the wearer. In no more 5-10 pages (including figures), explain your recommendations, using statistical evidence to support your findings. The data found are below:
|1 |$ 60 |$ 45 |$ 105 |$ 60 |$ 45 |$ 105 |$ 45 |
b) In order to calculate the mean or average for the governors and CEO’s, I added together all the figures and divided that sum by 4 since there
(2) Give that a sample of 25 had x = 75, and (x-x)² = 48 the mean and standard
4. Calculate the following measures of central tendency for the set of cube measurement data. Show your work or explain your procedure for each.
4. Give the mean for the median column of the Worksheet. Is this estimate centered about the parameter of interest (the parameter of interest is the answer for the mean in question 2)
1. By hand, compute the mean, median, and mode for the following set of 40 reading scores:
Part B. Describe two mathematical strengths for each student whose response indicates the need to reteach the math content.
A pharmaceutical company is testing the effectiveness of a new drug for lowering cholesterol. As part of this trial, they wish to determine whether there is a difference between the effectiveness for women and for men. Using = .05, what is the value the test statistic?
