People around the world have certain ideas that seem to be so obvious that they defend them in any possible way, sometimes without doubting and testing. Sociologists always analyze the ideas and conduct a scientific study to make sure that information is accurate. They are not trying to find out what is wrong and what is right, but are looking for the reasons why people act in a specific way. Just like we have learned from the chapter, sociologists do not ask ethical or moral questions and do not make any judgments. Instead, they ask questions that can be tested scientifically. In order to be able to put other ideas to test without assuming that they are true or not just because they match or mismatch our own ideas, we need to look at the picture from other …show more content…
We can easily feel the anger, since it is our country, our recourses, and we are here to protect it and fight for it. This amount of information was quite enough for us to realize how unfair the situation is and how it has to be fixed. When we hear about Muslims thinking that Americans are there for the oil only, how rich people are in America while they live in poverty, we already know that information is not very accurate and it is a little more difficult for us to step into their shoes. But it is still easy to understand their motivations and hatred toward Americans by looking at the situation from their perspective. Limited amount of information and misunderstanding are the reasons for them to feel that way. Again, it is easy for us to step in the shoes of the woman who is receiving the flag because her loved one has died in the war. Our family members, relatives, friends have been fighting the war for many years now and many of American citizens got killed. We all know about this situation, and therefore it is not hard for us to step into this woman’s
Sociologists are people who are fascinated with the study of doings of men. A sociologist goes through the world of men without respect for the usual lines of demarcation. We could say that the sociologist is the man who must listen to gossip. What interest sociologist are the curiosity that grips any in front of a closed door which behind are human voices. A sociologist will occupy himself with matters that others refer as too sacred or as too unpleasant for emotionless investigation. In these travels through the world of men, a sociologist will naturally experience other professional Peeping Toms. In some places the sociologist will meet up with the economist, political scientist, psychologist or the ethnologist. Most of the time a sociologist
Life is strange, and comes with many questions. Questions that do not have many answers. We create our own answers, with the help of sociologist and other scientist that study human behavior. Sociologist study humans and use different concepts and methods to get further knowledge of society, and helps us relate to other people in our society. Sociologist use many different tools, and resources to gain knowledge and date to help us understand ourselves better.
Sociology is viewed as the scientific study of society, it is a scientific study because the views presented in sociology is based upon empirical data (information gained from constructing detail research). How what makes
Sociologists observe the world to find a problem or an interesting pattern, then begin to study their findings. They use research methods to design a study, such as a detailed, scientific method for piloting research and obtaining data, or study an outline. The research method is the main step in a sociological study.
The job of sociologists is to uncover the social laws that govern human behaviour. When they collect information about the social world, they usually subscribe to a scientific model known as the hypothetico-deductive approach. This is the model that natural science employs in, for example, laboratory experiments.
What stuck out to me in this entire chapter was the value neutrality that Max Weber suggested that every sociologists should practice so that they do not allow their personal emotions to interfere with the results of data. Allowing the sociologist to use their personal feelings in the process of the experimental process, will ruin the experiment, making the experiment not reliable or valid. I agree with that you should not permit things, emotion or beliefs come into any aspect during the investigation because letting that happen will just make the finds of the experiment be about what you believe. That would be unethical because in order for something to be right, you must be able to back it up with evidence to prove it accurate. Even “though that some sociologists believe that neutrality is impossible, ignoring the issue would be irresponsible” (Richard T Schaefer 51). It is hard not to add your own thoughts and opinions to things. The problem of neutrality does not indicate that sociologists can not have their own opinions, but they have to make sure that they are not biases in any matter. This connects to situations in the the real world because in any job you are not permitted to let your
Sociologists use scientific methods because in today’s world we require “facts” and “data.” Sociologists are using scientific methods so that they will not be fooled easily. It was very interesting going through the scientific methods’ with the example. This made easier for me to understand how scientific methods
In general, sociologists tend to conduct their research outside the confines of the laboratory. The reasons for this are somewhat obvious; sociologists study society and relationships within society, and in order to effectively study and understand human nature in its natural environment, it is necessary to conduct research outside the laboratory and directly in the society. Sociologists still conduct research in a lab, however, but the risk of creating artificial environments and thus obtaining unrealistic results is so great, that many sociologists have opted to research outside the lab, a process also known as qualitative or field research. While there are many pros and cons to field research, most sociologists consider this method an excellent and necessary way to effectively study society.
On the other hand sociologist argued that it is due to our environment how we as human beings behave. They looked at the culture, upbringing, social patterns and relationship to pan out the way individuals behave in society.
Sociologists look at how other people influence your behavior; how the government, religion and the economy affect you and how you yourself affect others. Sociology matters because it illuminates your life. Sociology is characterized by a special skill called the sociological imagination.
I agree with the thinking of W.E.B. Du Bois in that sociologists should use their research on society to help fix the problems within society. They can observe interactions from both sides of a conflict and understand how and why the sides feel the way that they do. They also do research trying to find out what makes society “tick” and the information gathered can be used to aide in our understanding society and the people around us. In today’s times I think that sociologists are just as important as ever. We still have a limited view of our place in society and we have problems in our society that we, with our limited view, can not fix on our own. To fix our problems we need sociologists and their research to help us find the best solution.
A discipline of social science is just as much scientific as a discipline of natural science; regardless where a sociologist conducts their research. Sociology is not a study that confines their research inside labs. Instead, sociologists can be found in the natural environment managing their research. This is called field research. Field research plays a pivotal part in collecting and interpreting data gained through observations and analysis. Nonetheless, field research has its advantages and disadvantages, it comes with the territory, and sociology is no exception to the
The main focus of a sociologist is to figure out how people were developed and how they maintain. When you’re on the job, like many jobs there are hazards that you may face. As a sociologist you have many clients that go through or experience many things. All clients are different as you know, because there’s no one in this world the same. Your clients may have have a bad day and take their anger out on you as their blame.
The sociological perspective, as defined by the textbook Society: The Basics on page 2, is being able to see the general in the particular. This means that a sociologist’s goal is to observe a group of specific people, such as those who go to professional sports games, and find the similarities in their behaviors, like why some dress in outrageous costumes. A sociological perspective is important to understanding the role of a society as part of the larger world. This is called the global perspective. A sociologist is able to learn the behaviors of a group and try to see how those behaviors affect the world around them. Sociologist’s understandings helps the general public learn to evaluate things differently, understanding the cultural differences and attitudes expressed by those people.
Sociology: the scientific study of the development, structure and functioning of human society (Oxford). When the topic of discussion is sociology, Auguste Comte, the “father of positivism” would come to mind, as it was he who first coined the term “sociology” (Kreis, 2009). Comte also emphasized that the study of society must be scientific and he pushed sociologists to employ the use of qualitative methods such as observation, historical comparative analysis and experimentation. Sociological Perspective is the way in which we view sociological phenomena (Long, 2011). Among the many perspectives that exist there are three theoretical perspectives that are widely
