Chapter One: Psychology Defined Psychology is an exceptionally multifaceted field of study, regardless, it can be commonly defined as the study of mental processes and human behavior. The goals of psychology are to describe, explain, predict and control the behavior of others. Psychology incorporates an extensive range of different perspectives into its general principles as well as focuses on securing them with applied research, case studies, evaluations, etc. I first became interested in psychology when I began to watch crime shows in Grade 8. It was tremendously fascinating to absorb such bizarre yet factual information pertaining to criminal offenders, multiple types of mental disorders as well as the personality traits and situations that are gateways to such chaos.
I realized at a young age that I not only want to help and study others through my profession, I also want to understand them in more ways than one. Delving into the world of psychology as well as wanting to eventually pursue a higher level of education takes a certain kind of self-discipline. Specifically, I believe that human beings are immensely complex beings and that it is important to learn as much as possible about our behaviors and mental capabilities. My reasons for choosing psychology as a major are most definitely in sync with its definition and goals. Critical thinking skills are important to have when viewing any new data in order to really understand the date presented, instead of just trusting the biased opinion of the one presenting the data. In chapter 1 of Psychology: Core Concepts, it provides a list of six critical thinking skills that are based on six specific questions.
My interest to study psychology at university become more enhanced when I began to watch CI (crime investigation) on TV and it's through this I watched a documentary about a lady called Brigitte Harries who killed her father because she was abused by him since she was young and this affected her mental state. By watching and reading about Brigitte Harries, it made me question the human mind even more, and ask questions as to how well do we really know ourselves? This made me want to search for answers in that aspect of things. What I really enjoy most about psychology is that for every type of behaviour it has held a different argument for it.

I chose to do this for the same reason others majoring in psychology do: we have a yearning to help and provide love and comfort to people. Our motives for doing this may come from different places but our goals are all relatively the same. We just want assist people. With the education I achieve, I want to be able to guide people from all walks of life through difficult times. I want to be able to help them get their life back together again and continue living instead of getting stuck in the past, or constantly worrying about the inevitable. My ultimate dream would be to get into a good grad school after finishing my undergraduate. Whether I choose to aim for a masters or a doctorate is still to be

Psychology, according to the textbook definition, is the study of behaviour and mind. However, there is much more to it. Through psychology, we can discover the inner workings of our minds and begin to explain certain phenomena. By studying psychology, people can try to answer questions that have been asked for so long such as: Do we have free will or are we instead driven by environmental, biology, or unconscious influences? What is mental illness and how is it caused and treated? Why do we dream, and, even further, what is the context of our dream and its meaning?? How are our mental states affected by our physical states? By exploring the deep, gruesome areas of our minds,

In psychology 101 our most recent exam was on developmental psychology and how our personalities were created. It was a scantron exam in our lecture hall. We were tested on our knowledge of the scientist that brought together that certain type of psychology branch and the history of how methods have improved throughout the years of research leading to today. I used the timer strategy for studying with my flashcards that I had made while looking over our PowerPoints that were given in class. Not only did this give me a nice break so I wouldn’t get too fried out, but also it helped me remain focused and helped me to soak up the information better than just keeping it in my short-term memory.
