Leadership is dynamic, charismatic and fragile all rolled up into one. There are many words that describe leadership and leadership is defined differently by all. As I sit and type this paper I realized the date, 28 Aug. On this date 10 years ago, I was thrust into a roll that would define my leadership style. Hurricane Katrina made land fall over the city of New Orleans (NOLA) on 28 Aug 2005, this storm created havoc and destruction never before seen in the United States. I was in charge of 12 Coast Guardsman and 3 Coast Guard Airboats in which we would crew. Upon arrival in NOLA we were joined up with the 82nd Airborne Division and assigned 12 Scouts from the 2/505 platoon. These men were on the heels of returning from battle overseas and had been home for less than 30 days. Again these soldiers were thrust into action, but now they had a completely different mission. Joining forces with the Coast Guard and conducting door to door urban search and rescue was now the priority. Taking care of each other: Taking care of each other is what we need to do in our jobs. It means to carry one another if need be to make it through the tough situations. Leadership. It is something that everyone strives to achieve and is a trait that can affect every person in the smallest of ways. It is quite a unique feature, and one very hard to come by, with so many leaders nowadays in short supply. As I always like to say, “One million starts with one”. It only takes one person, only one idea, to revolutionize the way that one million people can think. A leader can open our minds and touch our hearts in ways we didn’t know possible. They can help shape the world with their ideas and the foundation of the people supporting them. Like I said before, true leaders today are in short supply. However, I can give this University a new type of leadership that has not been seen before.
The path to a personal leadership philosophy is made up of three parts. Each individual aspect is a facet of a complete whole. Much like a timeline that includes a past, present and future, my personal philosophy consists of a foundation, action, and growth. If you do not understand where your foundation of leadership came from, you will have problems acting in a leadership capacity. Also if don’t pay attention to how you are acting as a leader you cannot know in what ways you need to grow. Why should I spend the time and effort in developing myself as a leader? The Gunner’s Mate rating has a strength of just over 600 members. Maritime Force Protection Unit Kings Bay has 31 Gunner’s Mates assigned to it. I have a full five percent of the Gunner’s Mates in the Coast Guard that I lead. During my four year assignment at MFPU Kings Bay, approximately 55 Gunner’s mates (9.2 percent) will have been under my leadership. I see that as an enormous responsibility. As a young Gunner’s Mate I saw my senior leadership as people capable of effecting great change on the rating. Now today I am in the position to have that same impact.
When I think of a leader, I see someone who stands out. I see someone who is courageous and wants to take the lead. I see someone who chooses to create there own path, rather than taking the one everyone else is taking. As I learn about the qualities and the traits of leadership, I began to self evaluate on how I see myself as a leader.
I took something away from the different sources of power. Power is the capacity of potential to influence. Power can corrupt good leaders. Power, by its nature, it is powerful and tasteless like carbon monoxide. The more powerful one becomes, the more likely we are to overestimate our own mental virtue. There is position, power and personal power. Power can be more deadly than drugs. Many leaders allow power to go to their heads. They forget what and who was important to them. They allow power to consume them.
Being a leader means having the ability to compromise, the ability to listen well and to empathize. I have demonstrated leadership at work with my coworkers who are interns and are new to the job. I always show them what to do and how to do it right. I also encourage them that with time and practice they will get used to the job. At school, I always try to correct my classmates whenever I see them do something wrong. I show them how to do it right. It just never feels right to me seeing someone do something wrong and not correcting them or showing them the right thing. Some of my classes like art I have with students who are in a lower grade than me, students who are just learning to draw and paint. Most times I show them some drawing and painting techniques that would them. We also work in groups most times at school and I’ve learnt never to criticize anyones ideas. I respect people’s ideas and people themselves. The first and most important area of leadership is to show others respect and gain respect and I believe it is important to show respect whether the person deserves it or not.
Leadership is a privilege that carries with it many responsibilities to inspire others, and to direct individuals to attain the vision and goals of an organization. As an effective leader it is my job to be flexible, be an excellent communicator, be a person who leads by example, and is an individual who is committed, resourceful, and reflective. Achieving the characteristics above, I have developed a definite purpose in mind; one that is shared and modeled in and outside of my school environment. I can summarize my leadership in two words: adaptability and approachability. There exist infinite possible approaches to leadership, and there is not one single universal right. Throughout my career, I have encountered and taken note of the different leadership styles in my path and have come to realize that in order to be most effective, I must be adaptable to each unique circumstance. I have also formed my philosophy by taking into account what I consider to be toxic leadership styles. Toxicity leads to unapproachability and one cannot expect to successfully ensure the wellbeing of their subordinates if they do not feel comfortable discussing issues. Since I was in elementary school, my parents and teachers have encouraged us to be leaders in every activity. When I prepared for to application of universities, my advisors told me I should emphasize my quality of leadership to attract admissions officers. Is leadership so important for all people to be successful? What will happen if everyone desires to be a leader?
To me, it is important that you give back what you have gotten from people around you, your community, and your school. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to help others, meet new people, and also learn new skills. In one of my volunteering experiences I was able to not particularly, learn but build on my leadership skill. Leadership to most, is an arbitrary term used to define a person’s ability to direct a group of people. But what most don't know is that, leadership is not only one type of person, and the traits of leaders differ depending on each person as well. However, even with this being true, all leaders better their environment and maintain a positive environment in which makes working in a team more efficient. One example of leadership and it’s traits accompanying it as well, would be when I partook in a final exam review for psychology at Houston Community College and helped college students prepare for the exam.
My definition of leadership is to be able to support, motivate, and inspire a team to accomplish any goal at hand. I have first hand experience in the leadership role. I have been involved in group and team related projects for the majority of my life. For example, I have been on a dance team for the past eighteen years. During those years, I was a part of the University of Monroe’s Hawkline. Also on campus, I am involved in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Being involved in those groups, I have been able to learn from others about what it means to become a better leader. Leadership is defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization. To me, Leadership is so much more. Leadership is a way to shape the future and improve your community. I grew up worshiping to my father’s soccer players, leaders like Trisha Krewson and Katie Burr. These girls taught me at a young age how to lead and strive to improve the world around you. To me, one of the best ways to improve your community is through helping shape the leaders of the future. These women worked with me and showed me the value of education, athletics, pirate pride, community service, and leadership. Through opportunities like helping with bitty cheer clinic, soccer camp, and student dance teaching I have lead young girls and helped mold them into young leaders. The best part of this is seeing girls that you taught at younger age taking the initiative to help lead the generations younger than them. A leader by its meaning is one who goes first and led by example, so that others are motivated to follow. To be a leader, a person must have a deep rooted commitment to the goal that they will strive to achieve even when nobody follows! This definition is not even half the meaning for a leader especially for my leader this meaning does her no justice. Leadership is an indefinable word. There is no definitive leader because every single group needs a different leader. For example, a group of children need a different leader than a group of adults and a group of rowdy people need a different leader than a laid back group of people. A leader needs to be constantly adapting to each and every situation, assessing every little reaction and changing their approaches. As well as being constantly adapting, a leader is constantly learning new ways to handle a group and gain their attention. Leaders need always be flexible with their methods, always be ready to learn new methods, and ready to be proven wrong.
I define leadership as the ability to seek out and empower others to influence their generation and society for the greater good. A leader is a mentor. To me, a leader is someone who helps themselves and others to do the right things. They are people who build an inspiring vision of the future, motivates and inspires people to engage in that vision. They lead and work with others so that it is effective at achieving the vision. Leaders also set directions. They practice in the act of planning things out and leading a group/organization. Leaders have high management skills to guide people to a successful future, in an efficient way. Leadership is also the ability to see a problem and be the solution.
Leadership is when a person or many people step in a challenge. They are willing to take charge of the situation and help others on the way. They allow themselves to take a chance with other people and situations. Leadership is when someone follows someone who is educated and well experienced with the problem. Members of the leadership will see the vision of the whole objective, they will fix any conflict between the group or situation, and leaders are looked up to for knowledge, information, wisdom, and plans.
