Nutrition H.D. seems to be an overall healthy adolescent; however her eating habits do worry me a bit. She seems to be a little bit obsessed with what she puts into her body and her overall body image. Wanting to be healthy is not the problem. “Health care professionals are concerned not only about adolescents who are obese but also about adolescents who have unhealthy attitudes toward eating and toward their body image” (Steinberg, 2016, p. 36). It’s not that H.D. is obese, or even overweight; it’s that some of the things she was saying was leading to a belief that her body image is not strong. She mentioned ensuring she drinks a green smoothie everyday and how she rarely eats lunch at school. It is a healthy option for breakfast to enjoy a green smoothie, especially as a vegetarian, it is important to have a good source of vitamins, especially when protein is added to the smoothie. “Too many adolescents eat too much high-calorie, low-fiber food, and too few are physically active” Steinberg, 2016, p. 35). So it’s extremely healthy for H.D. to monitor her macromolecules as she is, but H.D. talked about these rituals with her body type entwine. She continually mentioned how it was important to look thin; there was almost a superiority clause with her being the healthiest. She mentioned how her friends rarely see her eat; I don’t think that is a health relationship to have with food as a senior in high school. Furthermore, this is a bad relationship to have with food

Change is good, this is something that has often been said throughout history, the mind is an open book ready to consume additional information. During the last eight weeks of class there has been many things that Foundation of Nutrition, SPHE 395, has highlighted for the students, in order to assist them in fine tuning their craft in the sports and health industry. There where numerous area that where focused on over the last eight weeks. During part two of this final assignment there we were asked to state five things that we learned during the eight weeks of learning. One of things that I must say is the fact that I know little or nothing about Nutrion before this class, but during the course there were several that would help me during my career. The five area that where important to my learning where the highlighting of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, maternal nutrition for infants, and the benefits of alcohol. After the review of this information there will be detailed concluding thoughts what I think of the class after the concluding week.
Writing down what you eat for three days shows you more about your diet then most would think. The paper, and 3 day diet diary we did was to help show us what we need to consume more of, less of, what we need to cut out of are diet, and lastly what we need to add to be a healthy individual. Wiley Plus was used to really show the breakdown of what we eat. I simply put what I wrote on paper into the Wiley food journal, wich furthermore puts everything into the catagories, and sections for you, wich was very helpful. I overall hoped my results would be decent, or average. The results I recieved were simply what I expected.
I have recently been taking a course in college called Nutrition 251, and it focuses on the principles of nutrition. In this class, I had to read a book from Michael Pollan called In the Defense of Food. As I read, I could not help but remember all the things I have eaten. Pollan explains how food changed over the years in the US and goes into great detail in how the industrialization of our food has impacted our ways of eating, poisoning us with refined and processed foods. Reading Pollan’s work made me realize that the food we eat is not actually food. Back then, food was grown and not scientifically engineered to provide humans with the nutrition we need. Just as nutrition can have drastic effects on one’s physical health, nutrition can affect one’s mental health as well. The most common mental disorders that are prevalent in numerous countries are depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The dietary pattern of the general population in many countries reflect that they are often deficient in many nutrients, especially essential vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. Deficiency in these vitamins can lead to depression.

The principles of healthy eating are the same during preconception period as well as pregnancy; the amount depends on your height, weight, physical activity and due date. The focus should be plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats. The important nutrients needed for a healthy maternal and fetal outcome are folic acid, iron, calcium, Vitamin D and protein.
Many Americans today do not track their calories or pay attention to what they are eating. As they fail to do so, they also fail to analyze what nutrients, food groups, and physically activity they receive adequately and which they lack. As I have tracked foods and beverages that I have consumed, I have been able to collect data about which food groups/nutrients I consume adequately, where the majority of my calories come from, and how my physical activity compares to that recommended.

In the past few weeks, I have attempted to exercise at least 5 times a week, challenge myself by eating more fruits and veggies, drinking more water, eating more superfoods, and getting at least 8 hours of sleep at night. I also worked on overall improving my own wellness with more meditation, winding down at night before sleeping, and dumping the processed, unhealthy foods. At the beginning, I thought this would be simple, but as days passed, I soon realized how unhealthy my usual lifestyle is and how much better I was feeling focusing more on my health. From running a mile around the neighborhood to sleeping more at night, I saw an improvement physically and mentally.

Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted to do something special in life. I was born in a small village in Mexico where public health and education were very limited. In 1996, my family and I got the opportunity to move to the United States. This move brought me closer than I had ever thought possible to accomplishing my dream of becoming a registered dietitian and working in public health nutrition. I have always valued my education because where I am from it was really difficult to study beyond middle school. Here, in the United States, I have gotten the chance to further my education beyond high school.
