The Columbian Exchange that occurred in the Western Hemisphere subjected America to extensive changes that would fundamentally change the people that lived there, the people that would come to live there, and the land itself. In fact, the America that we know today has been shaped by the events that took place hundreds of years ago during the Columbian Exchange. As European people brought their culture and values to the Americas, it started to combine and mix with the cultures and values already established there, changing both Europeans and Indians in admittedly small, but significant ways. While this can be considered a positive point of the Columbian Exchange, in its entirety, the Columbian Exchange could be considered a disaster, especially for the natives that lived in America before the Europeans came to claim it. Not only did Indians suffer at the hands of European diseases that we completely foreign to them, killing off millions and changing the Indian demographic forever, but the world that they grew to be so familiar with changed around them. When the Europeans first hit land, for the most part, they did not seek to completely obliterate the Indians that already inhabited the land. Instead, Europeans desired to convert Indians and utilize them, which inevitably led to cultures mixing both ways. For example, in the reading it states that before the Europeans had made extensive contact and established trade with the Indians, they would kill en masse to feed their
With the exchange of foods, there was also an exchange of many more life-threatening things. Diseases were spread very quickly throughout the continents because of the Columbian exchange. This caused many deaths throughout the countries. Diseases like smallpox were so life
While we can’t deny the fact that the Columbian Exchange had a lasting impact on the New World, many of its effects were negative rather than positive. The introduction of European diseases devastated the Native American population, along with the terrible conditions they were forced to live in. Additionally, the Europeans did not treat the Native tribes as people, but rather as savages who could be used for labor.
When you are sitting in a fancy restaurant in Texas, tasting a delicious steak with a nice cup of coffee, do you know that before 1492, American people don’t even know what is beef and coffee. Nowadays, people’s diet is abundant. People in every part of the world can taste the food originated in other side of the world. This is due to one of the most significant ecological events in human history called the Columbian Exchange. According to Nunn Nathan and Qian Nancy, “the Columbian Exchange refers to the exchange of diseases, ideas, food crops, and populations between the New World and the Old World following the voyage to the Americas by Christopher Columbus in 1492” (Nathan and Nancy, 2010). It was so spectacular that has left both positive and negative impacts in each side of the world.
Imagine you and your family are living in the Americas during the fifteenth century. You live an average life, until one day everything changes. Europeans come to the Americas bringing disease, slaves and weapons. They kill 85-90% of your native people; your family and friends. This is what the Columbian Exchange was like for the indigenous people of the Americas. The Columbian Exchange was detrimental because it spread diseases, it brought the slave trade to the Americas, and killed many native people.
Was the Columbian Exchange primarily a good thing or a bad thing? Though there were many good and bad results from the Columbian Exchange, overall, the Columbian Exchange was a good thing because, not only did it allow for a more even distribution of food across the globe, but it brought the world together and increased our knowledge overall as it pertains to the societies of our world.
You gave good insight on your discussion post. The Columbian Exchange was a bitter and sweet event that took place and without it the world would not be what it is today. The exchange brought much valuable products, crops, livestock, and etc., which was beneficial to the New World. Furthermore, tragedy struck very hard when the Spanish brought the smallpox disease to the naives. I would say the Indians really suffered from the diseases by dying and the remaining Indians suffered when the Europeans forced them to give up their land. The Columbian Exchange definitely made a difference in today’s society, but was also able to manipulate world good and evil.
The Columbian Exchange was a huge deal for Europe. Traders were going back and forth, from Europe to the New World, and back. This means that the traders were bringing new things, such as food and ideas. Food such as turkey, pumpkins, potatoes, corn, and more went from the Americas, or the New World, to the Old, or Europe. Things such as onions, bananas, livestock, and grains went from the Old to the New. However, one of the biggest downsides was that the Europeans brought diseases, such as smallpox, whooping cough, measles, and more to the New World. This ultimately destroyed the Native population, since they were not used to these diseases. The Columbian Exchange also brought along another horrible downside, the beginning of the Slave Trade,
Country will take the advantages from the demographic bonus if it can ensure all of the productive ages getting the suitable works. However the positive impacts for some developing contries which take a rarely good chance of demographic bonus by taking into account of plentiful natural resources that even have not been utilized yet. Poverty may be compose as a consequence of a more favourable distribution of family
The Columbian Exchange was more harmful than helpful. The reason this is true is because when the Europeans came, over time they wiped out a whole civilization. When the Europeans arrived they brought with them diseases such as the flu, malaria and smallpox. Since the Native Americans were never exposed to these diseases their immune system could not handle it and it ended up killing them. In article two it states that the disease wiped out almost half of the whole population. Even though the Europeans brought with them technology advancements this is no excuse to the permanent damage that they did. If the Europeans had never came to the Americas, the Native American civilization would still be alive today. Also the Europeans made the Native
Before 1450, there were three distinct sections of the world. Europe, Africa, and America. They all had smaller communities of people with distinct languages, crafts, diets, and traditions. However, things were about to change. All it took to dramatically alter the lives of every human on earth was one man and three ships set to sail for India. These ships intended to find a better route to trade, but got a bit more than they had bargained for. The discovery of spices, metals, and fabrics as well as a desire to find superior trade routes to acquire these goods lead to the discovery of the New World, which had a dramatic mixed impact on both the Old and New Worlds.
The Europeans exploration of the Americas has changed the course of history forever. Before the “discovery” of the Americas, the Eastern world was entirely separated from the West. People in Europe, Africa, and Asia traded exclusively amongst themselves, and likewise in the Americas. After the Spanish and the Portuguese had explored and claimed much of the new world, things began to change considerably. The new world became a colony for European nations to provide raw materials for them and help their economies. This affected the lives of many natives who had already been living in the Americas. Many were killed by the diseases the Europeans brought over, and some were even killed by the Europeans for sport. Despite these negative outcomes, there were some good effects from this. The Europeans earned many new goods, such as pineapples, potatoes, turkeys, and tomatoes. The Europeans also brought over some goods, such as many types of livestock (cattle, horses, and chickens) as well as some fruit and
The Columbian Exchange began soon after Christopher Columbus returned from his voyage to the Americas, which he believed to be India. As he returned to Spain, the Columbian Exchange soon began with the exchange of items from the Old to the New World. Some of which brought negative and positive effects to the various regions of the Old and New World. Of the various items traded, sugar was among the items brought from the Old to the New World, specifically to the Americas. Due to this new crop a new economy began. For the Europeans, because they were able to set up the sugar plantations due to the decreased population brought on by disease, their settlements were able to flourish.
The Columbian exchange for its many reasons had a lot of positive affect’s on the new world. The reason why it’s mainly positive, because of growth of the agriculture and livestock trades. There are many pros and cons to the Columbian Exchange. A pro of the Columbian Exchange is that many goods were exchanged between the Americas and Europe. Another good thing about the Columbian Exchange is that corn and potatoes were cheap to grow and helped people live longer lives. Horses were also introduced to the Americas which made Native American life much easier. The Columbian exchange not just only provided food crops, but also of livestock used for the purposes of food, clothing, and energy. Many of the livestock where first generation horses,
The Columbian Exchange had a negative and positive impact on both the Europeans and the American Indians. With the exchange of foods, animals, plants, culture, and many other things these people were able to develop new ways of life on both sides of the world. The people throughout Europe were able to benefit from wheat, grain and rye. They had animals such as horses that were able to help them work, travel, and of course their meat was used for food.
The Columbian Exchange brought many positive and negative aspects globally. Both were mostly having to do with trade and culture, and provided effects to the world that are still around even today. In the exchange, many things were traded between regions some being positive. Many animals and plants were traded.
