a. Describe valid funding source and justification for how the program plan meets the requirements of the grant
The funding source is an NIH Research Project Grant Program (R01). An R01 grant provides support for up to 5 years and a modular budget format allows to request up to $250,000 per year in direct costs. This provided support for health-related research and development based on the mission of the NIH. Since the NIH is comprised of Institutes and Centers it has the ability to support a specified and a circumscribed project in an area of interest- in this case, Research on the Health of

Overview of the infrastructure that is relevant to the program (may include public health agencies, non-governmental organizations, school systems, healthcare systems/facilities, faith-based groups, law enforcement agencies, etc.)
Washington, DC ha among the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in the United States. By the end of 2007, more than 15,000 people were living with HIV (PLWH) and AIDS in D.C., representing roughly 3 percent of the adult resident- a prevalence rate similar to Nigeria and the Congo in Africa. A number of factors have contributed to the severity of the epidemic. There is a high proportion of residents in populations at increased risk for HIV infection, especially men who have sex with men (MSM).
All public health programs depend on the presence of infrastructure. The infrastructure in Washington, DC is vast. Being the nation’s capital in some ways, created the epicenter for several well-known public health agencies and organizations. For instance, the Whitman-Walker Health Foundation, Health HIV, One Medical, The DC Center, The George Washington University, as well as government initiatives (Department of Health and Human Services).

|1.1 Analyse reasons why it may be necessary to raise awareness of health issues? |
According to recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 1.2 million individuals in the United States have HIV (about 14 percent of which are unaware of their infection and another 1.1 million have progressed to AIDS. Over the past decade, the number of HIV cases in the US has increased, however, the annual number of cases remains stable at about 50, 000 new cases per year. Within these estimates, certain groups tend to carry the burden of these disease, particularly the gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with men (MSM) and among race/ethnic groups, Blacks/African American males remain disproportionately affected. (CDC)
According to Koumans et. al (2005), there have not been any studies conducted on STD education or services provided by higher education institutions here in the U.S. However, several studies demonstrate that misinformation and lack of educational resources contribute to risky sexual behavior which can lead to STDs (Wyatt & Oswalt, 2014).Therefore, it is imperative that universities and colleges find ways to increase awareness of sexual health services available for students on campus.
The public health system is based on ten essentials the first of those essentials is to Monitor health status in order to identify and solve community health problems. This is the primary role of the CDC. The CDC provides the backbone to the public health system by supporting public health agencies. This is accomplished through several different programs such as the CDC WONDER. CDC WONDER or Wide-ranging On-line Data for Epidemiologic Research is a detailed system to assist public health professionals by providing them with action-oriented information. Information can be accessed quickly and easily to help design and implement prevention strategies and allocate resources (Friede & Ory, 1993). CDC WONDER simplifies data management obtained through surveillance systems giving access to state and local health

I am writing to inform you of my intent to participate in the NIH Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award program as a trainee. Having recently graduated magna cum laude with bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, I am eager to use my knowledge and passion to contribute to the health sciences. The IRTA program at the NIH appears to be an ideal opportunity for me to contribute to the health sciences as well as develop personally as a future physician. While I admire the diversity of research the NIH is conducting, I am most strongly drawn to the mentorship provided through the IRTA program.
The prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases is no doubt imperative to the well-being of a society, even more so, on college campuses where the risk of communicability is greatest and can even affect loved ones and close friends. This hazard is further increased within Historically Black Colleges and Universities due to less consideration given to the risk associated with having intercourse. This is mainly caused by a lack of awareness in regard to STD's and their transmission, with the most prevalent cases involving HIV and AIDS. The problem lies within societal and cultural risks. Students at HBCU's tend to have unprotected sex and often times not tell their partners if they are carrying a disease because they are either afraid to
“To achieve the National HIV/AIDS Strategy for the United States goal of reducing the number of persons who become infected with HIV, further improvements in the prevalence of behaviors that contribute to HIV infection among young persons are needed. Renewed educational efforts that reach all students before risk behaviors are initiated and that seek to delay the onset of sexual activity, increase condom use among students who are sexually active, and decrease injection drug use are warranted.” (p.
Results from the study were disheartening yet astounding. Per the information collected by the CDC, HIV is prevalent in underserved areas, urban areas. Unfortunately, those who tend to be saturated by minority populations. The groups mostly impacted included those who are African American and Hispanic populations. Approximately 44 percent of those who are newly infected are African Americans while 40 percent of those who currently live with HIV are African Americans (CDC, 2010). Twenty percent of all new persons living with HIV are from the Hispanic population (CDC, 2010). Sadly, these are the subgroups who are in the inner
The Human Immune-deficiency Virus is an epidemic that has devastated the world since its discovery in the year 1981. Over 30 million people in the US have succumbed to the epidemic while close to 1.1 million people are now living with the disease. Young people in the US are the most vulnerable group and are continually at high risk of contracting HIV and AIDS. About 39% of reported HIV cases are among youths aged between 13-29 years (Granich et al. 2011). Various studies have shown that homosexual and bisexual youth are at high risk. It is, therefore, important to adopt programs that will assist them to reduce those sexual behaviors that can lead to contracting the disease. It becomes a necessity to
The solutions offered here will not be without barriers and issues. Some seem simple and can be immediately implemented. Others may take some time, effort and involve additional recourses. While others will require much effort, partnerships and be considered long term goals. As we look at each, we must first lay the ground work by showing the necessity and instill a since of urgency. Otherwise, these programs may be viewed as options as opposed to necessities and requirements. Due to this, one must outline an agenda which includes the projected outcomes coupled with scheduled due-dates. This will allow the projects to stay on track while being able to celebrate the small accomplishments, which helps to keep all parties involved.
Even the capital of the most powerful country in the world has a problem with AIDS. In fact, Washington, DC has a major problem with this disease. The rate of new AIDS cases in the District and its surrounding areas is twelve times
