History
In 1975 two best friends from Seattle, Bill Gates, and Paul G. Allen formed the company Microsoft. The company was founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico when Gates and Allen were only 19 and 22. The company began by converting and refining BASIC (a mainframe computer language) and creating other programming languages. In 1980, the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) asked Microsoft to develop the operating system for their first personal computer. Microsoft then bought another operating system from a company, altered it and named it the MS-DOS. Their operating system was released on the IBM PC in 1981, which lead to most manufacturers using MS-DOS as their devices ' operating system. By the early 1990 's, Microsoft sold well over 100 million copies
"The company that actually made the world realize the magic of software, and made computing accessible to almost everyone on the planet, is Microsoft," according to Business Insider. Through their invention of a user-friendly operating system, Microsoft helped make personal computers both cheaper and more useful. The rise of affordable computers with word processing, data storage, and programmability features led to the widespread use of computers in schools, which laid the foundation for the growth of computer science, thereby giving rise to an explosion of new technology. In addition to transforming education, Microsoft's products transformed business. Microsoft's Office Suite and Azure cloud platform have fueled small business growth through the use of Excel spreadsheets for budgeting, PowerPoint for presentations, and Azure for data connectivity. According to NetMarketShare, Windows holds 91.53 percent of the desktop market share. This overwhelming market share demonstrates how Microsoft influences the way the world does business. With the Xbox gaming system, Microsoft made a profitable leap from business to entertainment. Microsoft's Xbox systems are the most popular game consoles in the world, poised to become even more popular as China has ended its ban on foreign gaming systems. Due to the Xbox's price point, ability to run PS3 games, and live features,
Microsoft was founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen from Seattle, and incorporated in 1981 (Liquori, 2011). Being the number one software company in the world Microsoft employs about 52,000 people working full-time, 21,000 in product research and development, 23,500 in sales, marketing, and support, 2,200 in manufacturing and distribution, and 4,000 in finance and administration. The following report will include an analysis of financial reports, income statements, Balance sheets, and cash flow statements (Liquori, 2011).
Microsoft has grown into an enormous and powerful corporation by a combination of aggressive business practices and having written operating systems (DOS and Windows) for personal computers. From operating systems it branched out into other software which has, along with the operating system, become something of an industry standard.
Microsoft was founded in 1975, and is the worldwide leader in software, services, and solutions (Career). Microsoft is proud to offer great products and employ outstanding people. Previous Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer once said, “There are many things that are true about Microsoft. We have big goals, big dreams, and big aspirations for the future. We are both competitive with our products and in the way we attract and retain talent. For me, the most important factor is competition for talent, because I know our success comes from the people who work here” (Foley).
The Microsoft Corporation (MS) is a world renowned, multinational computer technology and software company. The company invented the operating system Windows and it is the most popular operating system in the world (Computer Hope, 2017). Microsoft is highly innovative and continuously strives to make technological advances in the computer software industry.
Microsoft Corporation was founded by William H. Gates III also known as Bill Gates and Paul G. Allen in 1975. Since their inception they have been credited for developing various operating systems to coordinate with the personal computer (PC). “Microsoft possesses a dominant, persistent, and increasing share of the world- wide market for Intel-compatible PC operating systems. Every year for the last decade, Microsoft 's share of the market for Intel-compatible PC operating systems has stood above ninety percent. For the last couple of years the figure has been at least ninety-five percent, and analysts project that the share will climb even higher over the next few years (Justice).” Microsoft has also
In 1975, Allen and Gates started marketing a BASIC programming language translator with their newly founded company Microsoft (“Paul Allen” Famous entrepreneurs). Soon, through deals with other emerging companies such as Apple and Commodore, Allen had arranged for their company to purchase an operating system called Q-DOS for $50,000 (“Paul Allen” Biography). The duo reinvented the operating system and renamed it MS-DOS the gave exclusive rights of MS-DOS to a personal computer company called IBM, who had originally commissioned the OS.
Microsoft is also one of the best-known companies in the world, and its brand awareness is very high, as virtually everyone who has heard of a computer has heard of Microsoft.
After some opportunities and time passed, in 1975 the two decided to invent Micro-Soft, a blend of a microcomputer and a software (Biography). Later in Microsoft’s timeline, people were not buying it as much once they figured out that they could share it with friends for free. Gates caught on to this and wrote an open letter that basically informed that sharing the software was just like stealing it. Most people did not agree with him, but he continued to be determined and when accused or unfair business practice, he threatened with innovation. Gates and Allen soon broke away from MITS and were on their own with Microsoft. This did not discourage Bill; he took it on as a challenge and he moved Microsoft to Washington in 1978. Microsoft grew and began to rise in worth grossing $2.5 million in 1978 when Bill was only 23. The rise of Microsoft began when the IBM was in need of a software to run their forthcoming PC. Although he had not come up with and operating system that could run IBM’s new PC, he bought a operating system that was similar to what IBM needed and sold it to them for the price he bought it for. This made Microsoft more valuable and revenue rose from $4 million to $16 million between the years 1978 and 1981. Soon after this, Bill shot out the idea of
Microsoft capitalized on the need for an operating system for the blossoming personal computer industry. Gates developed the BASIC programming language in the late 1970s, but the DOS operating system created for the IBM personal computer in the early 1980s solidified Microsoft's position. Teaming with IBM on additional projects, Gates and his team also developed a series of languages for new IBM systems: BASIC, FORTRAN, COBOL, and Pascal. As IBM computers grew faster and more efficient in the late 1980s, Microsoft continued to upgrade the renamed
Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen on April 4, 1974 in New Mexico. When starting the company neither realized the impact they would have on the world. The companies first home software was Xenix, although it failed this led to developing MS-DOS for the IBM- PC. Xenix was also the base for Microsoft developing its first word processor. The beginning of Microsoft Inc. started with Bill Gates and Paul Allen writing computer program code for local businesses and municipalities. In 1975 they were inspired by an issue of Popular Electronics that showed the new Altair microcomputer kit, manufactured by MITS Computer. Bill Gates and Paul Allen wrote a version of BASIC, a computer programming language, for the machine. Later that year Bill Gates left Harvard University to work full time developing programming languages for the Altair, and he and Paul Allen relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to be near MITS Computer, where Paul Allen took a position as director of software development. Bill Gates and Paul Allen named their partnership Micro-soft (Microsoft
