One would think that high school English teachers prepare you for college English courses. However, Maria P. Rey disagrees with this in many ways. Rey announces early on in her letter that she wants high school teachers, "... to re-evaluate not only the method of teaching but more importantly the substance of what is taught."(Rey 2009) I agree with Rey in that teachers should reconsider the content of what is taught to students because my college experience has confirmed it. In college writing, I soon learned that I was not prepared for what was expected of me. On the other hand, the method of the five paragraph essay gave me a formula to begin my writing, but Rey contends that this method could keep writers "at a very elementary level of writing."(Rey
Unteaching The Five- Paragraph essay by Marie Foley is a light hearted but argumentive piece focusing on the way most school aged children are taught to write. Foley's main point comes down to the very first words in the essay; “The five-paragraph formula confuses and alienates students and undermines our most basic goals as writing instructors." Foley believes that by teaching children to write in a formulated manner we are not letting them explore and learn through their own writing. We are instead giving them the freedom to discontinue the thought process once they feel that the essay they have produced meets the formula standards they have been kept to, and refuse to part with.
Julia Alvarez is an acclaimed American-Dominican poet and author. She has written many successful books and poems, many of which reflect directly on her life and personal experiences. Because of Alvarez’s American-Dominican background, her poems display diverse, cultural themes. These include what it is like to be American and Dominican and the struggles of moving from the Dominican Republic to the United States. Alvarez has received praise for her ability to write a wide variety of styles, including poems, children's books, young adult novels, and essays. Her success, however, has come from her poetry collections, like Homecoming. These collections show her life in the Dominican Republic and her transition to the United States.
In the article “Unteaching the Five Paragraph Essay”, Marie Foley intere that the five paragraph essay format is blameworthy of high school graduate unpreparedness for college coursework and the need of remedial classes. Foley stated that “Many college freshman enter composition course alienated from writing”(P.2) Foley also claim that “teaching the five paragraph formula this harms student in some fundamental ways….i'll-preparing them for academic and real world writing”(P.3) This paper is going to analyse Marie foley article by brake down the reason and problem behind the Five paragraph essay.

In “Breaking the Five-Paragraph-Theme Barrier” professor Thomas Nunnally describes his experience teaching the popular writing tool. The five-paragraph theme requires an introductory paragraph, three middle paragraphs that each have their own ideas, and a concluding paragraph. Nunnally believes that this writing model should only be used as a writing tool and not the backbone to all essays (Nunnally). I agree with Nunnally’s stance, but also think that by the age of sixteen, students should no longer be given the opportunity to rely on the model for writing opportunities. **

I had the opportunity to interview Mrs. Maria G. Rivera. She Is a hardworking mother who came to the united states at the age of 13 since then she hasn't left. She has no desire of going back to Mexico and considers America home. I had the chance to dig deep into her early life history, which I will talk about in the next paragraph. I learned how much she values her children and how much she cares for them, which Is the reason why she decided to make a move and come to the United States because she was thinking of her future kids and didn't want them to experience the harsh life she lived when being a young girl.

Shortly after Carlos's designation, authorities in Guerrero suspended classes for 5 municipalities.[17] Statewide, 507 shelters were opened, including 98 in Acapulco.[18] The ports of Acapulco and Zihuatanejo were closed for navigation on June 13 and swimming in the ocean was banned in the former.[19][20] After Carlos became a hurricane, officials activated a red alert—the equivalent of a hurricane warning—in southwestern Guerrero, while a yellow alert, similar to a tropical storm warning, was declared for Michoacan and the rest of Guerrero.
