Leadership In the changing business environment, leaders of all organisations may face unprecedented uncertainty, especially the technology advancement and changes among the employees. To survive and succeed, leaders should have some necessary attributes. Meanwhile, some changes for leadership skills have to be made to confront the challenges. Two reports( Ladkin & Weber 2011; Cappelli et al. 2010) and a reflection (Useem 2010) discuss current business leadership issues in a global business environment . While in the article “Leadership Issues and Challenges in the Tourism Industry: A Hong Kong Perspective”, which focuses on Hong Kong business leaders, the author Ladkin & Weber have a different overall position compared to the …show more content…
argue that the leader should have ability to cope with uncertainty’ , ‘ to persistently improvise around obstacles’ (P.97). All the writers take the similar viewpoint that the leaders should have the ability to communicate with employees effectively so that they will be able to guide and inspire subordinates. Capelli et al. point out ‘empowering through communication’ (P.95) and give the example of Indian companies. They believe human capital is the motivation of the business companies. And the other specific ways are ‘creating a sense of mission’ (P.94), ‘Engaging through transparency and accountability’ (P.94), ‘Investing in training’ (P.95). Similarly, Useem states that the leaders should empower employees by giving them more responsibility, also ‘Convey strategic intention’ (P.77) tell them what to do but now how. In contrast, Ladkin & Weber do not discuss empowerment, rather inspiring them through passion. He also states that the communication between employees and customers is important. All three articles discuss mission and vision of leaders. Ladkin & Weber claimed leaders need training and communication, they need long-term view for objective and ‘company vision’ (P.278). By contrast, Useem
Leadership is difficult to define. Leadership is a concept that probably carries many different reactions with many different kinds of people. However, we all feel we know good leadership when we see it, and we can often tell when good leadership is missing by the way a team or organization struggles without it. Ask yourself, Are you willing to do absolutely anything for the common good for your employer, your teammate, your family, your friend?
I held an elected leadership position every year of my high school career. As a junior, I lead a yearlong
Leaders must be able to communicate effectively especially when implementing change within the organization. They must be able to know how to communicate differently with each worker in ways that is reachable. Being goal oriented and sharing the vision with team mates allow an easier transition. According to Denton (1996). Once management has a clear vision or foresight, they can next work on obtaining commitment and communicating the
|A con of paternalistic leadership is that the selling only lasts as long as you are on the phone or are around for, and some candidates/people are not easy|
When a long standing CEO resigns after a successful run with the company, he or she leaves the business in the hunt for a new chief executive officer, and theoretically I am in the race amongst candidates in an internal promotion campaign. Through many grueling interviews, with some being panel interviews with other senior company officials, video chat interviews, and non-directive interviews, I was vetted and selected amongst a very small pool of candidates, all of which were chief officers in the firm. With my new found career path, I am now held responsible for all of the firm’s actions, from hiring to firing people, finding new ways to improve the company’s performance amongst the competition, all while keeping employees motivated to

The landscape of business has changed in the past 20 years. The make-up in the demographics of staff members as well as the geographical location of those team members has broadened (Suk Bong, Kihwan, & Seung-Wan, 2017). To remain competitive in today’s business environment leadership styles, as well as a new perspective in how to lead, must take place (Franco & Haase, 2017). Leadership effectiveness is a critical concern in world business, social problems, human resource management and development, all effect employees of a company (Warrick, 2011). How to perform as an active leader efficiently in today’s increasingly tough business market is vital to all business and workforce management.
John Wooden says,” the most powerful leadership tool you have is you’re own personal example.” Personally, a leader is one who serves others and in fact, I fit this position as I have led over 150 kids from my church to a charity event and organized them into 36 groups in 3 different locations during the Harvey trauma. This encounter has taught me a lot of problem solving skills as many of the locations did not have the required supplies to do the job. With my engineering skills, I was able to construct replacement tools to do the same job. For example, a chisel was not present at the site and we had to take out the soggy flood-water filled laminate, so I bent a pipe and was able to create a chisel out of it so that the work would go on. I also learned through this experience to have a positive attitude even when things don’t go as planned, as a negative attitude slows down the efficiency of the work. I was able to practice this lesson in my daily life and thus, create a charismatic personality. Last year, I was chosen to represent my church and attend the National Orthodox leadership conference and I learned very unique and strong leadership methods. I was one of the 20 kids nationally who were able to attend this conference because of my strong leadership skills. Through this conference, I was able to strengthen my leadership skills. Also, I was one of the representatives who got the privilege to go to the American Red Cross Leadership Conference from our Elkins High School Red Cross Club. There, I was able to strengthen my teamwork and leadership skills and transform into a strong leader that affects the society positively. I volunteer and serve in various community services like the Houston Food Bank to the American Red Cross with over 600 volunteer hours. I was also chosen last year to take part in the Houston Methodist Internship program where I was called to respond to the needs of the patients and act accordingly. I felt the need to try my best and work as hard as I can in this internship program as excellence in everything I do is one of my many morals. For example, if I observed that a patient had difficulty walking, I would get a wheelchair and assist them in going to their destination. Because of
Hoch and Morgeson (2014) offer another problem which arises in leadership studies; studies are primarily completed by focusing on one leadership source, not allowing for adequate comparison between sources of leadership. While, as mentioned above, studies have not found a common physical or personality characteristics between leaders, Bennis (1992) states that there is, in fact, something leaders have in common; leaders have a vision. Colin Powell, when speaking at the 2013 Global Leadership Summit, said that good leaders have a vision and are constantly repeating and guiding others to achieve that vision (GLS 2013). Bill Hybles (GLS 2013), the founder of the Global Leadership Summit, continues this thought and said that the first goal of a leader is to inspire vision. He also states that when a leader has a vision of “here to there”, the leader must be able to inspire a team to make the transitions from “here to there” to reach the goals of the vision or the vision will die.
Leaders need to be able to have and project their expertise in their respective field. Leaders have a vision for the future that they have to inspire their subordinates to strive towards. In order for that to happen, leaders must show that they understand the problem space of their vision and are able to navigate any obstacles which will come up. A leader who doesn’t understand their domain will have to completely rely on outside information, and won’t be able to take advantage of their ability to separate the wheat from the chaff in information.
Effective leadership is nuanced. It’s ambiguous. It takes the most precise amounts of pride and humility, confidence and skepticism... It’s no wonder the bookstores and consulting firms thrive covering the topic. You may think that you're not equipped to face the seemingly interminable mountain of becoming an effective leader, but let me tell you: you're a superhero. You're a leader. You've got this.

Everyone has probably played the game “Follow the Leader” back in elementary school. It is a game where the leader stands in front of the line. He or she can say or do anything, and her followers (standing in a straight line behind her) must repeat exactly the same thing he or she does or says. Whoever was picked to be the leader must have loved the experience because one had the freedom to do whatever they please, while others followed miserably or happily depending on what the leader is saying or doing. However, if one was the follower, one would wait anxiously to be the next chosen leader. At the same time, one must somehow express his or her self in a fashion that will make them stand out from the rest of the students. Whether he or
These are the needs that are required by every employee and they are also the easiest for the organisation to provide. The top need is the desire for self-actualization; this is also the hardest need to provide for the employee. Maslow’s thoughts were that self-actualized people are rare.
leadership is not only about the motivation it’s all about the capacity, the capacity of leaders to listen and to observe, to use their expertise and efficiencies in all levels of decision-making process, to establish motivational level and to articulate their own value and visions clearly to the employees but not to impose them, just make
