Dahmer was a homosexual, only choosing young men as his victims. He was diagnosed early in life with borderline personality disorder, a psychopathic disorder, and schizotypal personality disorder. Despite his major mental illnesses he was declared sane at his trial. Dahmer would go to gay bars, bus stops, and shopping malls to try and pick up someone to take home with him. As David Nichols mentioned from Matthews and Springer, “he presented himself to potential victims with flattery, for example, ‘Hi, I'm Jeff. I like the way you dance,’ or ‘You're the nicest guy I've met in Milwaukee’” (244). He would make people feel appreciated so he would be able to appeal to his victims. His first kill was when he was 18 years old, a guy he picked up that was hitchhiking and took him back to his place to do sexual acts, struck him with a barbell that killed him (“Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer Part 01 of 19” 3). After these two life changing events Dahmer seemed to have changed becoming more insular and lacking confidence. By the age of fourteen he began having thoughts of killing people and necrophilia. Necrophilia is wanting to have sexual intercourse with a corpse. Many believed that his parents divorce acted as a catalyst for Dahmer to begin acting on his thoughts of murder.
