David Goldberg, once said, "All of our development since the world war 2 has been centered on the car, and that will have to change." The amount of congestion in certain parts of the world has been intensifying smog making them the most populated places in the world. In this type of world that we are living it is crucial that we take a look into a society without cars and understand what it is like to live in that type of society, know what the people go through everyday surviving without a car and the positive effects that it would have on us.
Cars have made the human population lazy in way. "Millions of Colombians hiked, biked, skated or took buses to work during the car-free day...", Because of modern day technology, Now people just hop in a car not really thinking about what it's doing to our environment. In countries like Germany they have made it harder to own and maintain a car. Elizabeth Rosenthal elicits in “In German Suburbs ,Life Goes on Without Cars.” that “ 70 percent of Vauban’s families do not own cars and 57 percent sold their cars to move here.” This quote shows that more people would much rather live in a wholesome environment than a polluted place.

Pollution right now is extremely high. Mr. Sivak's a professor of the university of Michigan's transportation research institute states that, " I was curious about what kind of people drove, but young people don't really car. A car is just a means from getting from A to B when BART doesn't work" (Elisabeth Rosenthal 5)
This just proves that most of the general human population doesn't care about the Earth
Three quarters of emissions in 2004 were coming from road traffic (Woodcock, p.1930, 2009). Emissions used from transportation are forecasted to increase from the year 2007-2030 by about 80% according to studies done by James Woodcock who is currently studying climate change and health from car fuels (Woodcock, p.1930, 2009). This is due to the fact that the emissions from vehicles are increasing significantly and are higher than any other energy fragment (Woodcock, p.1930, 2009). The only way to lower this percentage is to decrease the number of individual automobiles on the road and increase the number of public transit systems, starting long distance walking to work or school, carpooling or even biking to destinations. These principles would
With a declining or no use of cars can result in the reduction of pollution quite tremendously. They can by reducing the greenhouse effect. As the author reports in the article, “In German Suburb Life Goes On Without Care” by Elisabeth Rosenthal, “Passenger cars are responsible for 12 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe… and up to 50 percent in some car-intensive areas in the United States.” Therefore, with cars being a leading factor of greenhouse gas emissions, reducing their usage would have a positive effect on the environment. After days of near-record pollution,
Is the automobile still a good thing for America? There’s been a debate going on about whether the automobile is still good for America. I’m not very smart but I do know one thing, it’s not. Rates of car ownership peaked in 2006 and are now declining. The automobile is definitely not good for America. Driving cars pollute the environment, also causes many car crashes, and it cost a lot to maintain the car, here’s why.
Automobiles create many problems for the environment and the government. Pollution is created from cars, and people are dying from cancer and heart
In our real lives, the society usually improves through science. In the article “Cars and Their Enemies” wrote by James Q. Wilson, he talks about how cars bring people conveniences and improve the society. He also states that car makes people’s lives freer and more pleasurable (Wilson ). As everybody know, the United States is a country on wheels, especially in Southern California. Cars are very important for a person who lives in the suburbs of Southern California, students need them to go to school, ladies need it to go to the mall, and guys need it to go to gym. Otherwise, people will have to limit the chooses of their house. Moreover, Wilson also mentions that people always love to choose transportation based on individual instead of social preferences. In other words, cars provide convenient living and option to people, and this is what science brings to people. We should support and respect science instead of adopt a hostile attitude towards science because of what it did to
Over time vehicles have become a huge cause of pollution and global warming. As years have passed by vehicles have been designed to be environmentally friendly. This is only happened for the vehicles that are everyday vehicles. Most of those vehicles are still not fully efficient due to the inability of affording a new car. Racing in the biggest thing that is in need of finding a way to limit it to release less pollution.
Automobiles are often criticized for being gas-guzzling machines that are depleting our ozone and putting our world at risk. Their dependency on fossil fuels is rightly under fire for social, economic, political, and environmental reasons; none of which bring a positive connotation to the topic of automobiles. A less criticized topic, but arguably a more prominent issue, is our dependency on them. There are infrastructure ‘improvements’ constantly being made within cities to accommodate the personal automobile. Our willingness to use cars with no recognition of the effects that they have on our surroundings speaks to the culture and time we live in. Modern cities were birthed from the automobile but nurtured by its inhabitants.
In the past three days, I have observed as well as recorded my travel behavior. I rely heavily upon an automobile when trying to get around and very rarely do I take a more sustainable mode of transportation. In the six places I traveled this past week, I have driven a car for more than 75% of the time. Looking back,
E.B. White wrote in “Fro-Joy”, “everything in life is somewhere else, and you get there in a car”, which could not be any truer (White). The first minute and nineteen seconds of the film, Who Killed the Electric Car, reported that “two million new cars are sold in California each year” (Who). As a society, the means of transportation is everything. Buses and trains can be unreliable the only sure way of transporting yourself to point A to point B is with a car. In the United States the automobile addiction is rising, it is recorded that the “national average of 2.28 vehicles per household” (Study). Inflating gas prices, deepening complexity in the Middle East, and aggressive rate of global warming is threatening the lives of generations
Have you ever thought about way back when there wasn’t any cars? Think about all the things cars do for us. I am strong favor that cars should stay central in Americans lives.
Vehicular transportation has changed the way the world works. When walking and riding horses was the primary mode of transportation, with rare travel between cities, communities could be small and few. Once buggies and other animal-drawn vehicles came around, cities were able to expand. Suburbia emerged surrounding cities in order for citizens to chase the American Dream, with long driveways, sprawling yards, and picket fences, only made possible with the invention of motorized vehicles. This was no problem when no one knew the harmful effects of carbon emissions or acknowledged the long-term disadvantages to minimal walking and biking. Because of this infatuation with the wide-open suburbs, downtown cities deteriorated. Although cities are
“Automobiles have a large impact on the quality of our environment and public health. Automobile use affects virtually every aspect of environmental quality - including noise levels, air quality, water pollution, and urban sprawl. Ninety percent of the environmental impact of automobiles occurs through the operation of the cars: about 10 percent from the production, raw materials and disposal of
Wilson, author of Car and Their Enemies, would respond in absolute horror. Wilson would not like the way citizens are doing think open mindedly rather than technologically. He would think it is far too much and too dangerous to have set and ordered items at certain times making it easy to mess up and ruin it all. Wilson disagree with the thought for nature with the escapable technology of the modern world by being excited and scared of what it could bring, the production of privacy mobiles, and the raise in income due to company’s steady production of goods. Bringing citizens together from a far in less amount and more comfortable amount of time is ideal, but however, not ideal for Wilson . Being able to have possession of a private motor vehicle means the world to many. The raise in money being circulated would be huge for workers and business owners that would rarely get business. The exploration into new town or places for business’s and company would be ideal for citizens would want to stay in town of their own without sacrificing anything. However, the creation of automobiles would result , in Wilson’s mind, as a huge loss.
E. B. White once stated “ Everything in life is somewhere else, and you get there in a car.” Since 95 percent of American households have a car, this statement must be factual . Cars provide some of the necessities in life: jobs, convenience, and affordability.
Automobiles are a major producer of greenhouse gas. One gallon of fuel burned puts five pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Let’s say that an average car gets 25 miles to the gallon, and that car has a ten gallon tank. Every time a car gets filled up with gas, another fifty pounds of carbon dioxide have been put back into the atmosphere, and that is just one car. The automobile industry is very important to the world economy, so I am not saying that we should stop making cars, but there are other solutions. The recent trend of hybrid electric cars that get up to fifty miles to the gallon are becoming more popular. Also public transportation is very important. City dwellers that live downtown, do not need to drive their cars to work. Every major city has a form of public transportation that can get anyone around the city, and for that gallon of gas a bus burns the same five pounds reaches the atmosphere, but instead of one
