The Impulsive Actions of Romeo and Juliet. The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, known by many as a love story between two very unfortunate people but when looked under the microscope, the true nature of the characters can be seen. Romeo and Juliet’s love could’ve succeeded if they had thought about what they were doing before actually doing it; instead, they based their actions on their emotions rather than reason. Romeo and Juliet’s impulsive nature is caused by their teenage brains. From the story, the reader can gather that Juliet is thirteen and can surmise that Romeo is around the age of seventeen; “She hath not seen the change of fourteen years” (Act I. Scene II. 9). For example, Juliet was very reasonable when she feared the consequences of drinking the poison. “What if it be a poison which the Friar/ subtly hath ministered to have me dead… Romeo, I come! This do I drink to thee” (Act IV. Scene III. 24- 58). At the times in which Romeo and Juliet used reasoning when deciding their actions, they had an incentive; and as research states, teens are more prone to use reasoning when making decisions when they have an incentive. As stated in Laura Sanders post, teenagers take more time than adults when making thorough and complicated decisions if there is some sort of incentive (Teen keep cool for thoughtful choices). The incentives in the play that provoked this thorough thinking in Romeo and Juliet is their undying “love” for each other, and this is what causes them to take such drastic measures. For example, Juliet decides to drink the poison because it provides a solution in order for her to obtain the prize of being with Romeo, also Juliet’s incentive that causes her to rethink her drinking the poison is that she fears for her life. Now as stated before, Romeo’s and Juliet’s actions are what mainly drive the plot of the story and if they had chosen differently, their story would’ve ended happily. Some people might argue that that just is not the truth since there are other plot devices that would cause Romeo and Juliet
The exquisite tale of Romeo and Juliet has come through the last 4 centuries teaching people to not force love and not to be too impulsive. The flaws that were strung throughout the tale with the repetition of Romeo and Juliet’s actions ultimately resulted in their deaths. Romeo and Juliet were impulsive, Romeo’s strong love for Juliet, and Romeo and Juliet were more provoked with their hearts than their heads that led to their deaths caused by these fatal flaws.
The story Romeo and Juliet is a story written by William Shakespeare and is mainly about rushed love and making hasty decisions that leads to heave consequences. The story mostly revolves around main characters Romeo and Juliet. Romeo is handsome, intelligent, and sensitive. Though a little immature. He lives in the middle of a violent feud between his family and the Capulets, all though Romeo gets himself in fight and arguments he’s not interested in violence. And Juliet is 13 years old and the daughter of Capulet and Lady Capulet. Her character at first appears to be quiet, shy and innocent. She then meets Romeo and shows she is not as shy and innocent as we think. Romeo Juliet is overlooked as a love story and it's more than that Romeo and Juliet love is rushed . For example While most good relationships take years to build, Romeo and Juliet met two hours before they decided to get married, romeo and Juliet fell in “deep love“ for no other reason but looks and appearances. This is proven on many occasions threw out the story, for example at the feast when Romeo thinks Juliet are attractive, just for that one reason he approaches her and lands a kiss. “My only love sprung from my only hate!” Said juliet indicating that she already loves romeo after the first time they met (1.5.138). This type of fowl rushed love, no one knew about their love. This causes a lot of potentially avoidable problems.
No matter how hard or dangerous it is they are incessant in their attempts. The most risky action that Juliet has done was drink the potion after which numerous things could go wrong. She states, “What if this mixture do not work at all?...What if it be a poison....How if, when I am laid into the tomb I wake before the time that Romeo Come to redeem me?”(Ⅳ,ⅲ,15-58). David states that “Teens actually overestimate risk.” as well as “They take more risks not because they don't understand the dangers but because they weigh risk versus reward differently.”(Dobbs, 4). Their reward is living a happy life together and they attempt to make it true by doing anything they can. Same comments in this paragraph as above paragraph.
Derived from the potent lessons that one should learn throughout their childhood and adolescence from parental figures is the concept of a moral compass; when one lacks this sense of guidance it can dramatically affect their ability to form a sound sense of judgment which could expose them to unfavourable consequences. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the theme that when young people face a lack of parental guidance the effects can be detrimental to their futures is demonstrated comprehensively. Before being introduced to the contents of the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, understanding of the argument Shakespeare was attempting to convey, is that adolescents are impulsive and cannot make decisions themselves; and if they did, they would be subject to consequences that could ultimately cost them their lives. However, after reading Juliet’s parts, I was able to see that Shakespeare wasn’t arguing such at all. Instead I saw that Shakespeare was asking a question of who is mature, as opposed to stating that children are immature. Throughout all of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo is unarguably the most reckless character in the play. Despite several warnings being impulsive by Friar Lawrence and other characters, Romeo fails to be mindful of their advice. While it can be observed that Romeo has good intentions, he makes poor and rash decisions that lead to unfortunate circumstances for his friends and everyone around him. His regardless nature is the catalyst for nearly every tragic event that occurs, and ultimately, the deaths of himself and Juliet.
Throughout Romeo and Juliet, Romeo exhibits behaviour that could be interpreted as impulsive. He easily and shamelessly dates women, mourning when he is rejected. His unrequited love with Rosaline sends Romeo into a depression, only to be lifted by Juliet, whom he falls in love with instantaneously. This causes skepticism of Romeo’s love, and he is even questioned by Friar Lawrence, who claims that love is not as lenient as to allow Romeo to use women so frequently. Furthermore, Romeo is not in love with Juliet, but rather in lust, and his infatuation with her will ebb away, despite expressing his fondness of Juliet, and even promising to marry her, because his reason for being with her relies on Juliet’s appearance, her lack of experience, and his avidity to have a significant other.

In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet’s sometimes irrational behavior can be explained by their teenage brains. Many irresponsible decisions and actions could have been prevented if they had mature brains. Their irresponsible behavior can be explained by these two reasons: they value the rewards more than they consider the risk, and their brains don't have as much experience in decision making as a mature one would.
Great post as always. I would have to say that I agree with you regarding the immaturity and impulsiveness about Romeo and Juliet’s tale. We all can look back in our teenage years and realized that life is learning experience. There is no way; anyone would be able to convince me otherwise that Romeo and Juliet experience true love. As we are in agreement that they did not have the life experience to understand true love. I would go as far as saying that the notion of them taking their life were not a desire but merely stupidity and impulsiveness on their part.
These are some of the same things that teens today do, they talk themselves out of a tough situation by misleading the person they're talking to into believing something that isn’t true. The way teens talk to their parents, Juliet and Romeo talk to their parents the same way because there can be many interpretations of what is being said. Some of the decisions they make are some of the same mistakes teens make not thinking things through all the way. When Tybalt killed Mercutio Romeo ran after seeking revenge he wasn’t thinking about the consequences of the action he was committing. Romeo ended up killing Tybalt, and then he was banished after that.
In the article The Teenage Brain people talk about how the brain is not fully developed. “This physical difference in adolescent brain activity “shows that adolescence is a unique phase in development.” ” The reason is that the brain is not fully developed because it is still growing at this time. So sometimes teens make little but stupid decisions. This goes into the next part Romeo and Juliet.
