Harvir Singh Mr. Nordlund Honors English I May 21, 2015 Hungrier than Hungry “Hunger kills more people every year than AIDS, Malaria, and tuberculosis combined.”(World Food Program). Of the places in which Hunger is a serious problem one place is in Sub-Saharan Africa and Zimbabwe. The cause of this hunger, to realize and study the victim’s and their struggle for food, and looking to see what is being done are all things to look into and see how people’s lives are impacted are all things to look at. There are many causes that lead to the problem of hunger in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Zimbabwe. These causes are mostly economical and agricultural as well as multiple other factors playing into hunger. The economical and hunger causes of hunger include drought, rising food prices, and also unemployment. Sub-Saharan Africa is experiencing lots of drought which is limiting their food supply. “Today an estimated 14 million people are in danger of starving in Ethiopia alone, and a million more are threatened in drought-ridden Eritrea.”(Masci). Drought is leading to less production of crops, based on supply and demand, less supply is causing prices to rise for food and leading poverty scorched people to be in state of hunger. Also unemployment is playing a big role in people not being able to afford food. People in Sub-Saharan Africa are mostly unemployed so without any income, they cannot afford the amount of food they need. Many of the causes of hunger are as a result of a
The food security in Haiti is another issue that must be described to understand it better. Via USAID the number of people living in extreme poverty is about 2.5 million Haitians, most of their income being forced to be spent on subsistence farming (Agriculture and Food Security). The need for more accessible and better food is very evident with statistics like 53.4% of the population is undernourished, 21.9% of the under 5 population has experienced stunting because of the lack of nutritional intake. The problem is not getting any better in 2000 the population that was undernourished was 55.2% to today where it is at 53.4% (Global Hunger Index). The evidence for food security being a problem is overwhelming and where most of our attention will be spent. The solution for this issue is heavily involved but our organization will address this issue through many different avenues. The center called “Training for Food” will provide a service that rewards Haitians for coming to workshops about how to farm effectively with
(2016, December 18). “African children still going hungry” author Larson states that it doesn't take much to cause world hunger and all it takes is a drought and a failed harvest. While this is true and educational it is a biased opinion and lacks statistical support. This article connects to the reader on an emotional level but it lacks information and facts. Larson provides real life examples of world hunger. 2 year old Aliou is just one of those in this article that is affected by world hunger. According to Larson, K. (2016, December 18). “African children still going hungry” “Aliou Seyni Diallo collapses to his knees in tears and plops his forehead down on the dirt outside his family's hut.Soon he is wailing inconsolably and writhing on his back in the sand. A neighbour spots him, picks him up easily by one arm, and gives him a little uncooked millet in a metal bowl. The toddler shovels it into his mouth with sticky fingers coated in tears and grime. The crying stops, for the moment.” (para 1). Larson uses Aliou’s story to touch the audience's heart. While this article can really touch the reader it lacks supporting information and facts. A lack of statistics can be uninteresting to the
Have you ever thought about what it is like to be constantly hungry as a result of not having access to adequate food? For some people in the world this is a reality. In my interview with Melinda Vonderhorst she recounts her personal observations from her five trips to Haiti, where she helped to build a school along with working in an orphanage and clinic, of countless children
“Over 100,000 children under five suffer from acute malnutrition while one child out of three is stunted, or irreversibly short for their age.”(“Hunger”) This staggering statistic is due to one of the world’s biggest problems, hunger. Hunger is a problem that many developing countries face, one of the biggest victims to hunger is the small Caribbean country of Haiti. Hunger in Haiti affects the entire country, from the rural countrysides to the major cities. Though hunger is already a big issue for Haiti, it has gotten worse in the past decade due to the extreme poverty, heavy storms, and natural disasters that the country has faced. “In 1997 some 1.2 million Haitians didn 't have enough food to eat. A decade later the number had more than doubled. Today, that figure is 6.7 million, that goes without food some days, can 't afford a balanced diet or has limited access to food.”(“Goldberg”) Natural disasters and extreme poverty have played large roles in Haiti’s growing hunger problem.
Malawi is a small, land locked country in southern Africa, that has population of 12 million people (Menon, 2007). 65 percent are below the poverty line and 28 percent live in extreme poverty, It is known as one of the poorest country in Africa (Menon, 2007) Reports had shown that, instance of food insecurity has been happening for some time, however little attention was payed (Menon, 2007). In 2002, 500-1000 people died from hunger or hunger related diseases (Menon, 2007). The latest figures showed a huge leap in the number of people in need of food aid, over 8 million based in an article release on May 27, 2016, (Masina, 2016). In April of the same year the government stated that 2.8 million people were in need, a
“ Africa has been suffering food crisis for years and years. Throughout all the recurring droughts that just come naturally, it is very difficult for Africans to grow food. In America alone we have given Africa billions and billions of dollars for food aid. Everyone is wondering “Why are Africans are still starving, and asking for more money?”.(Famine in Africa) Many of the places in Africa are caught up in food insecurity.Food insecurity is the main reason for starvation in Africa.Without having the nutrition of food it will cause Africans to be ill. Being ill causes Africans to not have energy and without energy it is difficult to go out and plant and raise crops. “From illness in Africa alone 12 Africans
These climate conditions affect farming and agriculture to the point that the population of this nation is starving. Disease is another factor that contributes to malnutrition in Ethiopia. Many people suffer from various diseases, resulting in deaths. When a member of a family dies, especially if this person is the breadwinner of the family, it leads to a lack of resources to purchase food. Another contributing factor to the hunger in Ethiopia is the lack of education.. Without an education, individuals are not able to be educated about farming techniques, and fertilizers so that they can grow their own crops and grow food for themselves as well as enter the workforce. Ultimately, without the adequate knowledge, resources, climate, or health, hunger prevails in nations like
To help combat this issue there are a few things that could be done to fight hunger in Ethiopia. Through programs being implemented water could be brought in and the soil could be told so that it could finally be able to be farmed. With proper irrigation systems and training programs implemented Ethiopians could be trained how

As the world’s population grow, the number of hungry people also increases at a disproportionate rate. As for some part of the world, people could go days, even weeks with no food because they don’t have the access to food. However, a person can survive for so long without proper nutrition. The lack of access to food has remained a serious problem in many developing countries, such as Kenya, Cambodia, and Uganda. Even though the United States is consider one of the most prosperous country in the world, we still have starvation and hunger. Food is such an essential part of everyone’s lives, that is why over the last few years, there have been a lot of movements and campaigns that suggested having access to food to be considered as the basic human right, especially the Food Justice movement. What this means is that one should be able to obtain food freely without worrying about his financial situation. At the end of the day, the goal of the food justice movement is to allow people to have access to food, regardless one’s economic constraints or social inequalities. In addition, the food justice movement also ensures and protect the rights of workers on farms as well as challenges farming practices that endanger our
Other causes of hunger are poor leadership, over-fishing, poor farming methods, natural calamities such as drought, famine and floods. There are others such over exportation of agricultural goods, land rights and ownership, diversion of land use to non-productive activities.

World food agency FAO in 2008 revealed the data 's information about Hunger Map that was shocking; namely: (1) more than 800 million people sleep in hunger; (2) every 5 seconds a child dies from hunger; (3) people die of starvation due to poor nutrition due to disease more than AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; (4) a lot of people sick due to malnutrition (World Food Programme, 2009).
