Atticus Finch is the Father figure to the main character Scout Finch and her brother Jem in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Atticus may not be liked by some of the characters in the book but the way he treats people makes him a likeable character in real life. In this novel Atticus and his family live in Maycomb Alabama. Atticus’ wife died when his children were little and he is left with the task of raising Jem and Scout by himself. Atticus is a lawyer who sticks up for what he believes is right. An example of this is when he makes the decision to defend Tom Robinson, an African American male against false rape charges. Atticus is a likeable character in life because he is wise, open minded and kind. To begin with wisdom is a strong example of what makes Atticus a likeable character. Atticus’ wisdom is evident when he is giving advice to his kids or having conversations. An example of this is when Atticus explains to Scout what “nigger-lover” means saying “nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don’t mean anything like snot-nose.”(Lee 108) Atticus and his family are constantly bombarded by members of the community for him taking on the case to defend a black person from accusations against rape. These accusations against rape. However these allegations don’t seem to bother him because in his heart he knows what he's doing is right. He also treats Calpurnia, the maid who works at his home, the same as he would treat anybody else. He even accepts and allows Calpurnia to correct his children's behaviour. One of the many things Atticus is passionate about is to teach his children that everyone is equal and not to judge others “until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” Much of Maycomb believe that Atticus is wrong by taking the case of Tom Robinson and thinks he is an inadequate parent. Atticus Finch grew up on Finch’s landing, but traveled to Montgomery to study law. After he finished his studies, he meets a woman fifteen years younger than him and married her, soon after they had two kids, Jeremy and Jean Louis Finch. Jeremy goes by Jem and Jean goes by Scout. The young mother passed away about two years after having Jean from a sudden heart attack, leaving Atticus to raise their two kids alone. All of these characteristics are shown in a variety of ways.
Atticus first shows his heroism when he shot the mad dog and possibly saving people on Maycomb from harm. Also he never told his kids of his shooting ability. This shows off a more humble side of Atticus. This is again demonstrated in the court case, where Atticus was being respectful to the ly while defending Tom.

As a single dad, he is far from perfect and makes many mistakes when raising his children but Atticus is a voice of ethical courage in the novel. He always stands up for what is right even if it means facing the worst. In contrast to the town, he supports racial equality and has been appointed as Tom Robinson's defense attorney in his trial. He is determined to do a good job at it even though he knows he is going to lose because of the racism since everybody in the town is racist from one degree to other. My opinion of Atticus is that he is a very good and caring father. He isn’t like most of the people in Maycomb. He doesn’t discriminate towards the african americans and he thinks that they should be treated the same as whites. Atticus is trying to teach his kids the same which I feel is good because if he doesn’t teach them then they will take after the people of Maycomb and become racist individuals. Calpurnia, who is the maid of the Finches house and also acts as a mother towards the kids. She is african american, but she is treated very fairly and is paid. It’s almost as if she’s a part of the family.

Atticus lives with his son Jem and his daughter Scout in the the small town of Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus raises his children by himself, with the help of some kind neighbors and a housekeeper named Calpurnia. Scout and Jem understand the complexities and differences amongst their neighborhood and town. Unlike most of the citizens in Maycomb, Atticus is different. Although he wasn't seen as a hero during the time the novel took place, his actions are of true heroism. These characteristics make Atticus a very outstanding character do to the fact that he is so kind hearted towards everyone. In chapter 11, Atticus proves the trait of kindness to be true. As he is walking by Mrs. Dubose, she is being very mean to him, yet Atticus continues to call her very nice names and tell her how good her gardening looked. Atticus knows when to be formal or spirited towards specific people in his life. He is generally respectful to his neighbors, but when they treat him badly, he is not as respectful. When Mr. Cunningham goes to the jail while Atticus is at the doorway of the jail, Atticus shows his tough and smart side by having someone watch over their conversation. He was secretive and used a quality of voice that expressed hatred towards Mr. Cunningham and the collection of people that followed with him.
