High upon a lonely hill surrounded by a great dark forest, stood an ancient, crumbling manor, known as the Haunted House. The windows were all smashed and it looked like the house was used a long time ago and was never used again. The font gates were as old as the hills. It belonged to a greedy old man, he was as short as a stump, he was really grumpy and fat who everyone said he was a wizard. Even though he owned the immense haunted house he didn’t dare to go inside because he was frightened like a child in dark, so he lived in the small cottage in the grounds of the manor, with just his black cat for company. He was as lonely as the master who has go to war, but hews happy, because he had a true love. His true love was gold, and he had …show more content…
This fellow looked fellow looked a bit to fearless for the wizard’s liking. That night, Titan stepped through the rusty gates, as he did the surroundings seemed to change. The air became misty all of a sudden. The weather became cold and when he looked towards the trees, it looked as if they were alive. He turned his concentration away from the trees, which did not freak him at all, and continued his journey up the hill towards the house. Without hesitating, he unlocked the door and went in, as he went in the silent still sinister house, the door slammed shut behind him slowly the gloomy light started fading. A butler appeared from nowhere, he was holding his head under his arms like a ball in his hands. “Jeeves at your service, sir,” he said, creepily. “Follow me.” “Thank you, my good man,” said Titan excitingly, handing him his coat and following him up the creaking staircase without blinking an eye. Ancient portraits followed him with their eyes like human eyes. Titan winked at them as he passed expressing his bravery. An empty suit of armour waved at him. Titan waved back. “Good evening,” he said. Jeeves led him on down a murky passage. A heavy door creaked open and they entered a dark bedroom, with a tattered four poster bed. Cobwebs hung from the ceiling and a thick layer of dust covered the furniture. Titan opened the wardrobe and a skeleton came
“Good father! Are you hurt? Come with me to the House of Maivifolia. She is the most gracious host and will host you at her house,” he shouted. He sprinted, eager to aid the weary old man I must have seemed. He was tanned, but had the build of a scholar, not a warrior and his straw curls lay askew on his wise head. His eyes, blanketed in deep creases, still shone bright with their thoughts and
The Haunting of Hill House is a novel containing many characters who possess childlike qualities. Eleanor, the main character, had her childhood stolen and therefore acts the most childlike. Eleanor’s job was to care for her ill mother, which resulted in her missing out on vital socialization along with her chance to enjoy her young life. The references to the characters and their childish behavior begins fairly early in the novel. There have been suspicions of a house being haunted, named Hill House, so a Doctor named Dr. Montague decides to look for participants to occupy the house for the summer. When the characters arrive at Hill House in order to participate in the experiment, Eleanor and another important character named Theodora immediately connect. The two girls
The passage became ever more sloping as he advanced. His body was inclined at a sickening angle. Strange streaks of blackness seemed to cross his vision, as he half fell, half slid the few feet which yet remained to be traversed. Orloff’s head crashed into something hard, which half stunned him. A moment later he opened his eyes, and saw before him a heavily barred iron grating, and – a skeleton.
The Haunting of Hill House is considered a classic to many people. It has a certain sense of feeling missing from today's novels. The Haunting of Hill House has suspense, horror, a little bit of romance, and an ending that will leave you thinking for days. Shirley Jackson is well known for her twisted work. At the beginning of the book, you our introduced to a character that has a major impact on all of its "guests". Hill House. "Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against the hills, holding darkness within." This is just one of the chilling sentences from the opening paragraph. The fear begins to set in. Shortly after, you are introduced to the strong yet cautious Dr. John
I peered around through the rain, desperately searching for some shelter, I was drowning out here. The trouble was, I wasn’t in the best part of town, and in fact it was more than a little dodgy. I know this is my home turf but even I had to be careful. At least I seemed to be the only one out here on such an awful night. The rain was so powerfully loud I couldn’t hear should anyone try and creep up on me. I also couldn’t see very far with the rain so heavy and of course there were no street lights, they’d been broken long ago. The one place I knew I could safely enter was the church, so I dashed.

Dr. Gabor Mate, a Hungarian born Canadian physician, who is also a neurologist, psychiatrist, and psychologist, but who specializes in the study and treatment of addiction, reveals revolutionary evidence pertaining to addiction. In Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, Dr. Mate worked with patients suffering chronic drug addiction for 12 years. With 20 years of experience as a family practitioner, Dr. Mate is a renowned speaker and teacher throughout North America; sharing his extensive knowledge with diverse audiences including health care professionals and educators (Mate, About Dr. Mate, 2016). The Realm of Hungry Ghosts, Dr. Mate’s most recent best-selling book, illuminates the origins and causes of addiction. As Co-founder of Compassion for Addiction (a non-profit organization), Dr. Gabor Mate encourages a greater understanding; “addiction is the attempt of affected human beings to escape a profound discomfort with themselves and their world” (Mate, Compassion4Addiction, 2015). Drawing on cutting-edge science, Dr. Mate presents the world with a shocking discovery: “The source of addiction is not to be found in genes, but in the early childhood environment.” Therefore, Dr. Mate simply “calls for a more compassionate approach toward the addict.” (Mate, 2016) As cutting-edge science concludes addiction to be a mental health issue, rather than criminal behavior, the American legal system demonstrates a devastating disservice to its own society.
The mouldy, rotting, brown house stood in front of Emily, only fear keeping her feet planted to the ground. Moaning and creaking noises being projected from the house. The grass was damp from the evening fog and every time she took a step the mud squelched. The bottom step squeaked as she applied pressure with her foot, she let out a sigh of relief as the old structure hadn’t swallowed her up. The door, slightly off colour from the rest of the house, loomed over her like a giant as he reached for the brass door handle. A shiver ran through her body like an electric current, the musty smell of a house that had been long abandoned filled Emily’s nose. It was dim and uninviting. The furniture dusty and old, looking as if it would crumble to dust if she was to touch it. Mould ate away at
Undaunted Courage is a sweeping novel by Stephen E. Ambrose, detailing the grueling journey of Lewis and Clark. Following the adventure of the Corps of Discovery, Ambrose describes the expedition exploring the vast wilderness of the western portion of the United States. Complete with excerpts from the personal diaries of the men themselves, the book gives an insight to readers as to how challenging the mission really was. The expedition faced countless dangers, including risky encounters with Native Americans, extreme weather, disease, depression, and the battle to keep their own sanity. Through their brilliant leadership skills, Lewis and Clark were able to lead their expedition 3,700 miles from
I took a deep breath as I walked through the doorway. The door was stuck open, hanging on just one of its hinges. It was clear that no one had been near this place in a long time. As I entered, a stench hit me. It smelt sickly sweet, almost like rotten fairy floss. I looked around the room at the faded and ripped wallpaper, and the broken furniture. The air was so thick with dust it was almost impossible to breathe, and everything was thickly covered with dust. The little light there was came from the cracks in the yellowed blinds.
Children can be an unseen ghost as they walk silently in the footsteps of their dying parent. Having a serious illness in the family creates its own kind of culture; the culture of the “sick family”, where an illness takes the lead as the most important player in the family. Children who are used to being the first consideration in most homes suddenly take a far second to dealing with the illness. They are often left out of important discussions and shielded from seeing the sick or dying parent and many of their basic needs are left poorly met. In the emotional chaos of critical illness children are often believed to be unaware of what is actually happening, and are forced to either find emotional support from someone outside the family or hurt alone. Julie Orringer in her short story titled
Ghosts, as with any other misunderstood group or people, have been preyed upon by others without understanding. The lack of knowledge about ghosts and haunting activity has led people astray as to what they really are. What Hollywood and television portrays is very inaccurate and cannot be relied upon as truthful. They show these spirits of the dead as being evil in nature, filled with malice and harmful intent. But that this is not the case. The field of paranormal activity is amazing. It has caught the imagination of people from every walk of life. It has always interested me and has influenced me to pick this as the topic for my research. Through this research I wish to uncover the truth about the existence of ghosts.
I looked up at the black sky. I hadn't intended to be out this late. The sun had set, and the empty road ahead had no streetlights. I knew I was in for a dark journey home. I had decided that by traveling through the forest would be the quickest way home. Minutes passed, yet it seemed like hours and days. The farther I traveled into the forest, the darker it seemed to get. I was very had to even take a breath due to the stifling air. The only sound familiar to me was the quickening beat of my own heart, which felt as though it was about to come through my chest. I began to whistled to take my mind off the eerie noises I was hearing. In this kind of darkness I was in, it was hard for me to believe that I could be
“Oren Peli once said, ‘The thing I find really scary about ghosts and demons is tat ylu don’t really know what they are or where they are. They’re not very well understood. You don’t know what they want from you. So it’s the kind of thing you don’t even know how to defend yourself against. Anything that’s unknown and mysterious is very scary.’” Controversial topics range from global tragedies to the newest video game. One that has lived for centuries, is whether or not the supernatural and paranormal exist. Like every discussion, there are believers, and there are skeptics. Scientists tend to be the skeptics, while those with an adventurous mind tend to be those who believe that some other-world being exist. Scientists use experimentation to give explanations as to why someone would have a paranormal experience, and most have been successful in what they were proving, but those who are believers also give excellent points to why their experiences have no scientific proof with them making it hard to choose a side. Since the dawn of time, there were ghosts, and every person has their own belief, but many might not know for sure because of the variety of explanations.
There 's that look people get told they have, where they look like they 've seen a ghost. I want to know what it means to have that feeling but knowing you 're the ghost. It had been too long since I stepped foot anywhere near these parts of the city. After I turned and changed into who I am now, I never wanted to risk getting seen by any members of the family that runs this part. That is actually a good reason they have never been able to extend their territory any further. It 's kind of easy to hear when a gang war is about to break out for someone to gain new ground. And for me, it 's all too easy to join the defending family and help kill men you were once friends with to make sure you had the room to run fucking wild. I 'm made a few good friends, nah I made a few bad acquaintances by doing that. The men that run other parts of this city know me by who I am now, only one knows me by who I was. Maybe it 's for the best he knows Big Mac is against him, less likely that it 's me behind the mask then. God, in those days, before I grew up and found out doing everything I was getting told to do, without being told to do them was so much better, Claire not counting, she just above another voice in my head. But the freedom I have, may not seem like a good thing for the city and its people, but I love being me and only this me.
