Othello is a play written by William Shakespeare. In which Othello, the protagonist, is overcome by feelings of jealousy which is a common theme throughout the play. Jealousy can be very healthy. However, if out of control, it can lead to violence. It can take control of the mind. In some cases, it can even lead to terrible illness and death, much like it did with Othello who committed suicide. Jealousy is a completely necessary human emotion and a common passion. It exhibits many forms but it is not simply defined. Untamed jealousy can turn dangerous. Jealousy is completely normal while in control Jealousy is a “base” passion (III, iii, 366) that often exists between the couple and the so called rival (Todd, Dewhurst, 1). It is a natural part of human nature that stems from the evolutionary past of humans (Buss, 1) Psychologists deduct that jealousy is distinct from a conscious experience. It is mainly affected by how the situation is viewed (Salovey, 1), it is a subconscious feeling that is completely natural. Any human in normal mental condition is susceptible to jealousy. It is, in simple terms, an anxious insecurity (Buss, 1). Jealousy is the need to be needed (Tov, Ruach, 1980) and includes fear of loss, anger over betrayal and insecurity (Adams, Davies, 1985). These are all defining aspects of our nature. They are what set us apart and make us …show more content…
Iago is perhaps one of the most notorious villains in the entire shakespearean canon. This evil mastermind uses the possessive properties of the human psyche to bring ruin upon the lives of the protagonist Othello and his lovely wife, the fair Desdemona. He accomplished this feat through his insight on the destructive powers of jealousy, which he put to use in making Othello a pawn in his plan. Iago managed to gradually make Othello suspect that his innocent wife Desdemona was cheating on him with lieutenant Cassio who, in Othello’s mind, had taken the shape of the rival. Iago did this by showing Othello that Cassio was in possession of Desdemona’s handkerchief, a gift which Othello had given to Desdemona on the night they fell in love, when Othello asked for ocular proof (III, iii, 360) of the affair. All while have stolen the handkerchief and hidden it in Cassio’s possession himself. But this process awakened the dangerous form of jealousy in the heart and soul of
In everyday life jealousy occurs over an outfit, how you look, or a skill someone is really good at, and for some people jealousy will make them do negative things--things they would otherwise not do. In Ray Bradbury’s, Kij Johnson’s, and Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.’s short stories they all represent jealousy throughout their stories. In “All Summer In a Day”, the children are jealous over Margot seeing and remembering the sun, were as they can’t remember. In “Ponies”, it talks about how Barbara is jealous of TheOtherGirls, and will do anything to fit in with them. In “Harrison Bergeron”, the society is based over the past years of people being “not equal”, so the Handicapper General made everyone equal so there would not be many outburst, but Harrison decides to rebel. In “All Summer In a Day”, “Ponies”, and “Harrison Bergeron” we learn that jealousy can make people act differently-- they could even go as far
SEX DIFFERENCES IN JEALOUSY: EVOLTION, PHYSIOLOGY, AND PSYCHOLOGY (Buss et al, 1992, as cited in Funder & Ozer, 1997)
The common belief, concerning jealousy, is that we cannot control a lot of it. ‘It is a natural, instinctive emotion that everyone experiences at one point or
It's a common understanding that jealousy is a sign of love. It’s that knot in your stomach, that mix of anxiety, terror that materializes when you feel threaten by someone else. A new study at the University of Haifa has found that the hormone oxytocin, also known as the "love hormone," which affects behaviors such as trust, empathy, also affects opposite behaviors, such as jealousy. The hormone is released in the body naturally during childbirth and when engaging in sexual relations. Your probably familiar with this feeling it's what Shakespeare called the green-eyed monster. Jealousy is a characteristic humans even animals take part in, some reacting more than others. Unlike many emotions, we can choose to not experience jealousy, a lot
“Jealousy is an emotion tinged with feelings like anger, insecurity, fear, and resentment.” (ppedia). Jealousy isn 't something we can control most of the time. It is a natural, built-in emotion that we all experience at some point. Most of the time jealousy comes from self-pity and insecurity. “Hands down, insecurity is the most common source of jealousy” writes Dr. Seth Meyers in Psychology Today. Curbing our jealousy can be difficult, but it is necessary if we want to move forward and have healthy relationships. Uncontrolled jealousy often causes people to do things they wouldn’t normally do. Small, self-perceived insults add fuel to flame our already heightened emotions. This uncontrolled emotion can lead to
Jealousy is an complex emotion of mixtures which makes a person happy or sad. It is a way in which a person expresses himself or herself. It is basically a feeling ranging from fear of abandonment to rage and humiliation. It is such a thing that can cause any perfect rational people to suddenly turn into raging creatures of angers and hatefulness. It is not a positive sign for a relationship. Morbid jealousy (also known as Othello syndrome or delusional jealousy) is an example of the suspicious version of this disorder about the person is preoccupied being unfaithful without even having any real proof. Jealousy, known as complex emotion, can take place between two individuals and can even take place in the animal kingdom. Jealousy can take place in a variety of forms such as ones of romantic, work, family, friendship, along with other abnormal relationships. While many Psychiatrists see this as the brain's natural defense system, it can cause as much harm as it could help an individual’s relationship. Each person may have a higher chance of becoming jealous, but there are still many ways to help prevent these issues.
Constantly, jealousy affects all races, genders, and ages over a perceived threat of humiliation within or outside of relationships. Jealousy has a positive and negative connotation based on the extremity of the situation and point of view. Psychologists often categorize a minute dose of jealousy to be natural; however, they conclude it becomes unhealthy after the jealousy withdraws from one’s mental stability. Extracting personal time and connections, “[jealousy] is costly to one’s self and damaging to one's relationship” between the other individual and third party involved (Verdolin). Due to one of the three individuals categorized as selfish, radical jealousy is considered as an evil act once it begins to hurt relationships. Consequently,
while in contrast male jealousy is connected with loss of possible time, effort, and resources for
Throughout my chosen texts, there are many different causes of jealousy which affect characters in different ways. Sexual jealousy is the most prevalent type as it affects numerous characters across the texts. The way in which it is presented is by the gradual progression with the breakdown of the character. In Othello the eponymous character is convinced that his
Jealousy doesn't get us what we need, yet it makes us hopeless, we should comprehend the self-vanquishing nature of jealousy.
Jealousy can lead a person to do some terrible things to get what they want. People could go to the extremes of killing someone just so they have what the other person has.For example, in the tragedy, Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, Macbeth is envy of the king. He wants to be the king and does in everything in his power to be one. Macbeth goes to the far extreme of killing the king just so that he can be crowned the next king. People will do anything to get what they want and will lead to huge tensions between those that they
Domestic violence is often triggered by sexual jealousy and accusations . People don’t normally experience jealousy unless they feel threatened by another person or entity. When offenders sense attention and/or attraction from a third party, they feel this uneasiness that we call jealousy. In romantic relationships, jealousy is typically triggered by a third party. They do not have to actually pose a threat; the mere perception of a threat is enough to get the wheels of jealousy turning. Just like every other emotion and relationship problem , a adult whose parents modeled jealousy may tend more toward jealousy only because that's all they know and see as a child growing up. Certain traits such as anxiety can also affect jealousy. Some individuals who tend to worry are more likely to worry about losing a loved one or their relationship with that individual .
Jealousy refers to a feeling of insecurity, negative thoughts, anxiety, and fear. Jealousy is a horrible thing. If only humans would not be jealous, then the world would be a better place. Jealousy builds up inside and one day it will all explode out of us causing us to hurt those we love. There are many situations that can make you jealous, however the intensity varies. Many people experience jealousy every day, but very few stop to analyze their jealousy. This is why jealousy starts out as a small nagging feeling, but just keeps growing if we do not think about it. William exhibits a great deal of jealousy when Margot presents her representation
When we are jealous we worry that our partner might find someone else more appealing and we fear that he or she will reject us. Since we feel threatened that our partner might find someone more attractive, we may activate jealousy as a way to cope with this threat. Similar to other forms of worry, jealousy leads us to focus only on the negative. We interpret our partner’s behaviour as reflecting a loss of interest in us or a growing interest in someone else. It results into insecurities and misunderstandings and ultimately we don’t trust our partners which causes the separation. The only reason for this is that we consider other people more cool and attractive than ourselves and we are not confident enough that our partner deserves us or not. And when we start hating some people just because they a good in some other thing or has anything better than us. We automatically think that our partner does not want to stay with us. And this is the reason why we start hating any small comment from our partner and start to think that he or she is searching for flaws in him. Jealous to an extent is good as it creates the feeling of love and to keep our partner with ourselves one would do more efforts too but everything outside the limits is unbearable and hence it makes a full stop to the existing love and
