Experience Essay: An Experience That Changed My Life

I notice so many different cultures and ethnicity, which amazed me because in my country you only saw Dominicans and maybe sometimes if you could afford to go to a resort you could, see Caucasians, but that was not very diverse like the united states I was excited in exploring this country, but I the same time I was very scared because it was a big change and the language was different. Now I had to adapt to a new culture, new people and new friends. Everything to me felt like a challenge.

After reviewing my life, I have decided my life defining moment was when my family and I moved to Texas from Oklahoma. I consider this move my life changing moment because it changed so many things in my life. This move set the stage for an entirely new life for me. Moving six hours away from the only home I knew certainly called for many changes.

I am Indian. My entire family is Indian. I am the very first child to have been born outside of India. My parents’ generation were the first to marry into non-Indian families. So America is pretty new for us. However, there isn’t really anything special about us coming to this country. My aunt came for school. My father came for school. My mother came because of my father. They all came by plane comfortably, and never experienced an adventure while coming into the US. It was the most boring travel story EVER.

America has been referred to as a "melting pot," welcoming people from many different countries, races, and religions, all hoping to find new opportunities, freedom, and a better way of life. From the start, America has obtained freedom, justice and equality for every american that has sought out for it. People all around the world move to America because of it’s diversity, people feel welcome coming from all around the globe. America is definitely known as the land of opportunity because of helpful economy , also it lets people leave the problems of their country to find sanctuary in America and lastly because everyone in America has a chance of achieving the american dream.

There are many events that stand out in my life that were significant and helped me grow stronger. One of these events stands out in particular to me and had the greatest impact in my life. When I attended high school my focus was never on the academics but only on sports and having fun with my friends. I never payed attention for more than five seconds and failed to complete any type of work given to me. My lack of care for high school affected me on going to a four year college, playing a sport in college, and taking remedial classes.

Life changing events can sometimes be difficult. I went to camp for the first time last summer to get away from the pressures of home and school. Camp was a month long, I have never been away from my parents more than a week. I was very anxious. I had no idea what situations to expect and how I would handle them. I started to really wonder about my life. The way it was going was not the best for me. I can “run away” from my reality, but I know that I was going to have to come back to it in a month. The way I treat people was total opposite from how I treated my parents. There have been very few events throughout my lifetime that I feel have impacted or inspired me with such noteworthiness and that I know will change my outlook on the world and affect me forever. One of those events occurred when I traveled to Portugal, my parent’s homeland. From this excursion in 2007, I learned the importance of family, most importantly the distant kind. It provided me with a totally different perspective on the world and how large and extended one’s family can really be; even across cultures and continents. My life has been a crazy roller coaster with many events that have affected my life all in different ways. There have been times where my life has been at its highest peak in the world then it falls down, right into a deep valley. From the time my lovable younger sister came into my life to when my grandpa had a near death experience, I have learned many valuable lessons through the rough times as well as the more happy times. When I was a young girl, my mom had always told me the same thing over and over again. I never really thought about how a few words would have a deep effect on me in a short amount of time.

In life we all have something that has changed the way we perceive things. Most things that change a person’s perception happens to be an experience that they have gone thru and learned from. In my case it wasn’t necessarily an experience, it was a dog that changed my perception on life. My mind and heart was opened in a whole new way. I never thought I could love an animal just as much as I loved the people in my life. I always thought it was strange that pet owners loved and treated their pets the same way they treated their children. My perception on dogs or pets in general definitely changed. Throughout this paper you will see why I am a totally different person because of a dog that entered my life.

I remember it like it was yesterday, the day that changed my life forever. On March 9th of 2011, my mom was diagnosed with skin cancer in her lung. The doctor gave her about six months to live and this is how it went.

The end of school came eventually, and I abandoned dreams of the sixth grade. Luckily, I was transferring to another elementary school, but this offered me little consolation. Only dummies have to repeat a grade.

Throughout life I have had many memorable events. The memorable times in my life vary from being the worst times in my life and some being the best, either way they have become milestones that will be remembered forever. The best day of my life was definitely the day that I received my drivers' license. This day is one of the most memorable because of the feelings I had when I received it, the opportunities that were opened up for me and the long lasting benefits that I received from it that still exist today.
